Sturm has done some breakdowns where he looks at performance by Romo by pass attempts. There is a pretty significant dropoff even if I don't remember the number. I want to say it's around 30.
Anyway, a running game where you can get a good YPC and more importantly first downs, takes the load off of Romo. He is a better QB when he doesn't have to throw the ball 40+ times.
Then of course is all of the tactical stuff. It opens up play action, brings a safety down etc. It also helps you score in the end zone and close out games. The opponent cannot come back in the fourth quarter when you are getting 4 YPC over 8 minute drives to end the game. The Saints game last year and the Patriots game the year before show how the lack of one hurts.
This is where I think it really helps. Fresh sets of downs.
Dallas was top 5 in passing 1st downs (70%, I believe) and like 25th in rushing first downs.
They were dead last in rushing yards on 1st and 10. Dead last in rushing plays over 10 yards.
They simply could not run the ball ever.
I'm pretty sure no team relied on their passing game as much as Dallas. As a percentage of total offense, I think Dallas was #1 in the passing department.
If Dallas could run the ball, he wouldn't have to pass nearly as much out of completely necessity and I think he wouldn't have to press nearly as much.
