Hostile, what is it about Garrett that you are so high on him?

Seemed to me you were talking about the "crappola" that comes out of Phillips mouth, and how Garrett reacts to that - not how Garrett carries himself in front of the team. After all, that's what your words said.

Besides, ho does a quote from Garrett tell us how he carries himself in front of the team? You can quote anyone and think the words sound great, but that always tell how things actually are.

As for your film clip, that's a great example of one time on camera. I always get a kick out of people who presume to know everything based on somethig like this, when the reality is we don't know everything that is said or takes place.

I don't mean to be light on Wade because I have always felt he is probably too soft, but I don't like latching onto every tiny quote, sound bite, media snippet or whatever as having some significant meaning. All of that should be taken with a grain of salt.

I think you are right...and it seems that the players are taking Wade with the same grains of salt.

"Wheva...if I make a mistake, it's Wade's fault, not mine, homie"! - pick a cowboy player.

But you didn't give an example of Garrett in action or of how Garrett conducts himself before the team. You gave a quote, and your only comment following the quote was that if he truly believes what he said he must be frustrated by the "crappola" that comes out of Wade's mouth.

In fact, you used those words - "if he (Garrett) truly believes what he said ....". Hell, you even left open the question of whether the quote told the true story, and now you are claiming it wasn't just a quote, but an example of Garrett "in action" and of how he conducts himself before the team?

Dude, do you have a screw lose??

I posted the video of Garrett speaking, that's the example of Garrett in action, did you not watch the video of him speaking before the team?.

I decided to make an extra comment completely unrelated to the original intent of posting the video. It is possible to discuss more than one concept in a post, but apparently that is mind blowing to you.

I've made it perfectly clear what my point in posting the video of Garrett was, I know my intent and I have since clarified that intent but you apparently don't want to accept my clarification, so move along and get over it.

Does anyone want to discuss anything about Garrett based on what they saw in the video I posted?

Please ignore my comment about Wade (mods please delete the comments I made about Wade if you can so this doesn't sidetrack this thread any further)

I am poaching this from another thread so I don't have to type it out. If you want something clarified, ask.

Long before Jason Garrett was a QB Coach in Miami I wanted him to be the Head Coach here one day. I have seen nothing that would change my mind on that at all. In fact, the things I have seen and heard make me want that even more.

I have not chirped about pedigree for a long time, but don't ever doubt that I still believe in it as it pertains to sports. I also have a belief in genius.

Forgive me while I show actual nostalgia for a minute. Tom Landry had a 7 year playing career. A year in the AAFC with the New York Yankees (yes that was a football team) and them 6 years with the Giants.

His last 2 years with the Giants as a player were 1954 and 1955. He was actually made Defensive Coordinator while he was still playing. The idea that someone needs to climb a ladder to become a Head Coach simply doesn't resonate with me. If a guy knows football, give him his shot.

Every year 31 guys will fail and 1 guy will persevere and no guy will ever dominate all of the others. I will take brains and a football pedigree every time. Tom Landry was a football genius. Bill Belichick, is a football genius. Bill Walsh was a football genius.

One thing few people know about Bill Belichick is that Bill Parcells is not his true football pedigree. His father (Steve) is. His Dad was an assistant coach and scout for the Naval Academy for 33 years. I read one time where one of his star recruits was a kid named Roger Staubach. In addition to his own Dad, the Hoodie served under 4 NFL Head Coaches before he ever served under Bill Parcells. Yet it is Parcells who gets credit for finding him. Bill Parcells wasn't even the first Head Coach he worked for with the Giants. Ray Perkins was.

Just like the Hoodie, Jason Garrett's true coaching pedigree is his own father. Jim Garrett spent 40 years in the NFL and NCAA as a Coach or scout. He has an eye for talent and a passion for football that he gave to his sons. By the way, Jim Garrett lost one coaching job for being too abusive to players on his team. If you think the Garrett brothers are soft, you don't know Jim Garrett.

The brightest of his sons is Jason. The only reason Jason has not been coaching very long is he managed to make NFL Rosters from 1989 to 2004. The main reason he did, because he was used as an extra Coach by those teams.

When he was with the Dallas Cowboys Ernie Zampese said he was Troy Aikman's personal QB coach. Forgive me for paying attention to Ernie Zampese over the myriad expertise in NFL Coaching on this forum. I do apologize.

