How did Collins Play Yesterday?

1. It was a bad loss. Tampa Bay lost to New Orleans like 31-3 this time last year and went on to win the Super Bowl. Chill out. This is a great team and they will bounce back. I imagine this loss will help them the rest of the year and we can be glad it was against an AFC team.

2. Does anyone have an opinion on how La'el played yesterday? I know Steele got torched but just curious how Collins looked in only his second game in almost 2 years. I didn't see him get destroyed and don't think he had any holding calls so just curious if we think he'll stay at RT once Tyron is back. That would be ideal because I still don't think Steele is as great as everyone thinks, even without accounting for his tough assignment yesterday.

He had one holding call where he basically grabbed the guy around the neck and took him to the ground. Don't think he played terrible, but I think he was rusty for sure. We need Tyron back in a big way. Steele looked like he did much of last year

I don't have any in depth analysis to share on how the OL played. The only observation I have for Collins is it seemed that he was much better in run blocking than pass protection. He certainly looked rusty against some very average pass rushers. The guy seems to be able to roll out of bed and create run lanes though.

Everytime I focused on him he was blocking his man off the camera. Got bulled a couple of times but reset nicely. Maintained a workable pocket. He had a couple of bad snaps but not bad considering his time off.

Allowed some pressure and held on one play, but overall, his play was good enough as far as pass blocking goes. Most of the pressure came from the other side or blitzes. If Smith is going to continue to be out, I think we've got to either explore the option of Collins playing on the left or give Nsekhe a chance to hold down the spot. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love what Steele has given us as a RT, but that doesn't mean he can play LT. I understand why the coaching staff made the move, because A) Steele played better than Nsekhe in the preseason both on the right and left and 2) Collins hasn't played LT since college. Nsekhe gave up some pressure when he came in for Smith against Minnesota, but he was much better than what we saw from Steele against Denver. We need to acknowledge that we made a mistake thinking all that meant that Steele would be able to handle the LT spot and adjust the line accordingly.

We actually ran the ball pretty well. Problem is once we got down double digits we pretty much abandoned it
Agreed. They were breaking off chunks up the middle. I think behind Martin. They tried passing way to much. Like they thought Dak could just play the way he was. Once it was confirmed the passing game was off, the wheels fell off the whole team.

  • Comparing Steele and La'el at RT:
    • Steele: Better angles/execution on run blocks.
    • La'el: More power but often blocks the wrong player on run plays or blocks from the wrong angle.
    • La'el is not a smart player. All other players were 'smarter' (including Tyron) when Frederick was the OC.
    • Pass Blocking: Not a big difference.
  • LT:
    • Neither should play LT.
    • Steele played RT in college.
    • Steele struggled at LT in the preseason.
    • La'el played LT in college but was never projected to play LT in the NFL.
    • La'el would need to lose weight if they were going to try him at LT.

I thought Collins did okay. The Broncos loaded the box with 8 and 9 guys depending on down and distance, including 1st downs. I was surprised how they were trying to run into those stacked boxes early in the game.

Didn't Steele play LT in the Senior Bowl where Bradley Anae abused him?

Collins wasn't any better than steele, ok maybe he was marginally better on this day. I expect Collins to get better next week.

La'el looks more like a guard than ever. I'm sure his conditioning was down (still? again? i dunno at this point), but there were times he was trying to extend to block without even moving his feet. Its gonna take him awhile to get back up to speed and I'm a "bit" concerned he's lost the athleticism to play tackle at that weight.
