Just some info here:

The salary cap began in 1994... just after Dallas had won back to back SBs.
Many conspiracy theorists say it was meant to specifically dismantle the mighty Cowboys.
As Prime mentioned, there was a large gap between elite teams and the rest of the league.
And as Short said, the NFC Championship was the best game each year.

SF stole from Dallas to win SB in '94. Dallas returned to win it all in '95.
I can remember John Madden saying they were the worst 12-3 team he'd seen
at the start of Monday Night Football but SF had lost on Sunday and suddenly
home field was up for grabs. Dallas torched Arizona that night and secured home
field. SF never recovered, losing to GB. What happened next? Well, I'll just say this,
Brett Favre never won a game in Texas Stadium. (Look it up, young people... lol)

That final SB was won in spite of coaching. The players held together all season.
The leader... was Troy Aikman..... Royalty. Royalty, indeed.
Good post robo! :clap::clap::clap:

Jimmy Johnson was an elite tier head coach, especially when it came to the psychological aspect of coaching, and an elite tier GM on top of that. No Cowboys coach since has been in his zip code. The closest was Parcells, who was already checked out mentally by 2006.

He built a crazy good roster top to bottom. There was a sort of tragic inevitability to how they won games sometimes, like being run over with a steam roller very slowly. Think about how many Hall of Famers and ought to be Hall of Famers were on those teams, it's just ridiculous. This generation of Cowboys teams had Witten and Ware and uhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah that's it.

Aikman was solidly above average in the regular season from like 1991-1995, and more importantly he was steady and reliable. He was basically ideal for the way Jimmy Johnson wanted them to play football. In the 3 Super Bowl playoff runs he was on a completely different level though, like almost every game he had a passer rating over 100, which is crazy NOW, never mind then. Sadly, by the 1996 regular season he was already visibly in decline. My pet theory is if Jimmy stayed they win 4 straight Super Bowls but probably trail off from there because of a combination of Aikman's health and the rules no longer favoring that kind of "super team."

It's not surprising Jimmy Johnson hangs out with Bill Belichick, he's probably the only other guy he can talk to on his level football-wise. Belichick has to go about it a completely different way though because everything around the game is so different.

The team won 3 Super Bowls with Aikman at QB, if that's what you mean.
He played on a team with a suffocating defense, dominating offense and, great coaching.

Green bay and Aaron Rodgers (or anyone else) was not going to drive the ball the length of the field in 80 seconds on that team. He gets sacked or intercepted within the first play or two...no way Green Bay's oline holds them back.
Amen. There wouldn't have been a last minute drive to start with. It would have been over in the 1st half.

He played his first 5 years with a real head coach whom set him up to win his 3rd with a puppet.

Aikman was the most overrated Cowboy QB ever. He rode Emmitt and Irvin all the way to the HOF. Once he lost Irvin, he was done.

That's crazy talk. He was just as important as Smith and Irvin. He was lights out when it counted most in the playoffs . He deserves his HOF status and it's ridiculous to demean that . All that being said Jimmy , was by miles, the biggest reason they all won because he was the architect of the entire thing,

This is absolutely true..but it doesn't change the fact that even if we had won this game..the defense is not good enough..rod needs to be relieved of his duties asap
Sir Jerry put together a great offensive unit that will be wasted on garbage defensive teams.

On the other hand, be a QB for Dallas for a decade and post a 2-4 career playoffs record and no Super Bowl appearances you are a god.
And, yes, the Romonians will point to Dan Marino as never winning a Super Bowl game, rarely pointing out that Marino played in 18 playoff games, winning 8 of them.

Easy Answer:

He has a brain and used it in addition to his talent and arm.

Throughout the last drive, what was he saying as an announcer?

DO NOT GIVE THE BALL BACK TO AARON RODGERS!!

This team deserved to lose because they are STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

Anyone who thinks we should have just scored a TD with 90 seconds left and relied on our defense (or any defense) to stop Rodgers is simply in denial also.
If you want to play the IF game, if we had the defensive talent of the 90s team we would have won.
What would have Aikmen done different all else equal.

I know it's fun to yell COACHING here but if you think that's the only thing missing with this year's defense I think you're kidding yourself. There are some talent and experience gaps, but they're also made worse by playing a dated scheme (aka, coaching).
It's not just fun to yell coaching...it alone has cost us 2 games this year. Horrible situational play calls and outdated schemes. We have more talent than our record shows. Talent is a reason for losing. Coaching should never be.

Romo was brilliant too, as you can tell from his color commentary nowadays. But his team wasn't good enough so he didn't win anything, because - get this - football's a team sport.