Jason Garrett was a QB and a Safety. He does know Defense.

Jason's last year with the Dolphins was 2004. He signed on as a Coach under Nick Saban (Belichick coaching tree). Jason Garrett never played under Saban. If you believe that Saban did not want him and was forced to add him to his staff explain to me why Saban tried to take him with him to Alabama. Forgive me for paying attention to Nick Saban.

The Dolphins did not want to lose Jason Garrett. However, they respected his ties to Dallas through his Dad and they chose not to stand in his way. Had Jason Garrett stayed in Miami I do not doubt at all that he would have been hired as Cam Cameron's OC. How deep is Cameron's respect for Garrett? When Jason was getting HC looks Cameron was going to be his OC.

Bottom line, football men like Jason Garrett. From Troy Aikman, Norv Turner, and Ernie Zampese to Nick Saban and Cam Cameron he is sought after or praised for his acumen for the game.

Several weeks ago I was listening to the Cowboys Lunch Break show on DC.com. A caller called in griping about the lack of discipline and he pointed a finger at Jason Garrett. Derek Eagleton and Mickey Spagnola disagreed with the caller and said Garrett is the most detail oriented coach on this staff and if it were up to him players would practice until they got it right.

Their words, not mine.

Tom Landry gave up being a player coach in 1956 and from that season until 1959 he was a DC for the Giants. His start as a head Coach was rocky. but once the players bought into his system the Cowboys were a perennial contender. I believe football genius is eventually rewarded.

You can dismiss all of this if you wish, but you'll never sway me away from what I have wanted since 1993. You will never be more influential than the opinions of great football men who support him for his skills. Jason Garrett will win a Super Bowl as a Head Coach. Maybe more than one. It would be a shame if it was for any team other than the Dallas Cowboys.
I don't think anyone is questioning whether he has been touted as an intellectual person. He has been part of this demise whether he is touted as some great mind or his father was tough. Would he be tougher then Wade, of course! That's not saying much though. What i have seen, not anticipate is someone who yes can call a decent play for the most part. Garrett's problem is when the Dick Lebeau's or Rex Ryan or able to figure you out CAN YOU ADJUST! He can't adjust. That's what makes the good coordinator when he matched against an equally intelligent mind. Is it all his fault no, however who cares how tough his father was or how he helped Troy so much. Well it takes a heck of a kinda person to actually go out and execute. He hasn't lived up to the praise that you and others have thrust upon him! I think these four years have proven also that he's not who Jerry anticipated either, It's time for different voices PERIOD

This was hammered out about 10 pages ago, but feel free to keep discussing it.

I didnt take time to read through every post, BUT smart one it would not have to be hammered out if you didnt post the negativity in the first place!! There, Freely discussed.

If Garrett was going to be our next HC, don't you think Jerry would have already handed over the whistle?

Jerry is going outside.

No, I don't.

Sorry I hurt your feelings.

Three pages isn't "every post", by the way.

I agree Garrett hasn't earned the right to be the head coach, but I don't get the argument that he wouldn't be here ir he hadn't played here. What's wrong with hiring someone you know personally and have had personal experience with in the line of work you are hiring for?

I think OC was too ambitious for Garrett at such an early stage in his career, but to criticise Jerry for gravitating toward someone he knows and feels good about doesn't make sense.

Thats the problem. Jones hired Garrett because of his affiliation with the Cowboys in the 90s and nothing else. Jones wasn't thinking right. He was blinded by the fact that just because we did well in the glory days of the 90s that he needs to get the "crew" back for one more run. This is probably why he hired Garrett, this is why he went and tried to make Norv coach before Wade. This is why he brought in Houck and Campo. And if Aikman, Emmitt and Irvin would have been available he would have brought them back in as well.

Now the question should be why? Sure you would hire someone you know and trust if your a small business owner for a Mom and Pop store. But if your serious about winning and getting to the superbowl, and if your really a shrewd business person and want results, then you would put friendship aside and go with someone that gets results.

Jones went with friendship rather than made a sound business decision. Thus this is what you get when you decide based on other criteria's rather than results. This is why we are such in a big mess. Thus having Garrett as coach would be a bigger mess. Because Garrett got the OC position just because he was with us in the 90s and nothing else.

What else could it be? Surely not experience.
