I know that you keep saying this (Bigg is better at RT) but Davis' worst season was at RT. Davis actually prefers LT if not playing OG_this is straight from the horse's mouth.
That's a darn shame. Some people are very foot dominant and can't just flip across the other way. I think Jacob Rogers had a hard time playing RT compared to LT.
Well, if Davis can't play RT then we are probably better off as we are because I think Free will be a better LT than Davis is at this stage of his career.
I just get frustrated with his pad level in the goal-line situations. He is a tall, big man and I think opposing tackles are diving underneath him and creating a huge pile right at the LOS. That is the downside of being tall.
A solution may be to move him more to a tackle type position in those situations where the opposing player is less able to sell themselves out in the same manner.
I don't think Davis is a bad guard at all.. I just think he is a bit too much feast or famine as a pass protector at that position. Perhaps Houck can continue to improve these two aspects of his game because on the other plays he is lights out. I guess you have to take some of the good with some of the bad.
Kosier is much more consistent in his play. He knows his assignments and will only rarely whiff on a protection. He is excellent in space just like a guard should be. Conversely, he isn't the best drive blocker.
I do think Free and Kosier will make for a very athletic left side of the OL next year and I am eager to see what they can do.
Too bad my dreams of Davis at RT and some roadgrader 6'3 330 pound RG (think a young Larry Allen) will never materialize. It would have been awesome.
Anyhow, I can live with this for next year:
Free Kosier Gurode Bigg Colombo
Hopefully Brewster can take Colombo's spot in a year or two as I would like a better athlete at that spot.
