How much of your expectations have changed?

So going into this season, I would be honest in saying I would have been very happy with the Cowboys just getting into the playoffs. Didn't really care if it was 6th seed or not.

So here we sit at 7-1 with the #1 seed as of today. Now I feel that my expectations have hit hyper drive and I think I would be disappointed in anything less than that elusive #1 seed. Don't get me wrong, I'll still take any seed they end up with, but I think I would feel let down to some degree if they are not the #1 seed at the end of the year.

This team really messes me up sometimes.

Anyone else feel this way?
I thought Division title then Romo got hurt. At that point, regardless of how Dak played in the preseason, my expectations was just try to go .500, or keep us in striking distance, until Romo gets back. IF possible. Now my expectations are bound and gagged and I refuse to let them loose. I am on a week by week ride.

Reminds me of when I was in school. If I made a 69.5 I was happy that I passed. If I made an 89, I was ticked that I didn't make an A.
That being said, I thought 10-6, I now think 13-3, with a Superbowl win.

Funny how that stuff works, huh? Assuming we get to go to the Super Bowl and lose, we'd all be expecting to get back there and win next year. (OK, It's just a passing thought, forum friends, don't shoot the messenger.) Anyhow, the Super Bowl doesn't seem quite so far fetched now. ;)

I said 8-8 before the year. So needless to say, I am surprised.

I'm trying to keep my emotions grounded, but it's getting tougher as the weeks go by.

I'm now looking for a 1st round bye and a spot in the NFC Championship game. I don't dare hope for more. Yet.
This for me.

So, we're in the Superbowl, down by three in the closing moments of the game, Dak see Romo on the sidelines and fake a cramp. Tony comes in and throws a long touchdown pass to win the game. Romo is named MVP and announces his retirement. Dak to the future.

Back in July I expected Romo would go down with injury in the first 5-7 games--that happened before I expected.

Without a serviceable quarterback I expected the boys to battle around .500. Maybe not reaching that.

So...very very surprised.

1977 Dallas Cowboys: 8
Only three teams in Cowboys history have finished with two losses, but the 1977 squad holds the distinction of owning the best winning streak in franchise history. The eventual Super Bowl winners won their first eight, lost two in a row, and never lost again as Roger Staubach and rookie Tony Dorsett paced a unit that led the NFL in scoring, while Harvey Martin (79) and Randy White (54) led a defense that had the fewest total yards allowed.

The big difference is it was not as big of a shock given the fact Cowboys were a consistently contending for Championships during the 70’s

A win this week vs Pitt and this team will have at least tied the franchise record.

I think it is safe to say that the team has exceeded everybody's expectations this year. I did not go back and look at the prediction thread, but I would bet that nobody predicted 7-1 with Romo not taking a single snap.

I am just enjoying the season and taking it a game at a time. We have won 2 playoff games in the past 20 seasons (2009 against Philly and 2014 against Detroit) if I remember correctly, so just winning a single playoff game this year would be monumental considering our 20 year streak of mediocracy.

Not going to get my hopes up for anything greater than a single playoff win

LOL -- I like that ending, although if that happened, I can almost see Jerry signing Tony to another 100 mil contract for the next 5 years. (I kid)

Thought 8-8, 9-7 with Romo didn't trust defense. Once he went down thought 6 wins, if that. Now it's all gravy for me, im just excited about the new energy and future with these young guns.

I thought they would go 8-8. They have exceeded my wildest dreams. I'm enjoying this season as much as any I can remember. I hope the second half isn't a huge disappointment, but it is extremely difficult to keep churning out wins.

This is NOT an attempt to go Romo/Dak on you guys but don't you find it interesting that the expectations have changed all with Dak at QB? So question... are your expectations the same, neutral or different in regards to who finishes the season at QB? I think this directly relates to the OP's question.

That's a practical expectation -- that way anything more than that would surely be frosting on the cake. I'd be disappointed at first if we didn't go farther than that but in retrospect, I'd likely come to my senses and salve that wound knowing we were fortunate in getting that far to begin with.

Right but certainly you didn't expect us to be at 7-1 in late August after Romo's injury. So from this point forward, does who finishes at QB effect your expectations?

I still believe that Romo gets one more shot under center to try to make it to the big dance.

For all that he has done of this franchise, you don't let his career end getting drilled in a preseason game, he deserves better.

no.I thought we were headed for disaster the moment Romo got hurt.I wanted Dak to the starter even before Moore got hurt because Moore is a JAG and i wanted to give Dak all the time in the first season to develop.

And its not like we went out and got Manning to make a year or two run at a ring (see Denver), we are doing it with rookies!!!!!

That is what is so awesome.
