Yes, any coach can leave a program at any given time. BUT, Bobby Petrino is not any coach. He's ALWAYS looking to leave. IMO, he should have at least finished the season with the Falcons.

To me here are the FACTS about Bobby Petrino: He's a quitter and a liar. If I'm a recruit, that's all I need to know about him. There's NO WAY I'd committ to him.

I agree, I think Petrino are all those things.

But at the end of the day, I view most College Coaches the same, always looking for the next great gig.

If I am kid that grew up in Arkansas and was always a Razorbacks fan, I don't think Petrino being the new Head Coach changes my opinion one way or another.

Heck, the guy was a fantastic college coach and may even make me look more favorably upon the institution.

The only thing I would be concerned with is what type of Offense and Defense he is going to run and what his personality is like (Disciplinarian, X's and O's guy).

I would not concern myself with him leaving, I just wouldnt care as you run that risk at just about any program in the U.S.

Of course, I am a person that is automatically distrustful of people I didn't grow up with and who are not in my family.

This is a business and I would tell my son that as well.

What a mess. How Petrino has any creditability left is beyond me.
Yup, I agree. Didn't even have decency to address the team about his resignation.

How can Arkansas be happy about hiring a coach with lack of decency and commitment?

Gee, I wonder if McFadden will stay at Arkansas for his senior year just to play for Petrino? Is Felix Jones also a junior? If so, I bet he turns pro, too. How can this guy Petrino even try to recruit high school players? Petrino is an abject failure and a liar to boot. No one will trust that guy.

Blank and the agent for Petrino are telling totally different stories. Notice, Blank speaks very little about the agent. I have a feeling the agent is telling the truth. Blank, for an owner of Home Depot and the Falcons, needs to get a clue. YOU are supposed to be in charge and know what is going on. CEOs get fired for doing things like that. The buck is supposed to stop with Blank.

This just goes to show you what a great!!! owner the Cowboys have in Jerry Jones.

Maybe by calling Blank directly, Jerry thought he was staying out of the clandestine phone calls and smoke filled rooms.

Sounds to me he was trying to be above board with a fellow owner so as not to be accused of hiding something.

Who knows the real story, just throwing out a different angle.

I agree with this. Jerry took the high road and called Blank (and then McKay as instructed by Blank) on behalf of his Alma Mater. There is nothing underhanded about it.

WOW! Bobby Petrino is nothing but a jerk. There's no way I'd committ to going to Arkansas if I were a recruit. How could you trust the guy? If I was a Falcon employee, I'd be sure to say that in every press conference or media quote I could. Arkansas may be making a mistake by hiring him.
I just don't like liars. I could forgive Petrino for deciding he made a mistake leaving the college ranks and for going back. I can even understand the timing since he has to be there for recruiting and because he would be a lame duck coach for the Falcons if he stayed anyway. How effective could he be at that point?

But if Blank is telling the truth that Petrino told him he was staying even after the negotiation meeting with Arkansas then it says a lot about Petrino's character. Or lack thereof. At the point he knew he was going to leave he should have had the decency to call Blank and tell him.

Never dreamed I'd be citing this guy, but Tony Casillas in rare candor stated last night in an interview that he believed, "all coaches are liars..."

That sums it up pretty well. There does appear to be little honor, integrity,or allegiance (which is ironic if you think about it) in the coaching racket. Particularly at the collegiate level.

There's some truth to that, IMO.

Their occupation is so ultra competitive that they are always looking for an edge, whether in recruiting or pumping other people for information. There's a lot of covert activity in this occupation and a lot of talking, persuading and spinning (especially on the collegiate level). I've yet to meet a college football coach that I trust completely.

It's the closest thing there is to politics.

Isn't that what Parcells did, even though it was not during the season?

Exactly what happened. Nothing at all wrong with what Jerry did.
Petrino, too, has every right to resign his job and get a new one. It sucks the way he did it, but he was probably genuinely conflicted and it was a big contract to walk away from. He sure did make Blank look like an idiot on MNF, though.

**Sigh**

Why is Jerry Jones even making phone calls like this?

I agree. Jerry Jones should not be involved in stealing head coaches.

Karma has a long memory ... and some NFL owner is going to meddle in the affairs of some half azzed college program and steal our HC two days before the Super Bowl.

Football is an emotional game. When Romo did a Lucy, I knew it was so heartbreaking that Parcells would resign. I don't fault him for that. It's like when Jimmy got embarrassed with that blowout game in Miami. Also, do note that parcells hung around valley ranch longer than usual after he resigned. Considering that he is reportedly interested in coming back to football, he might have just been rash and now finds it a mistake.

What up there makes it sound like Jerry was involved in stealing a head coach? The university Jerry has ties to asked him to speak to his friend. Jerry might feel bad about how things went down afterwards since he has a friend involved. He might feel used.

Yep. And to be somewhat balanced, the schools sometimes demonstrate impatience and unrealistic expectations and cut their coaches loose as a result, frequently regardless of contract status.

So it could be argued that coaches really cannot afford to rely upon all those virtuous traits in their chosen career, lest they get axed (I don't mean questioned) as they dutifully carry out their responsibilities honorably, without regard to fulfilling those sometimes dubious goals set forth by the ADs. And the idea of unrealistic expectations is exemplified here in the case of Arkansas football.

I'm actually a huge Razorback fan but they ain't Florida/LSU/Georgia/Auburn. They will not compete yr in and yr out with them for a title. Their boosters and fans need to come to terms with this...that's another thread!

Wow, this Petrino guy is a dirt bag. What a scum. If I were Jerry Jones, I'd want no part of him coaching my alum.

Reader's Digest version.

Broyles asks Jerry Jones to see if Petrino is available.

Blank and McKay say no. Jerry Jones now out of the loop.

Lots of meetings with Petrino to "work things out."

Petrino assures Blank and Mckay he's staying.

MNF, Falcons lose. More discord with his players.

After the game much tears in the Petrino household.

Petrino calls Long from Arkansas directly, and in less than 24 hours is gone from Atlanta headed to Arkansas.

If Blank has any anger at Jerry it is misguided IMO.

Petrino was going to leave anyway, Jones had nothing to do with petrino leaving, or wanting to leave...

I certainly would have prefered that he kept his nose out of it

Why? Blank and Jones are tight.

Saying that tho. I would never want anything to do w/ Patrino. I watched Charles Davis dress down Patrino the other night. He said this guy loves to be courted. When you cannot have faith in your coach to finish then you should never allow that person any control on a team whatsoever.
