How does Marinelli defend against the Eagles?

I just went back and watched the Eagles 1st quarter scoring drives against GB.

GB made ZERO defensive substitutions even when Philly did. GBs linebackers were TERRIBLE. Most of Bradfords passes were to RBs, who were all poorly covered. GBs linebackers were out of position on runs and passes and had no strong pursuit.

It was almost like GB didn't come to play. Philly sure did and just made them look stupid. You have to be physical with Philly and disrupt them. GB didn't even come close to doing this.

So while it was a fine effort by Philly, GB was pretty pathetic.
Interesting article on Grantland about Gary Patterson's defense at TCU and how he coaches against spread/hurry-up offenses:

Fascinating article. I wonder how much defensive coaches in the NFL study these things?

While they don't use him a ton, you can't let Sproles get a lot of one on one stuff with LBs. I don't care how good you think Lee or Hitchens or McClain is or can be. Sproles will eat up any of those guys.

I think Seattle used a lot of nickel last year against them and actually shifted Maxwell over from outside CB to inside slot guy to take Matthews out of the game. They didn't feel Cooper could beat their 3rd CB outside.

Makes sense.

I'd guess there is a lot of trickle down from the NFL to the college ranks, less so the other way around. JMO

Don't know if they do, but they should. We used to call that adopting "best practices" in the corporate world.

I've noticed many quarterbacks make their calls based on the position of a single player like a safety or middle linebacker. Patterson's system would definitely make life more complicated for a QB who's lazy or not bright. By splitting up the defense, I like the idea of a creating uncertainty at the QB position. It should serve to slow down the offense and it's pace.

How is Chip Kelly going to attack our defense? How is he going to protect his fragile QB from ensuing onslaught of our pass rushers?

He will call lots of draws, traps, and counters to take advantage of our defensive line getting upfield. Our biggest weakness is their biggest threat on offense. We are susceptible to the run, and our guys like to get upfield. Two things that their offense could take advantage of to big gashes in the run game. Then the play action becomes a real threat and the holes are huge.

To be unbiased about it, we don't match up to their offense very well at all. Our games with Philly will most likely be shootouts in the high 30's and above.

Well we looked pretty good in that mid December game in Philadelphia last year

So all teams with a good pass rush will get gashed by Philly huh?
