How Roy WILL help the team

(merge if necessary, didn't see this anywhere)

Lots of critics to the deal say that New Roy doesn't help the team's problems on D or establishing the run with Brad Johnson under center.

New Roy is here to free up TO and give defenses something to think about in the so-called 1-2 formation, 1 RB and 2 TEs, with 2 WRs. Witten and Bennett, New Roy and TO, with Barber in the backfield.

Seven blockers on the line of scrimmage in front of the Barbarian. NR wide right, TO in the right slot.

Can you put 8 men in the box and trust three over the top to cover TO and NR? Do you give TO a free release to run a slant? Double him and leave NR one-on-one deep?

What if Witten releases into the pattern?

So you put four DBs in zone. Now you've got 7 defenders to stop MBIII who has seven blockers. Not good.

A truly dominant offense can control the game.

Give Dallas a 10 point lead in the second quarter, having run all over the opponent's defense. Are they going to stick with the run long? Nope. One dimensional offenses are much easier to control, even with our D.

On paper, this acquisition is magnificent.

Let's see how it works in reality.

We won't fully see it in action until we are at that dump known as FedEx Field more than likely.

This is the key right there. This whole team looks magnificent on paper.

I think it would be foolish to try to make a claim that Roy Williams does not help this team.

My argument was that I felt we didn't need him and I still don't.

Crayton working the slot again will be huge.'

He clearly was not a receiver who could play on the outside. He is one of the best slot receivers in the game though.

I see him more as a replacement for Owens in a few years.

This second receiver bit is just icing on the cake till that time comes.

2010 we draft the Speed guy that will compliment.

I think that some perceive Roy Williams coming in as Terrell Owens version 2.0. The thing is that he isn't and doesn't have to be.

Roy is a possession receiver. A receiver with good enough hands to move the chains and keep drives going. Used properly, he's going to help this offense eat up tons of clock, get the ball into the endzone (probably thrown more to Witten and Owens, both of whom will receive more one-on-one matchups) after long drives, and turn the ball back over to the other team's offense who will be faced with a very fresh defense for four quarters.

T.O.P. Time of possession. More is better for your team.

I agree with this point and the one about it allowing Crayton to move back to the slot, where he excels.

Roy's a big receiver that's capable of making the big play down the field, but he's not some speedster coming in to stretch defenses. And I don't think he has to be. But you would think he's a guy that should, with his talent, be able to maximize on the coverages he'll see here.

I don't know how any of this will work out, but it's going to be fun, at some point, to see Romo, Owens, Witten, Barber, Williams and Jones running this show.

Yes, at work today that angle was discussed at length.

That is the only way I see someone making a case that we "needed him".

Yea this reminds me of a Madden franchise mode move! I still see teams blitzing and pressing Owens. The only difference is Hurd n the boys can't make teams pay, can RW?

Patrick Crayton has 2 TDs in the last 2 weeks.

Miles Austin has been fantastic. He has gotten open several times, including last week where he was open, the ball goes through his hands for an easy TD but Crayton catches. Against the Cardinals, I got wide open for an easy TD but Tony Romo got hit and threw an errant pass.

So imo, Miles Austin was starting to come into his own.

I see Miles as more of a developing outside receiver. Can he work the slot? For the short term at least, I think Crayton will be the third guy. He's been great from there throughout his career, including this season.

I think we have a bona fide backup developing for Owens/Williams in Austin, and a kid that could potentially develop into even more.

Our shiny new toy won't make bit of difference unless this gets fixed.

I think that this will free up TO and make life gravy for Witten. If we can not protect the QB its not gonna matter. The O line still needs to focus and get some things worked out.

IDK if we don't need him but in two years he will be our #1 WR and we know what we are getting with him he gives us move options as to where to go in the draft and will have instant impact on this team.

Jeebus has every body totally forgot about Miles Austin ? That really fast guy who by the way is starting to really figure out what to do with all that speed? All I know is that when Owens does hang up his cleats, I feel good about how much easier that transition can be after today. Is it next year ? 2 more years ? 3 more years? One superbowl? 2 superbowls? Who knows? T.O wants a superbowl ring more than we can even imagine. He sits at #2 all time behind his mentor Jerry Rice and is comfortable with that it seems, but he knows the ring erases all the doubt from all his detractors. They will never be able to say, yeah but.....

Damn bb. who was the awesome o'lineman that our stupid owner passed up before the trade deadline ? God I can't believe Jerry would pass up trading for an excellent o'lineman and take an excellent receiver that just happened to be there instead. Just how many excellent players were traded today, I forget. Man just 3 weeks ago our broken o'line didn't need fixed. Guess that just shows ya' fix 'em before you need to, then you won't need to. This runnin' a football team thingy sure is easy. I don't see all the fuss.

No one's forgetting about Austin. He's an important piece of the puzzle. But he's not a Pro Bowl WR. We now field two, with a great #3 and a developing #4 who has shown he can make big plays.

Imagine 4 WR sets with Witten, MBIII or Felix.

This means nothing if we can't protect the QB, but Jerry just doubled-down on Tony Romo and Jason Garrett. Don't bet against him.
