Agree with what you're saying, but a lot of backup Olinemen play multiple positions, so I was totally shocked that Green looked so pathetic playing LT. You would of assumed that Green had plenty of reps at LT this week in practice, but not by his pitiful performance.
Pretty much all of your backup O-Linemen either stick to guard or tackle exclusively. Usually most teams have at least 7 active O-linemen...the 5 starters, then a backup swing tackle, a back swing guard. And in the cases of teams that carry 7 active O-linemen instead of 8, that backup swing guard will fill in at center.
But, it's very difficult to switch positions for O-Linemen and it was a big mistake we struggled with during the Parcells and Wade era's. We would have an O-Linemen come in and then have them play multiple positions along the O-Line either due to incompetence and/or injury. They never got stuck at one position and worked to become good at that one position and thus they expected them to be competent at numerous positions. Even the switch from say, left guard to right takes time because the movements are completely different.
Also remember that Green hasn't logged in a lot of playing time the past 12 months...again, due to injury. So, not only did we have Green switch positions, but given his injuries he hasn't logged in a lot of reps.
They tried to fit a square peg into a round hole with Green at LG, likely because he was a former 3rd round pick. And then when they moved him back to swing tackle, he's more like a hybrid of a square and round peg and now doesn't fit in anywhere.
I actually wouldn't have a problem bringing Green back next season, but we have to keep him at tackle and likely need to find some competition because we can't rely on him to stay healthy.
