If I'm outside of FG range on 4th down then I want to pin the other team by their goal line and allow my defense to make the big play than to risk a 4th down and end up giving the ball up with great field position.
I think there are times to be aggressive and times you are better served by being smart and putting the pressure on the other team to overcome poor field position.
That's where coaching comes into play. The coach has to decide the odds of success, and if it is worth it to try and surprise the other team.
If you surprise the other team and succeed, you not only keep the ball, but you do something to their confidence, their swagger.
Plus you take the crowd out of the game, ... OH ! wouldn't that have been a good thing to happen.
