How badly have we botched the offensive line?

Coaching. Plain and simple.

We are going to face a team on Sunday night who has lost their LT for the season and are playing a kid who struggled at times last year when he filled in for Lane Johnson at RT.

Think we'll get 6 sacks from one DE against him? Likely not. Because if they are having trouble, the Eagles coaching staff will not be dumb enough to not give him some help out there.

lol here we go with all of the sudden the OL is the problem. Collins is where he belongs. You do know that dallas was avg almost 200 yrds rushing per gamebefore yesterday right? The problem yesterday was Dallas was missing its all pro LT and all pro RB. And the coaches in all their wisdom gave up on the run after the first series. ATL couldnt stop the run when they went back to it.

The only reason the run really started working was when we went to 3 TEs. But even then, any time we dropped back to pass, Prescott was nailed and we were in 2nd and 3rd and longs and couldn't use the running game more.

Coaching staff is average. And this team is not talented enough to overcome mediocre coaching, especially when a couple of key players are out.

The eagles had a back-up LT give up 6 sacks in a game to the Gmen many years ago, to Osi Umenyori, IIRC. That was the last time I can recall such a thing.

Yeah, Winston Justice. But at least that was against a stud like Osi. Clayborn had only 6 sacks in his last 23 games before yesterday.

Prior to this game, the last 4 games we've been the best O-Line in football.

What we botched was the handling of Green. Last year he played 3 games for Tyron at LT and was very solid. This game he was horrendous.

Why?

Because he looked like a guard moving out to the LT spot.

He has the foot quickness, but his technique, particularly with his hands is all off. The type of hand technique needed in pass pro is different at tackle than at guard and that's exactly what he looked like out there.

And this is all because we didn't like Cooper who has been far better at LG than Green was this season.

As far as Collins goes, he's not getting paid that much either way and is still a great value given his production. We need to get him a solid year at RT and he should get better and better. Remember, Tyron had struggles when he made the switch to LT, but after a year he got enough reps in and was a completely different player.

I just don't know what we were thinking with regards to our use of Green. To say 'well, he's more comfortable playing tackle' during the season and given how well Cooper has played is about as bad of an indictment on our staff as it is for not giving Green help yesterday.

Agree with what you're saying, but a lot of backup Olinemen play multiple positions, so I was totally shocked that Green looked so pathetic playing LT. You would of assumed that Green had plenty of reps at LT this week in practice, but not by his pitiful performance.

Imagine if we never lucked into Callahan to build our OL..

I think it’s quite evident giving Garrett credit for building this line as part of the process makes for some great comedy...
I wouldn't give credit for to either Callahan or Garrett for building this Oline. They had input, but not the final say on putting this Oline together.

I am not a 100% convinced with Pollack as the OL coach. I know the line has been described as the best in NFL the past few years, but with a better OL coach they would have been the best ever and much more dominant. It's like having an iPhone X and using it to only make voice calls.

I'm not 100% Dalllas practiced at all last week.......

Pretty much all of your backup O-Linemen either stick to guard or tackle exclusively. Usually most teams have at least 7 active O-linemen...the 5 starters, then a backup swing tackle, a back swing guard. And in the cases of teams that carry 7 active O-linemen instead of 8, that backup swing guard will fill in at center.

But, it's very difficult to switch positions for O-Linemen and it was a big mistake we struggled with during the Parcells and Wade era's. We would have an O-Linemen come in and then have them play multiple positions along the O-Line either due to incompetence and/or injury. They never got stuck at one position and worked to become good at that one position and thus they expected them to be competent at numerous positions. Even the switch from say, left guard to right takes time because the movements are completely different.

Also remember that Green hasn't logged in a lot of playing time the past 12 months...again, due to injury. So, not only did we have Green switch positions, but given his injuries he hasn't logged in a lot of reps.

They tried to fit a square peg into a round hole with Green at LG, likely because he was a former 3rd round pick. And then when they moved him back to swing tackle, he's more like a hybrid of a square and round peg and now doesn't fit in anywhere.

I actually wouldn't have a problem bringing Green back next season, but we have to keep him at tackle and likely need to find some competition because we can't rely on him to stay healthy.

We turned Collins from a stud LG into a below average RT, then we turned Green from an above average RT into a bad LG, then after he washes out at guard we expect him to drop right into playing LT without any issues? Now Collins is locked in at tackle since we overpaid him, and Green was hung out to dry after spending the offseason practicing and bulking up to play guard.

Sometimes it seems like the only people this coaching staff can outsmart is themselves.

Collins was never a stud at LG, he's been much better at RT actually.

This ^^^

We botched it when our HC wanted to call plays over Cally and pissed him off so he wanted to leave. Remember he's the guy that found all these studs in the first place.

It's hard to imagine any coach, staff or GM doing what the Cowboys did to botch an otherwise great OL.

You should be banned from the site for ever saying that Green is above average anything. Im embarrassed for you.

he wasn't a stud LG. he was good. and who would you put at RT? oh yeah...Green, who is always injured and doesn't have the foot work and skills to be anything but a back up.

and its obvious everyone is having a knee jerk reaction to a loss.... calm down. relax.

Pats lost their LT who helped them win 2 rings, and a random body and some game planning held the Broncos D to 1 sack on a safety blitz the running back missed picking up.

The Cowboys leave their backup LT on an island all day and he gets annihilated.

So, so dumb.

Collins never should have been handed a job based on perceived genius of Jerry's decision to sign him when he was passed over in the draft. Leary should have been retained and Collins and a vet should have been in a real competition for RT. Tyron's injury issues is now another problem that will have to be addressed.

The OL hasn't been botched.

You just have to have coaches that are aware that there is a weakness and gameplan around it.

We don't even have that.

Our middle school offense needs help.

Usually when coaches replace their all-pro left tackle with a guy that is oft-injured and can't beat another journeyman for the guard position they have the common sense to alter their protection by, you know, helping with the TEs and RBs. Real high level stuff.

I guess that was just too complicated for the coaching staff to figure out what literally every single person watching the game could see. Clap Clap, you'll stop him next time Chaz.

Leary was our first OL pick with Callahan on board and he worked out Frederick and had the Wisconsin connections...
