December 1965 was born into it, my Dad became a fan of the young upstarts, first play I recall seeing was Jim O'Briens kick going through the uprights in SB V. Cried like a baby and I didnt know why.
I was an original member of the Dallas Texans Huddle Club, and The Dallas Cowboys Kids Club in 1960.
Loved Cotton Davidson and Abner Haynes, as well as little Eddie LeBaron and big Bob Lilly.
The Texans became the Chiefs, and I've never liked them since.
Even in year one for a lousy expansion team, we knew Landry was going to be good.
A little bit of my Cowboys fandom: Have followed them as a result of my Dad and his love of Tom Landry and the class his organization stood for. In fact we were exchanging emails (last Sunday was his birthday) last week after the Saints game.
From me: "I know you didn’t watch it, but this occurred during the victory formation kneel down at the end of the game Sunday night. It really brought back memories and a tear thinking about my papa and his Dallas Cowboys on his birthday…
To quote a member from one of the boards I belong to: "What makes it even sweeter is the style our Oline plays with. No nonsense, “I’m gonna hit you in your mouth and when you get back up I'm going to do it again”. They honored Landry in their performance, all the way to the last snap."
Forward this to Brett if you have his email…"
From Dad "It was the players, starting with the late Don Meredith, and their rivalry with the more popular Green Bay Packers that first attracted me to the Cowboys. Check out the two games they lost to the Packers (including the second one, which was the famous “ice bowl”) and you’ll see the epitome of professional football. And then there was the rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers. All class. I can’t say that about the subsequent Jerry Jones years."
It was an exchange that I started to alert him to the Hitch done last Sunday night. I knew he wouldn't have watched it since he stopped watching professional football when Coach Landry was fired. That's how much Coach meant to him. I'm 50 and have followed The Dallas Cowboys as long as I can remember and The Baltimore Colts until they moved.
Also, I've also asked Dad to promise me he will watch one Dallas Cowboys game this year. I'm still waiting for his answer...
1966.....I was 7. Anyone else remember the Walt Garrison commercial? "I'm Walt Garrison. I don't smoke but still enjoy.......just a pinch!" LOL. Loved that guy!
December 18 1967....I had no choice.. I have an old 8mm film of my dad and Roger shooting free throws that is priceless. He was in the National Guard and it was a clean detail for them . Living in NC we were blasted by the Commanders and he was tired of the Pig snouts. Bet his whole paycheck one we on the boys. Well, he won...now i blessed to be a fan. My wallas are covered and my "Man Cave" full. I'm a Dad, Husband and Cowboys fan. Can't never remove any of them.
My first memory of being a Cowboys fan was when I was seven years old. I remember watching the 1981 NFC championship game against the 49ers. After Dwight Clark made "The Catch", I started yelling he was out of bounds and began crying after I realized it wasn't true. My mother - God bless her soul - came into the living room from the kitchen and wondered why I was crying. She tried to comfort me and said "it's just a game" or something like that.
Birth...8/1/1975...I cant ever remember not being a Cowboys fan. I was already collecting as much Cowboys stuff I could get my hands on by 1st grade. Stickers, posters, pencils, football cards....
I remember I could tell you the players name if you shouted out his number all through the 1970s and all those who wore it before........and be 100% correct........even the 3rd stringers..LOL.......was a glorious time before player movement.
1986 - When I came to the States. Was told to pick a team (Was September, flew into Long Island) Was a 22 year old Rugby player, knew nothing of American football. Got lucky and picked the Cowboys, everyone told me how ****** they were. Made me root for them even harder - and when they finally got good again ....
Since the 1994 season when I was ten. I remember losing like 6 bucks to my classmates after sf stole that NFC championship...lol. That and tearing up as the game ended. I hated number 21 and 36 in red so much after that game. I still remember seeing signs in the crowd making fun of Aikmans name.
