How soon will Hatcher contribute in the season? Will he be a major sacking impact?

OBVIOUSLY- oooopppppssss. One should never stick your neck out that far- someone is always lurking with the big AX.
I'll keep my neck out there on this one. Then again, I don't have a history of being shy on the predictions/claims on this site. :)

I'll be thrilled if he contributes at all in our DE rotation this year...that would be great, but it's foolish to mention sack numbers for DE's in the 3-4.

The guy I look to be a beast this year is Marcus Spears, but even there, 3-4 DE's are not likely to ever get you double digit sacks...that's the job of the OLB.

Here's a more realistic prediction;

Hatcher will be active for 3-4 games this upcoming season, seeing limited action in those games.

A 3rd round pick only being active for 3-4 games? Wow, we must have an incredible team.

If you think he's gonna be another Chris Canty, then your projections really are out of whack-- Canty had 35 tackles last year, 0 interceptions, 0 passes defensed, 2.5 sacks...

Did Chris Canty lead the Defensive line in tackles?:starspin

Does Peterman ring a bell? Remember, Hatcher is considered a project from a small school, who needs to be brought up to speed with the big boys. So my prediction is more likely than him being the second coming of Reggie White in his rookie season.

The reason Peterman was inactive for so many games had nothing to do with the fact he was a 3rd round pick.

Have all of you forgotten about Jay Ratliff??? He was the 7th round pick DE from Auburn and he was tearing Seattle a new one when he got his chance to shine, and IMO was the sole reason that Seattle's offense was frustrated the whole game until the very end. I remember Parcells actually started him that game and he took full advantage of it. Hatcher will surely be behind him in that rotation, unless he just becomes an unblockable monster in the pros.
I don't remember when Ratliff got his high ankle sprain, but don't forget about him... ALSO IMO... the defensive line was just not the same the rest of the season because they really missed his non-stop motor.

Don't get me wrong... I hope Hatcher shines bright and has a terrific TC, but all that says now is that we will have one HELLUVA DL rotation... Maybe the strongest in the league IMO. I'm watching the divx video of Hatcher and he looks super... He is unblockable once he gets his angle and he can run plays down with ease... he also has great agility and is fast enough to avoid getting cut at the legs.

Peterman tore his ACL and MCL in preseason. I'm with you on the low expectations, but Ratliff, a 7th rounder, saw at least that much activity. Hey, if we're THAT good of a team, great, but I'd expect him to be active more than 3-4 games.

We always want instant results, and sometimes we get them. It took Aikman a few years, Irvin a few years, Emmitt atleast 1 year, Bradie James 3 years. Point is, it's okay if the guy and some of our other players has a couple of 3 years behind them to get the job done.

It doesn't mean we can't make it to the bowl, but if Hatcher blows our front line away during pre-season, then maybe he is the steal of the draft. If he doesn't, it's okay - He has time.

My point being that he will likely not be getting those stats in the first post of this thread. He will be at the tail end of a very deep rotation. Last year's rotation wasn't as deep as this one, and it still took Ratliff and Pepper a long time before they were active for any games.

I understand that. Read my posts on the thread. I agree with you.

My Thoughts: I think that Hatcher will get least expected stats.

PREDICTIONS: 64 Tackles; 4.5 Sacks; 2 interceptions; 24 TFL; 4 FF; 2 FR ; 12 Pass Deflections

:starspin

YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THIS YEAR, THIS DUDE, THESE KIND OF STATS?!?!?
I'm not sure how Hatcher is going to get enough reps to get those kind of stats, even if he beats out Coleman. Even if he beats out Coleman, he'll still just be the #4 or #5 DE on the roster. No way he beats out Ellis, Spears or Canty and Ratliff is no pushover either.
FYI, Spears only got 1.5 sacks, 19 tackles, and 1 pass Def last season. This defense is too loaded and deep for Hatcher to get many stats unless he somehow becomes the best player on defense in his rookie year.

Or maybe, just maybe, we took a 2nd day prospect in the 3rd round...

It's one of the reasons I didn't like the Hatcher selection. Between Ratliff, Spears, and Canty, we already have three young 2nd year players that are expected to be starting caliber.

The key word you are missing: rotation.
