Now that Allen Hurns is off the team, how many WRs will we keep on the 53 roster ?
who benefits the most from Hurns departure ?

Me, I'm predicting SIX wide outs and the final WR unit to be like this :

WR (6)

1 cooper

2 gallup

3 cobb

4 wilson

5 JV Johnson

6) Austin

I think Austin is going to be a casualty. Maybe they keep him for special teams

Depends on how they view Pollard. I expect them to line him up at WR to see if he can qualify as that 6th WR and 2nd or 3rd RB and get a twofer out of that pick and allow for another position of depth like the DL or OL.

 What about Brown?

Noah is THE one I'm not that sure about him making the team.
and I hope his very recent injury watch that it is already being reported that he could be on the PUP list entering camp, that's already not
a good sign for Noah who is not in a position to miss reps and chances to develop and display his presence.

He missed all of camp summer with an hamstring injury that wiped out any development time as a WR. But I can see why they like him.
For a big WR, Noah really does have some nifty quick feet, and he's capable of breaking tackles of DBs trying to corrall him.

it's looking like Kellen M. may want to see more speed at this unit and that's not Brown's game.
and Noah is really more of an underneath guy (or that's what they really have used him for thus far) and he really needs to show much more than
blocking and catching 8-9 yard passes.

I expect Pollard to swing out to a WR to take advantage of a certain package at certain spots., but when the injuries hit (see Cobb) you need your WR depth guys to sub and fill in even more so at the WR spot, in maybe a full time capacity while that injured WR is out.
if Randall Cobb is out 2-3 games, Pollard is not going to be that full time slot guy while he still handles brief relief spots as a backup and gimmick plays.
That's why those young WR guys earn their roster spots to help improve the depth situation.

i'v been back and forth with Tavon Austin as I don't trust his durability and he has average hands as a receiver/punt returner, imo.
but if you saw a glimpse of the Seattle playoff game where he was huge in busting punt return plays wide open (one TD negated) and remember the huge kickoff run back
vs Cowboys in '17, and I still think they like him as a return, spot WR and gimmick guy to add to the roster.
and he's more experienced as a punt returner than Pollard is at the early stage. (pollard only 2 career punt returns)
Plus the emphasis still seems big on having even more speedy, big play guys.

Agree but every year we hear about young fast WRs with tons of potential but by the time final cuts are made it's come back to receivers Dak/QB trust. That's usually the vet with experience. Just me, but right now I see Brown the 4th WR behind Cobbs. He's a damn good possession receiver with excellent blocking skills. He could come off PUP anytime and he has what 2-3 years experience with Dak? If we keep six WRs that means THREE of the younger inexperience guys leapfrogged him to make the team. Not sure that going to happen at all.........

We have to remember with the young guys it not just about their talent but learning/knowing the game on the NFL level and gaining your QB trust/confidence.

Yep. I'll take Austin in a foot race against the field.

And that TD early in the season against the Giants showed a quick-strike, downfield passing game that's been sorely lacking.

I've advocated for having more speed elements at receiver for years and I am in no hurry to chase away one of the few we have.

You want to open up a defense? Make them worry about covering the entire field. Speed does that.

Does 9 receptions over two years qualify Brown as "damn good" to you?

Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Austin for sure. If not Austin, then Brown, but to me Austin offers much more, with his return skills and speed.
No way they both are gone and they keep 2 to 3 rookie WR's as depth. Unless they keep 7.

Do not forget about Devin Smith, if he overcomes his injuries, he has speed like Johnson, Austin, Guyton.

I will go with the top 3 plus Austin and Brown and either Smith, Wilson or Johnson.
Then I will re-evaluate once the pads come on, and a few PS games.

My guess is 5, just because we will need to go long to keep talent elsewhere.

Austin, Brown, Wilson and the undrafteds will have to fight for 2 spots. Brown probably has a leg up on one as the top blocking WR on the team but he's hardly guaranteed at this point.

Last I check, more to playing WR than receptions. Perhaps I am hedging a bit but to say at least TWO inexperience guys currently on the teams are better is reaching IMO.

6 or 7, but too early to say now, before they have even taken snaps in TC.

I can see the team going with 2 QB's and 3 TE's.
Potentially opening up a few spots for some receivers if they impress over the next month.

Cooper
Gallup
Cobb
Wilson
JV Johnson
Austin
Brown

5 or 6 will make the 53 man roster. I can't say exactly who that will be by the time this offseason concludes but going into camp I think it looks like this...

1) Amari Cooper

2) Michael Gallup

3) Randall Cobb

4) Cedrick Wilson

5) Noah Brown

6) Tavon Austin

Reggie Davis, Jaylon Guyton, Jon'Vea Johnson, Lance Lenior Jr, Devan Smith... these guys are going to have to have a great preseason if they are going to take someone else's job. Right now their isn't room for the guys I did not list. The Cowboys won't keep 7.

Then you need to check again. Start with the name.

This isn't about the other guys, it's about your description of a guy with 9 receptions over two years as "a damn good receiver".
