By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP) – 46 minutes ago

ASHBURN, Va. – The booing fans and critical talk-radio yakkers are hardly the only ones giving the reeling Washington Commanders a hard time lately.

Members of the "Commanders family" are piling on, too.

Yes, with Washington at 2-3 despite a soft-as-can-be schedule, everyone from former stars Joe Theismann and John Riggins to people writing for the team's official Web site are ripping the Commanders.

"A lot of us have sort of tempered ourselves, to be honest with you. The expectations for this team were so much greater coming into the year — and they haven't come even close to living up to it," Theismann said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

"It's the little things that bother the living daylights out of me more than anything. ... They waste timeouts at an astounding rate. To me that's disgraceful. That's Football 101," Theismann said. "Ultimately, where does it have to fall on? It has to fall on coaching and teaching."

Don't think the current players aren't hearing the verbal shots being directed at them, at coach Jim Zorn, at front office chief Vinny Cerrato.

"I've heard guys come in and say, 'Can you believe what this guy said or that guy said?'" offensive lineman Chris Samuels said. "Even when we win, it's all negative."

Of course, it's not as though there isn't any internal finger-pointing or worrying.

As cornerback DeAngelo Hall put it Wednesday, "We're a couple steps from getting ready to panic right now."

Moments later, he acknowledged, "I don't know if we've got the right personnel in here."

Theismann, for one, said the team is "fundamentally not sound at all," referred to how Washington "mucks along in futility," called the offense "inept," and added, "What is unacceptable is the lack of effort to do more than just what is required."

Earlier in the week, during his show on a radio station belonging to Commanders owner Dan Snyder, Theismann expressed similar sentiments about the team he quarterbacked to a Super Bowl championship in the 1980s.

He's hardly alone.

Ex-players such as Hall of Fame members Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff — whose framed photos hang on a wall outside the locker room at Commanders Park — have questioned play-calling and individual players' fitness on game-day radio broadcasts. According to washingtonpost.com, Jurgensen was particularly critical of quarterback Jason Campbell, saying during a pregame show last weekend he would have used backup Todd Collins instead and that, "I think Collins would have won all four of these games."

Campbell's response to such thoughts coming from ex-Commanders?

"You can't get mad," the quarterback said. "You can't agree or disagree. They're entitled to their opinion."

Riggins, a Commanders teammate of Theismann's and member of the Hall of Fame, spared no one in a diatribe he posted as a video on YouTube, then linked to on his Twitter feed.

Riggins on Cerrato: "You're a great guy, Vin, but you're no GM."

On Zorn: "You're out of your league, Jim," and "you ... are not a head football coach in the NFL. High school? Definitely. You can coach in high school. You can coach my son in high school any time."

Through a team spokesman, Cerrato declined to respond.

Word of Theismann's — and others' — words spread among the Commanders.

"Riggins, he takes it a little overboard," receiver-returner Antwaan Randle El said. "I wouldn't call it fair or unfair. They can say a little bit more than the next person because they've played. They've been here. They want the team to be great. They were great. But at the same time, they should know there's a line."

It should not surprise anyone that the Commanders would be chastised for their showing so far. After all, Sunday's game against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs will be Washington's NFL-record sixth in a row against a team entering the matchup without a victory, and yet the Commanders have not taken advantage.

Two of their losses came against the otherwise-winless Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers (the other was against the New York Giants). Their two victories came by a total of five points against the St. Louis Rams (0-5) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-5), teams outscored by a combined 286-102 this season.

As Washington's full-time blogger noted on the team's official site: "There's very little uplifting Commanders-related news at the moment."

It is very very quickly getting close to imploding and blowing up around these parts

If I am a Cowboys fan, you better hope we pull out some wins, even in the division and get to 7-9 or 8-8

That way Dan Snyder thinks everything is swell

If the Commanders go 2-14, you may get some satisfaction from this season, but Snyder may actually be so embarrassed he makes the necessary changes to make this a proper functioning organization

Right now, its amateur hour in Ashburn, and Gibbs aint around to protect Snyder.

The fans are revolting, and to be honest these days I actually think its getting close to being a riot. I don't think Dan and Vinny can go watch warmups at FedEx Field, they are going to get boo'd cussed at and just feel uncomfortable.

The city needs to burn real bad for us to rebuild it. This Skins fan is willing to sacrifice 2009 for that.

Basically, the organization has lost the fan base completely. And its not coming back if Snyderatto are in charge next year

It's bad. Real bad. But I have hope because I've managed to delude myself in a novel way. Before I thought it would all come together, now I think it will all come apart. Fans are p.o.'d. I mean really angry. People are beginning to boycott Snyder, and I wouldn't be surprised if in the next three years he begins to run into money troubles.

