How do we stop the Woodhead flare route in this scheme?

Having a 290 lb dlineman chasing him or Sproles vs. Philly is not going to work. What is the issue?

Really the way to counter it is for a LB and the appropriate DE to read it, and someone make an open field tackle. Easier said than done on Sproles (not to mention our all pro LB core) but since just locking a safety on Sproles seems a little heavy handed, it needs to be a combination of the DE and LB making a tackle, maybe with some CB help if they can shed a block.

It's simple in my opinion.

Somebody needs to go in there before he flares out and knock the mess out of him. Players like Woodhead and Sproles that make their money on plays like that are usually very small. While they are at the line of scrimmage acting like they are trying to block or even if they are flaring out into the flats, somebody needs to get to him early in the play and preferably early in the game and lay the wood on him.

I know it's easier said than done but that'll at the very least have the potential to rattle the player and the scheme from working as well as it has been.

It's already been said, but zone. Covering those patterns is supposed to be a strength of the cover 2. It was created to stop those short west coast style plays.

Assuming we are playing Tampa 2, yes, the corners have responsibilities in the flat. The problem is that we didn't play much Tampa 2 last year. I missed the first part of the game, so I have no idea what we were running when Woodhead as in.

Do you mean last year, or last night? Because the first half of the season last year we played Tampa-2 almost exclusively, until it was clear our CB's sucked at it.

Exactly. And everyone is swearing we're going to play even more man coverage this year. So that coverage is going to be on a LB or a safety.

And you can't really jam those guys because they're coming out of the backfield.

I'm eager to see what all these arm chair D-Coordinators got to say.

Really, we went into the game missing half of the starters on the defense but isn't that just par for the course for us? If so, then it's going to be an uphill battle on that side of the ball. The scheme is proven the players are not.

The answer is the same for countering any designed offensive play: coordinated and disciplined players executing the defensive scheme properly. Having talented players is a plus though.

That's difficult and dangerous. If he beats you off the line before you make contact, then you're done. You're not going to catch up. You would have to find somebody that it not the primary coverage guy to bump him, but that tends to take that player away from other duties. I've seen a DE move out and bump a guy while leaving the actual coverage to the players behind him. Obviously, that takes your DE out of pass rushing.
