How important is QB running ability for the running game/offense?

I argue that it has a tremendous effect on YPC when an offense has the opposing defense’s respect/attention at the handoff point in guessing who might run with the ball. Obviously, a robust passing offense can assist with hesitation at this point-but the threat of a QB who has good/great mobility seems like the X factor in so many games now.

Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Jayden Daniels, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, etc can all scoot when necessary and it creates so much chaos for an opposing defense. The Eagles did a lot of passing to win the SB game, but I thought some of the most back breaking plays came when Hurts realized it was time to run it himself and scrambled away from pressure for big first downs (when the receivers were well covered). KC’s team looked defeated after one of those plays. What say you?

Look at who has rings. How many of them are mobile like you want?

I am of the mindse that a player like a Montana that can scramble and if necessary get vital yards is about the best you can get. Like Staubach. Elway. Passers first who can run if they have to.
NOT a running QB

I don’t mean that an offense cannot function well without a QB that has great running ability. I would argue that every QB needs decent mobility just to keep a defense honest. Joe Burrow can scramble occasionally. I meant in terms of how it affects an offense’s run game-how much does it augment it.

Well that was then, this is now. A QB has to have at least some mobility in today’s…unless everything else is just perfect. I used to share your viewpoint, but times have changed. Mahomes is pretty damn mobile

Brady has how many rings vs Jackson
I could go on

Then go on… I already know all about Brady. I’m not talking about what was, I’m talking about the current trend in the league. The guys that are actually playing now. How many statues do you actually see playing in the position these days? Goff?, Stafford?, That’s really about it… Unless you want to include Dak… who might be considered a statue going forward…

Pretty much every other QB, has some mobility…

You do know these things called trends have a shelf life, right?

Lol… Have you been paying attention? Yes, trends do come to an end. But I noticed you did not answer the question. How many true statue QBs are left in the league? Or, if you prefer, how many pure pocket passers that do not use mobility to their advantage? I’m pretty sure you can count them on one hand, and have a couple fingers left over. Even the next Manning is trying to be more mobile.

Could it cycle back the other way? Of course. But that’s not the current trend.

The passing game was king for about a decade or more… The old version of the middle linebacker position became almost extinct… Replaced with smaller/faster guys that had some coverage ability. Once pretty much every team was building their rosters to defend the passing game with smaller/faster defenders, it became a lot easier for teams to start focusing on the run. And if you have a QB with that running ability as well, well then you basically have eliminated a defender. Yes, the legal will cycle back the other way… It always does. It’s just not where it is right now.

I pay attention to history
the trend right now is more mobile QBs but ask yourself is that because they are better or because that is what is available?

That is sort of like asking what came first, the chicken or the egg?… We were already talking about a circular/cyclical league

Depends entirely on the QB. Tom Brady/Peyton Manning/Drew Brees? Doesn’t matter they can’t run. Conversely. Anthony Richardson/Justin Fields? Kinda helps but mostly doesn’t matter that they can run

Pat Mahomes? Has a huge impact. Lamar Jackson? Has a huge impact. Cam Newton? Has a huge impact

Cam newton did NOT have a huge impact

On that, we can agree. And in the league this season, it’s better to have a QB with some mobility than one that doesn’t have any…
I honestly think a complete statue will not survive in todays NFL. If you cannot at least move around, sense the rush, you will get your brains scrambled. David Carr was probably the best example and that was twenty years ago.

Brady was very good at that; Manning got the ball out so quick being a total stump did not matter.
