How many players away are the Boys on D

I'd say they could use another corner or 2 for depth purposes. I think they're fine at corner.

They could use a free safety. Maybe Wilcox is that. He's getting better by the week but they could use either ra improvement there from within or simply add the personnel.

They can use another linebacker for depth purposes.

The #1 position should be a pass rusher though whether its as a 3 Tech or was a end.

Essentially they are playing with two #2 CBs in Scandrick and Carr. There are worse things in the world, however, having a true #1 CB would really help.

Had Claiborne not busted, they would have been sitting pretty with 4 very solid corners.

I disagree. There's not many corners in this league playing better than Scandrick and Carr and some guys who were considered #1's like Jonathan Joseph, Joe Haden and a few others aren't shutting anyone down. You can win in this league with the corner play. Even Revis hasn't been shut down worthy. Richard Sherman either.

2- 1 Tech, I think Crawford and Coleman are the future at the 3 Techs. If Brent pans out, subtract 1 from this position.

1- LB, not sure if Carter, Durant or Wilber will be here long term. I think is safe to say they will resign Ro to pair with Lee. Hitchens should be ready but if all three somehow leave, we're stuck with no depth. Resign Durant or Carter and none needed Here.

2- DE, will Spencer back? Not sure. How about Selvie? Not sure either will be here long term. I'd love to see Mincey on the left paired with DLaw this year. However, longterm we need another one and one for depth.

1- CB. Love OScan, Moore and Patmon. Not sure how Carr and Mo pan out for the long term. I see one more being needed, because I see only one of the two resigning/restructuring coming back between Carr and Mo.

Fine at Safety. Would actually like to see Moore get some FS time in certain packages, but like where we are here longterm especially in regards to expectations and roles.

So I see us as being about 4 productive youngsters away and about 6 overall for longterm depth.

Plus a pass-rushing defensive lineman.

One additional dominant pass rusher would likely make this team a Super Bowl favorite, if it's not already.

For it not to be a concern Mickey and Brian said yesterday on Talking Cowboys 2-3?

If they can keep McClain, Carter, Durant and Lee, the Cowboys have an embarrassment of riches at the linebacker position. Given how Sterling Moore has filled in admirably for Claiborne, I would not be surprised to see the Cowboys trade Claiborne, if he has any value. Dependent on rather or not Milton is willing to renegotiate his contract and dependent on rather or not Josh Brent/Amobi Okoye are able to provide strong finishes to the season, I'd say the Cowboys are set at both the 1 and 3 tech DT spots. Safety could use some depth, but Church/Wilcox are looking to be at the very least solid contributors. That leaves DE, which features guys who aren't going to get any better in Spencer, Mincey and Selvie. We will have to wait and see on Demarcus Lawrence, but if they are going to target someone high for the defense it has to be either DE or corner, unless the bpa dictates otherwise.

I'd say 5 or 6 minimum. You have to get better players along the DL, as well as depth, plus a FS would be nice.

I agree. Although I can live with Wilcox and do think he's learning the position. But, I don't know how long we can let him learn given how critical the safety positions are in today's game.

I would say we are 3 players away.

DT - Need somebody to work side-by-side with Crawford who is really excellent.

DE - Depends on how good Lawrence is when he comes back. We still need somebody from the strongside that can get upfield enough to punish teams if they double the interior or double the weakside.

FS/CB - Depends on Wilcox's progress. We need somebody that can get behind the receiver to intercept wayward passes and Wilcox is too suspect at making the tackle when the LB's are out of the play. I think FS is a higher priority than corner, but we will likely get rid of Carr and Carr is better than Moore.

think about this. there are very good odds that both our starting cb's from this season will be gone next year. scandrick is good but we will desperately need another cb next year. i assume the op was about next year since you have few option to do anything this year. of all the holes we will have cb scares me the worst.

I believe in the scheme we play that corners are easier to find You're basically looking for corners that can play zone which is more about technique and being able to tackle rather than pure flat-out ability. That's why man-to-man corners get the big bucks...they have far more athletic ability and the reward is that you can have them follow a great receiver and shut them down.

I definitely think corner is a concern, but I think thru FA and the draft we can find some good zone corners at a decent price. And I wouldn't be surprised if Patmon steps up to be serviceable enough. My main concern with the corners right now is that Carr is likely all but gone after this season due to the cap and Moore is not as good as Carr at this time. And I'm not sure we can draft a CB that will be as good as Carr is at zone. I'm not a huge Carr fan and he's not playing to his contract, but he's good enough that if he's gone that is an important hole to fill.

Well since we are so close and D is easier to add in free agency, I would expect a FA to be added on D.

I believe we are around 4 spots away on D. I trust in our ability to find DL late in the draft, we have done it for several years, look up the names, they are there such as Bowen, Hatch, JRat, now Crawford and such. This team really doesn't need to waste, yes I said waste, a high pick on an interior DL. A DE, perhaps we should, but we have shown the ability to find the inside guys.

Top 3 picks, I would look for a DE (premium position), CB (still a premium position), and safety. Either way, we need just one good free agent and after that we need to go with BPA.

I don't think many, secondary I feel has played pretty well considering the pass rush has been limited. I think just as it starts up front on the offense the main fix is the men up front on DL especially DE

I've always been all about getting a ballhawk FS...but I'm starting to think that a player like that just doesn't really exist anymore?

Who in the league would even qualify for that? Earl Thomas? Jairus Byrd?

Honestly the answer really depends on how people develop and perform.

If Lawrence delivers then we only need to add a guy opposite of him.

If Brent and McClain can deliver inside and Crawford and Melton/Okoye can deliver inside, then we're all set there.

If we can re-sign all of our linebackers, the whole crew is up for free agency outside of Lee, we're all set there.

We need to draft a cornerback to replace Carr.

We need to draft a safety to replace Wilcox if he doesn't evolve there, but he still needs to be given time. We're probably looking at the 4th year for him.

So potentially we're only 2 players away.

With how well all are playing this year. Steven will be pressed to resign everyone so there may be some holes we need to fill.
Other than what we are saying here.

Still could use a true FS as well

I think we still need a FS....

If you have been following....Since week #1 the Cowboys have basically switched Wilcox to SS and Church to FS. I'm not sold on Church as a pure cover FS.

Plus Jeff Heath can always be replaced.

Yes and yes.
I think the throw bodies approach on the Defensive Line will work especially with Lawrence, Okoye, and possibly Brent coming. We seem okay at LB.

A nickel CB or a true FS would be a smart move by this front office.

We have three potentially good d-linemen that have yet to play this year. I am thinking a one DT/DE and a CB.

I'd say this current defense is two linemen and two defensive backs away from being pretty good. The linebackers have been a pleasant surprise so far in the absence of Sean Lee.
