A rookie's hard lesson
Out-of-shape Meachem sits out practice with injury
Posted: Sunday June 3, 2007 9:52PM; Updated: Sunday June 3, 2007 9:52PM

METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- Saints first-round draft choice Robert Meachem sat out the final practice of minicamp on Sunday afternoon with a white bandage wrapped around the lower part of his right leg.

He did not speak to reporters coming off the field, nor did head coach Sean Payton. Team spokesman Greg Bensel said Payton would discuss the matter later, possibly on Monday.

Meachem, selected 27th overall in this year's draft out of Tennessee, also missed part of minicamp with a sprained left ankle and was criticized at that time by Payton for being out of shape.

Meachem has since lost weight and was able to participate in four of the five minicamp practices.

Quarterback Drew Brees said Sunday that he does not yet think he's seen Meachem's full potential, but has high hopes for him.

"I like him," Brees said. "I think he's been real hampered by his ankle and that sort of thing, but I think he's got a lot of talent. I really like the way he catches the ball. He attacks it, and I think he's going to be a big run-after-catch kind of guy. He's going to be big and physical, kind of hard to bring down, kind of like a (Marques) Colston. So I think he'll add a nice dimension to our offense."

He'll flourish in that offense, the NFC will rue the day that the Texans passed on Reggie Bush. That offense is going to revolve around him explosiveness for years to come, and Brees' consistency accompanied by a big, physical, and very young receiving core are going to cause problems for any defense for years to come.

This is what happens sometimes when you bust your butt to get into "the league" and have a massive cathartic moment that lasts a few weeks where you neglect the gym and start playing video games and clubbing and lose alot of the athletic improvement.

Meachem should be healthy, but I think he shirked his workout stuff and was chilling too much. Or, he is just another injury-prone WR bust taken in the 1st... another WR, another reason not to draft a wideout so high.

My #1 pick? My top pick was Laron Landry, then Patrick Willis, then Meachem and right before the Draft I actually said we were going to take Spencer.

Yeah I'm guilty of wanting him also...I also believe that this doesn't doom his NFL career...in fact it may be just the medicine he needed. He was always able to skate by with his vast talent now if someone can teach him how to work the sky is the limit for the guy.

I also wanted him.

He'll be a good player down in NO. Him, Colston, and Henderson are all burners.

The record of guys who start out not in shape is not good.

I stand corrected.......

Maybe I remember you wanted Meachem for Dallas if we took at WR......

Just messing with you a little.......

OUT as Jim Rhome in the Jungle would say!

Well everyone knows how long I was on Spencer's bandwagon, no need to even debate that... I was sold on him for a long time.

I did want him. No doubt about it. But I only moved on to him after I was convinced there was no way Laron Landry was dropping and then Patrick Willis. The week before the draft in my final mock I had us trading down to grab Spencer because I got a tip. As far as I am concerned Spencer is my pick and I will have no divided loyalty or agenda to prop up Meachem should he succeed or make excuses for him if he doesn't. I'd have loved to have Meachem. I like his attitude and hands. I am more than satisfied with the kid we got and the draft we had.

Ditto. I liked Meachem and Bowe....

But with Glenn, Owens, and Crayton, we are set at WR for this upcoming season and Bowe/Meachem would have been the #4 WR this year most likely.

If we are going after a Super Bowl this year, we needed someone who could impact right away.

And we needed to help the pass rush.

We did both in drafting Spencer. That is going to pay dividends for us this year. And we needed a pass rush moreso than a developing WR.

Yes Hos, I remember you reported the tip on Spencer early.....good job as it blind sighted me.

I am very happy with our draft also. The OL depth we drafted actually excites me more then anything. Free is going to be a stud for us.

The #1 draft pick for next year is just what the doctor ordered.

We have to make that pick a FRANCHISE SOMETHING! :star:

I gotta agree with you there CC. When you have a shot at a blue chip, you have to hit on it.