You guys could go 2-14 for 10 straight years and a guy like Snyder, much like Jerry Jones, will never change his total control of the organization ways. That's just the kind of guy he is. He's always going to be that way and that will never change, no matter how bad you guys are.

Exactly. I'll be holding up a sign for two hours Sunday during peak traffic asking people not to but food, drinks, or merchandise. I was wondering if I could bring in eggs to throw at Snyder's suite, but I don't know where it is.

That's true only if he's making money.

There is a "pride" issue involved with these types.

The thing is, Snyder is incredibly sensitive. Doesn't like to be mocked, laughed at picked on, or hated.

When the stadium is empty, his 300 million plus revenue team starts hemmorging money, there are blackouts, he'll change

2-14 is the start of it.

Eggs...are you kidding? I heard Danny won't even let you guys bring paper bags to wear during the game. It is a sad state of affairs when we Cowboy fans can only take comfort in Skins misery, but the sad truth is we are only a blocked field goal and a Jake delhomme meltdown from being 1-4. Instead, we are a sloppy 3-2.

I feel your pain on the Snyder issue. This Jerry quote keeps coming back to haunt me "I don't own anything I can't manage" that might not be word for word, but you can get the gist of his meaning. I just hope his son is not as stubborn as Jerry.

The Lions went 0-16 last year and they didn't exactly go bankrupt. I doubt, very seriously, that the Commanders are going to just go absolutely bankrupt no matter how bad they get.

He might have a lot of pride but the problem is, again like with Jerry, that his pride also brings an ego with him where he'll be damned determined to prove that they can win doing things his way just so he can look back and mock all those who mocked him.

I think you guys are a lot more 2-14 seasons away from him doing the right things as an owner than just one.

People have been mocking, making fun of, and laughing at his stuff since he bought the team and it hasn't changed him. I doubt this year will either.

It's not about going bankrupt, it's about lowering the return on investment enough that Snyder decides he'd rather put his money somewhere else, into an investment that didn't make him universally hated. . . Something as simple as boycotting all food and drink sales would cost him about $30 million a year. That would be a 10% hit in revenue.

That's true. But it would take you getting a whole crap ton of fans to join you. I'd applaud the effort if you could get the fans to make that change but lets be honest here. The reality is that you'll get a couple hundred people, at best, to not buy anything for a couple of weeks. Then they'll go back to buying things and will just complain.

Fans of all teams have made these claims about how they could make a person change by organizing this or that and it never works out.

The thing is, I don't think Snyder will ever acknowledge that he's the problem... and until he does, the root problem still exists...

Of course, we have the same problem with Jerry, but Danny Boy is MUCH less qualified to make football decisions than Jerry is...

The fans are revolting

Well, that's what I always thought...

Sorry, it was too good a straight line to pass up... :D

and to be honest these days I actually think its getting close to being a riot. I don't think Dan and Vinny can go watch warmups at FedEx Field, they are going to get boo'd cussed at and just feel uncomfortable.

To be serious, I know it's an ugly time to be a Skins fan... and since you're pretty much a decent sort of fan, I can feel a little bad for you...

The city needs to burn real bad for us to rebuild it. This Skins fan is willing to sacrifice 2009 for that.

I think Snyder is telling himself he'll be able to get a name coach in the offseason, they spend like a drunk sailor on shore leave during the uncapped offseason, and everything will be just fine... so I don't think the "rebuilding" will occur prior to next season...

Basically, the organization has lost the fan base completely. And its not coming back if Snyderatto are in charge next year

Oh, I think a lot of you guys will stick with the team regardless... just like I'm still an Orioles fan, even after all these Angelos years... you just might not have your hearts in it quite as much as you have in the past...

But he has always had the fan support...that, if you ask me, is the last bastion. When, not if -- b/c it's already happening if you ask me, that happens, I believe things will change.

I think the difference between Snyder and someone like Brown or Ford is he desperately wants to win. While I cannot stand just about anything about Snyder anymore, he does spend to try and win. However, he is listening to this water-headed ******:

The man just LOOKS like an idiot! Really -- not even the Raiders would hire this buffoon.

You could also say the Skins are a couple of plays away from being 5-0:

NYG: Campbell Steps up in the pocket and isn't stripped by Umenyiora.
DET: Kick the FG and decline the penalty
CAR: Odd Muffed punt.

See? Wasn't that easy?
