Actually, that's precisely what he does in camp and in preseason games.

Great point--beat me to it. Parcells likes to put people in different situations to see how they react. Your support for Parcells starting only players deserving a start is from the regular season--this is preseason. It's not the same thing.

Wrong.

The player will have to earn the STARTING SPOT (or in Hurd's case
injury)to get a looksee with the 1st unit in preseason.

Back-up players don't get playing time with starters unless they've earned it.

Your insinuating that Parcells will plug in any player with the 1st units just to get a look.

Then why have competitions?

thanks for the feedback guys

I do not like Al Johnson he gets pushed back to much for my liking. I got a chance to watch the game again and I really like what I saw from Gurode. If he keeps playing like that the job is his.

I guess you just haven't been watching Parcells. He moves people around. He wants to see how [insert player] performs with the first team. The 3rd week of the preseason is the time when the true starters take the starting position and we get to see a glimpse of regular season-like play.

The problem with Gurode, though, is that he locks on to one guy and just blocks him. Perfect example: On the 4th play of the 2nd drive he doubles up with Kosier on one of the d-linemen who is neutralized and let's the LB run right past him to make the tackle. He could have (and should have) easily moved on to the LB and Julius might have picked up a few more yards...or might have juked the defenders and busted for some major yardage.

Might have been by design. In both zone and lane type blocking each position has a distinct area to block or assignment that requires discipline. Playing mexican jumping bean on run blocking is unrealistic. On run versus blitz, the RB has to just create a miss sometimes. That LB may not have been his responsibility, so I'm not ready to dump that on him. I for one was pleasantly surprised w/ Gurode's line calls. His blocking has never been in question, just his ability to make correct blocking adjustment calss for the line collectively. I thought he did great, and yes I know it's the first pre-season game:eek::

Thats exactly right. BP talks all about it in his press conferences.

Actually I was mistaken and it was the right DE (and it was the 3rd play of the 2nd drive not 4th). That said, there was absolutely no conceivable reason to let the DE by him. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

So whats your point.

The rotation at the center spot stopped 12 to 13 practices ago............joining RG, LG and LT as the spots on the 1st unit with little to no rotation during practice.

No suprise that once Rivera, Kosier and Flozell took to the bench Gurode was right beside them.

Charles "Hero" did well...but I didn't see him dominating any smaller 4-3 DT's in the run game. I didn't see a whole lot of dominating from anyone as a run blocker.

That being said...it was a decent first game performance, they are coming along. I would expect after this next game we will see a clear cut "starting unit" working with Bledsoe and TO.

Johnson, Gurode...it doesn't matter to me...whoever can the best job consistently is what I want to see.

I think Gurode is having a good camp and did a fine job in the game on Saturday. I said that in one of the first posts in this thread. He may get the starting nod in Jacksonville, but I wouldn't place much emphasis on who starts in a preseason game.

Ya know, if calling out line assignments is Gurode's biggest weakness, why not have a vet like Rivera or Kosier do that part of the job? They are right next to the OC, so they pretty much see what he sees. That way, all Gurode has to do is listen to the player calling out assignments, and block the guy they tell him to. Usually it's the Center's job to call blocking assignments, but if that is all that is standing in the way of us having a weak but smart Center, or one that is a bigger, stronger blocker, it seems like a no-brainer.
