We went 9-7 last season with Romo missing three games and playing hurt for several games after that. Unless he was predicting Romo to get injured again, I don't see how 7-9 is a "fair" prediction. Romo has had at least a .600 winning percentage every season as a starter, and he's suddenly going to drop to .438?
I think after the offseason we had -- one in which we focused on dismissing petulant but skilled players -- there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding this franchise. Truthfully, did you never wonder what the offense might look like without T.O.? Did you have that much trust in Roy? Did you know Austin would step up?
Not to mention what I think was the crutch of Emmitt's argument: That 44-6 loss exposed the underbelly of what was a gutless Cowboys team and that the loss, coupled with the dismal way we shut down Texas Stadium, would transfer over to the 2009 season.
No, I don't think taking that "leap" was unfair -- Romo's winning percentage be damned.
To be noted, as I said before, I also would not have found a 9-7 or 10-6 prediction to be unfair. Yes, I think it was fair to question this team's mindset and offensive ability given the Eagles loss and T.O.'s departure, respectively.
