I think it's more along the lines of lack of quality competition at the safety spots.

Before Jones, it was projects, UDFAs and Sensabaugh manning our safety spot for a handful of years.


After Hamlin backfired, seems we went el cheapo at safety for a bit.

Jones is the starter at FS which was the position Wilcox played.

Heath appears to have passed him on the depth chart as a backup.

Carr said he would love to try playing FS. They could consider him as the emergency backup because he might be the 3rd CB this season and they appear to have a couple of young CBs that are decent (Brown, Olatoya).

I think Frasier the SS rookie is likely to replace him on the 53. Wilcox is a pretty good
athlete but, he's just not a very good football player.

Was reading this article today and this excerpt stood out to me.

Daniel Jeremiah, a former NFL scout who now works with the NFL Network, once said this about what Patriots coach Bill Belichick looks for in a safety: “You can dominate from this position … You have to be a smart player. Take great angles. Not fooled by play-action. You cannot win with a dumb safety. They have to make all the calls.”

I think Wilcox misses on every one of those attributes.
