How soon will Hatcher contribute in the season? Will he be a major sacking impact?

Im so excited about having this player on our team. Just looking at his clips it's like he's a monster. He's the type of person that has Big-School talent but plays for a smaller school.

Just imagine J. Hatcher on a team like Texas, Oaklahoma, or USC, he probably would have been an early first round.

Why?

-With better coaching he could be a dominant force in the NFL.
F.Y.I.> That's what he's going to get in Dallas, better coaching, learn more pass-rushing moves from an original Cowboy pass-rusher Greg Ellis and the coaching staff, and he's going to get more knowledge which means more awareness of the game so, he can get a good preception on how to flow with the speed of the game.

-In a bigger atmosphere his talent could really blossum.
F.Y.I.> He's already an intense player, he's much mature than other rookies that comes in, he's very hungry, and I believe BP (Bill Parcells) knows what to teach him to enhance his talents.

All Amount To> If he could show his talent in early preason I blieve that Cowboys will get rid of Kenyon Coleman probably for a draft choice but, if Hatcher just show he could play on a good level as (adaquete) skills, I believe the Cowboys will keep Kenyon Coleman.

My Thoughts: I think that Hatcher will get least expected stats.

PREDICTIONS: 64 Tackles; 4.5 Sacks; 2 interceptions; 24 TFL; 4 FF; 2 FR ; 12 Pass Deflections

He has a lot of raw ability and is a natural fit in our Defense. I doubt that he will have a huge impact this year due to his lack of experience but give him a year to learn and to get stronger in the offseason program and he will be a beast IMO. Anything we get out of him this year (and I do expect to see him make some plays) will be a bonus but in 2007...look out! He will be challenging someone for a starting job.

This guy is the definition of a "project". He won't contribute that much this year.

Yeah, I watched it right after she put it up. He'll contribute, but he won't contribute. There's just too many "for sure" guys ahead of him.

you don't know what he's going to do in preseason to show he want some attention...

Like I said, there's just too many guys ahead of him. They're not looking for him to contribute this year. He's for depth/project. Ellis won't be here much longer and they know that.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I really like the guy. You can't go wrong with big, fast, agile guys.

He's powerful. I just feel he's going to be like Chris Canty or better his first year. Players like that turns on once the get coaching.

He'll be a solid special teamer this year, but barring any major injuries on the D-line, I just don't see him playing more than a handful of plays per game... if that.

A few years down the road, we could be talking about a solid sack guy... just not seeing it this season.

I admire your optimism, and I had Hatcher high on my list before the draft, but those numbers are HIGHLY unlikely... he won't get enough playing time to rack up 64 tackles, no Cowboys lineman had as many as 40 tackles last year, and Hatcher's best hope is to be a backup to Canty and Spears and Ellis...

12 passes defense is equally unrealistic, when Greg Ellis lead Cowboys' defensive linemen with 6 last year... 24 tackles for loss would put him among the league leaders, if not leading the league... it's highly unusual for a defensive lineman to have 2 ints in a year, though I do remember Greg Ellis accomplishing that feat a few years back...

If I were to project some more reasonable stats for him, I'd be thrilled with 30 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 passes defensed, 1 interception... that would be a GREAT rookie year...

If you think he's gonna be another Chris Canty, then your projections really are out of whack-- Canty had 35 tackles last year, 0 interceptions, 0 passes defensed, 2.5 sacks...

Completely unrealistic stats for him to get this year. We are much to loaded for him to get the playing time needed to even get half the amount predicted. I loved this pick and think he will be really good for a long time. But he simply can't make that big of an impact his rookie year.

Kenyon Coleman is as good as gone. There just isn't a spot available for him anymore.

And I agree that with the rotation the defense uses, he won't have those high numbers. His biggest contribution may be in nickel pass rush situations.

He'll be involved in the defensive line rotation. That's as much as I'm expecting, which will still mean he contributes.

I think he's here because as the season progresses, he'll get better and we'll need linemen to keep our defensive front seven fresh.

One of the things that happens near the end of the season and during the playoffs is that teams tend to run more, wearing your defense down. Or they tend to emphasis the pass to get up on a team and then wear them down running.

You need fresh defensive legs to keep up with that pace. And one way to do that is to rotate your defensive unit throughout the year. That allows them not to take as many snaps and preserve them for the long haul and to confuse the offense with different run defending and pass defending styles.

Hatcher will be used like Spears and Canty were used this season. He'll probably have about five plays a game at the beginning of the year (assuming he signs on time and doesn't get injured in preseason) and then his contribution will increase as he becomes more accustomed to the 3-4 and learns more about technique.

I expect him to make one sack in spot duty.

lol, no way does he get 64 tackles as a DE. i would be very happy with 4.5 sacks as a nickel/dime pass rusher but these numbers your talking about a pro-bowl OLB, no way does it happen. I like the optimism but dang man. He'll be lucky to get on the field for 100 plays this season...those numbers are not realistic at all.

Well, that "somebody" will have to be Canty or Spears. Since Canty had the best rookie season, but lessor pedigree, and Spears had a slow rookie season and a better pedigree, I doubt either will be losing their jobs, although both will be pushed. Hatcher has a lot of learning to do.

He's obviously not going to win a starting position in the 3-4 over the next several years unless there's an injury. He may win one next year or the year after in the nickel/4-3 sets.
