How Bout That Blowout over the Lions?

Excuse the sarcasm as I just woke up after a twelve-hour sleep. I was up the previous 36 hours largely due to my three-year old. I was running on adrenaline during the Cowboy game. I just woke up to Mike and Mike and they were mentioning the Colts blowout that I obviously never saw. Apparently, that wasn’t much of a game.

What was much of a game was that contest being played in the Motor City. I am still scratching my head as to how Dallas won. Well, I know how Dallas won in one name…

…Romo!

On December 9, 2007, Tony Romo took another step forward to the Holy Grail of NFL quarterbacks. Once again, regardless how dim the game looks for the Cowboys winning, Romo just keeps raring back and firing. Romo was the only player on Dallas that was flawless that Sunday (check that, I’ll throw in Miles Austin as well). That is of course, unless you want to count the questionable bounce pass to Witten (in which I was glad Wade did not challenge), the pass to Hurd that went about five yards over his head, or the pass that looked like a bar of soap slipped out of his hands (in which I referred to as the “Quincy” pass).

The final pass, to Witten over the middle for the game-winning touchdown, was magnificent. With 22 seconds left, Dallas had enough time to take one shot down the middle of the field. Romo took it and the Cowboys came away with a 28-27 win that clinched the NFC Eastern Division title for the Cowboys. Their first since 1998 and 20th division title overall.

That is enough with the love on a game in which Dallas really had no business winning. The Cowboys should have throttled this team the way Seattle took care of Arizona, or Denver took care of Kansas City. Even with a 10-day rest, Dallas came out flatter than a plate of spit. There were running backs not hitting the hole (Jones), running backs not picking up the blitz (Barber), fumbles (Barber and Witten), terrible punting (McBriar), even worse kicking (Folk), mistackles (entire defense), defensive line being pushed around, linebackers that disappear on running plays, and of course, wide open receivers for Kitna to pick apart. Oh, yeah the pass rush – or lack thereof. It was terrible!

The play that irritated me most of all was when Kitna easily converted the 3rd and 10 on his own 1-yard line. Could McDonald be more open? This is the play where I lost it.

I do want to thank the Lions for the several pock kicks on their kickoffs. Getting the ball between the 35 to 50 yard lines is always nice.

The bottom line is this though. December is here, and there has not been any indication after this first game in December that the traditional December slump has gone away.

I think we'll play much, much better versus the Eagles this coming weekend.

Despite my excitment about the win, I was one of those that was "nervous" about this game... This game showed why...it's December. What, 16-33 since our last December/January w/ a winning record?

well..17-33 now. Agreed, 3 games, 2 game lead over Green Bay. Offense rescued the defense. It was like the defense got punched in the mouth on the first drive and really never recovered. Defense forced 3 punts, the one at the end being the biggest, but otherwise were pushed around

Yeah, I mentioned the fact that Henry gave up two huge plays when they were on the 1 yard line. He made a huge tackle a play before but gave up two big huge passes after that :bang2: .

I never predict Blowouts this is the NFL and pros play on both teams. Lions were fighting for this playoff lives at 6-6 and facing the team most feel will be the NFC Champ was only added fuel for a desperate team. I tip my hat to the Lions for coming up with a good game plan and fighting their tails off.

I was expecting a blowout of the Lions and predicted 64-3 as the final score (not realistically of course). Yet I am not in the least disappointed with the win.

The Patriots have not blown out everyone they have played and won squeakers over the Eagles and Ravens, teams they should have crushed. Great teams find ways to win and take advantage of the breaks that go their way. The standings don't take into account the point spread, just wins and losses (unless you get into a tie-breaker).

The Lions had their chances but couldn't take advantage of them. Romo's fumble should have sealed the deal but the Lion player tried to pick it up and run with it like an idiot and it ended up being recovered by Kosier, keeping the drive alive.

I saw it a number of times in the Patriots' win over the Stealers. Moss fumbles the backwards pass yet gets it back to Brady before anything bad can happen, and of course Brady throws a deep pass to Gaffney for a TD. There were several other plays in that game that could have been bad for the Patriots but they turned them into positives for them. The same goes for the Cowboys this year.

There really isn't that much physical talent separating the top teams from the bottom teams, the major difference is in the mental makeup of the players and the team mentality. The top teams make the most of opportunities while limiting those given to the other team.

A win is a win and whether we beat the Lions by 61 or 1 we are still 12-1 on the season and that is reason to be very happy!

If you are going to count Barber's fumble, then why not include Romo's fumble?

If the Lion's defender doesn't kick the ball, there would have been no Romo comeback. This board would have been in a completely different state.

Thumper, like you,I am in no way disappointed with this win because we didn't steam-roll the Lions. Good God,what do people expect? You would have thought we lost and suffered catastrophic injuries,to boot. A lot of folks on this board ******in' and moanin'...Have we gotten that uppity,or do folks remember all the times we were in the same position, and found a way to lose? Perhaps this type of WIN is the type this team needed to refocus for down the road. We are two victories away from home field advantage....When was the last time we could say that? If GB loses a game, which I doubt,we are one game away. We won the NFC East for Crissake...We didn't sneak in the back f***ing door...We took it by force.
Be proud of that...Very,very proud. The NFC is right there for our taking...And from there???
Me personally, having gone thru all the good times, and painfully remembering the bad,I am enjoying the hell out of this team.

When did Julius not hit the hole yesterday? He had some good yardage on some carries and then on others there was no blocking. I don't recall him not hitting the hole on any of his carries yesterday.

I was thinking the very same thing. Three weeks ago. But I had the Lions in mind.

If the narrow escape forces some Dallas fans to be less bombastically certain of blowouts in games still to come, it may improve the "realistic quotient" of comments on the board.

It should instill in fans a nervous confidence.

Eagles games are always hard hitting. I think the Boys take the Eagles more serious than the Skins. Even when the Eagles are bad and we are good, we have to prepare, because the Eagles try to kill us. :) I look forward to the hard hits on both sides.

At some point, I think that you have to give the Lions and their coaches credit. They get paid to make plays too. They always play well at home.
