How are you distributing 64 offensive plays?

That’s what gameplans are for. If the opponent that week is stout against the run, then I’m passing more. If they are weak against the run but good against the pass, then I’m stuffing it down their throat all game. Targets would be distributed based on who is open on that play. I’m not dictating a certain number to each WR and TE. If you want the ball throw to you, get open. If you’re getting open we will call plays where you are the 1st or 2nd read and you will get your targets.

OK, lets see.......I'm thinking
35 plays to RBs
Zeke getting 20-25 touches
Pollard a min 10

29 plays to receivers

10 targets = Coop
10 targets = Gallup
5 targets = Lamb
4 targets = Jarwin

64 total plays
Of course, these are interchangeable week-to-week and/or as the season goes on. For example, by mid-season Lamb may see his average targets increased to 8-10 but at who expense, Zeke, Coop, Pollard? Also, I'm there are where Dak may run 3-4 times. Either way, I've never really looked the offense this way as a whole until now. It highlights the ole saying, there's only so many balls. To say each player needs to take care of business WHEN his number is called is an understatement.

  • Falcons OC Dirk Koetter expects a "minimum" of 15 weekly touches for Todd Gurley.
"You're going to have 64 plays in a game on average on offense," Koetter reasoned. "Depending on where you're at in the season and wear and tear, I think the low is 15 and maybe the high end 25." They are refreshingly realistic estimates. Coaches often speak as if they have no idea how many plays their team runs in a given week. 15-20 weekly handles would be more than enough for Gurley to cash in his high-end RB2 ADP.

2 WR with 160 targets?

Only 1 WR in the league last year topped 160.

Try again.

A RB needs carries to get a rhythm going. Zeke needs 20 to 22 carries, but not over 25. However as mentioned several times above, it depends on the defense.
Get a lead and a good part of those runs can come in the 2nd half, run the clock, wear them down more.

Pollard gets 2 series, one in each half, and a few other plays here and there. Maybe give him 3 series.
20 to 25 passes to distribute amongst Lamb, Cooper, Gallup, Jarwin, and a few others getting a catch, or a ball thrown their way. Maybe 30 passes if need be.

That should be the plan, however we know it will not go that way every game.

Whatever works against the defense we’re playing. The best offenses know how to exploit weaknesses.

Washington’s secondary is pretty ugly besides Landon Collins. But their DL is going to be monstrous. So I may lean predominantly passing, quick to the outside. Screens. Some sneaky picks to get guys open over the middle. I want Dak throwing often and the ball out of his hands quickly.

Playing a team with a weaker front 7 and I’d ride Zeke all day. Hopefully they’ll have to stack the box and when they do I start attacking deep with WRs. Gallup and Lamb down the field with Cooper over the middle. Then they either keep getting burnt in the secondary or they take 8 out of the box and then I go back to Zeke.

So basically, I’m not “taking what the defense gives us” like Garrett. We’re trying to force the defense into exploitable situations.

I would hope that we attack the defense where we think we have the advantage. Alot of people hated that we kind of lined up and just did what we did and didn't change our game plan according to our opponent. With Garret gone id hope we see the offense adapt to our opponent more. If that means in one game zeke runs 23 times because they have a suspect run defense but the next game he gets it 13 times and WR's are having a field day, then that works too. As long as the offense can move the ball and score points every week, im less concerned with how they go about it.

Keep in mind MM recently said his base game plan is to score fast and let his DL take over.

With a powerful offensive line?
Any way I want to.

Just wondering -- to what extent is the staff likely to consider what we think about how the offensive load should be distributed? o_O
You aren’t aware that I’m one of McCarthy’s key advisors?

IF a rookie ( w/o preseason ) is seeing more targets than your starting player WRs, either something gone wrong or something great is happening. I mean it's great if he elevates his game to that level but what does that say for your starter.

I think Gallup’s a great WR. I just think Lamb is THAT good. We’ll find out soon. Good problem to have

I will be shocked if team with these 3 WR's and Zeke finds a way to get Pollard more than 4-5 touches. Although I like the idea of using 20 personnel and motioning Pollard to the slot to be the 4th wr. The targets and touches will change every week but I think they will be a 55/45% pass/run offense So 25-30 carries for both backs.
I see pollard getting 6-10 touches running and 3-5 receiving

10 targets for a WR is generally a league high number.

I'd expect something more like:

28 RB touches/targets.
23 Zeke 18 carries 5 catches
5 Pollard 1 carry 4 catches

34 WR/TE targets
9 Cooper
8 Gallup
7 CeeDee
6 Jarwin
4 -misc -- Back up TEs/RBs/all other WRs

2 QB carries per game.

Good play calling is almost always predicated on what the defense is trying to do as well as situational decisions.

There will need to be games where Zeke gets 25 carries and there will be some games where he gets 12-15. There’s never a concrete exact formula for a good offensive game. We saw how predictable Garrett teams were. NFL teams that are completely predictable are the easiest to prepare for.

I see a lot of fans in game day threads just screaming, “Run the Ball!”, as if it was just as simple as ensuring Zeke had 30 carries every game. You can’t win in the NFL without having balance.

The good news is I think this year’s team is loaded with offensive weapons. I’m a little concerned about our OL, especially Ty Smith with his injuries. But I know Coach Mac knows how to coach up backups as evidenced by his packer winning a SB with a lot of guys hurt.

And you think this is a good idea bc of what?

You are going to give Gallup 5 targets a game...that's probably going to be the worst plan in this entire thread...well done
Because I don’t think 30 targets are going to the top 3 WRs, unless Lamb/Cooper get 12 catches each per game. So Gallup is 3rd in line, he’s getting less. Also Rodgers under MCCarthy frequently had passes to 5-6 diff WRs, so that means #4 WR and #2 TE are involved and Daks gonna spread it around. It’s not my plan just based on what I’ve seen GB do and that I don’t think Gallup gets the same targets as Cooper/Lamb....I’m not on the 3 WRs w 1000 yards band wagon. I think 2 WRs get 1200 each

Okay, so we drink beer together and he ignores everything I say. By together I mean he drinks beer someplace, and I drink beer someplace else. And he doesn’t know who I am. But why get wrapped up in technicalities?
