I’m not knocking the Cowboys for being 9-3. They have proven to be better than I thought they were after that colossal egg we laid on opening night. But as we saw last January, the playoffs require a different gear. And if we want to change the story of the last 27 years, these guys need to get even tougher and more committed. And they can- hopefully they will.

and when we get to the playoffs they can up the gear. I mean maybe fans don't realize its possible and not making excuses that Coaches devise more vanilla gameplans against lessor opponents and not bring out the bottom of the playbook creative plays they will use say against a team like MN or of one you will need to and not show many of those plays..

they figured they could roll in and beta them with a bunch of wrinkles. Man on man we are better and it was close and we won..

Im Just saying we have seen Moore bring in more wrinkles against the the better teams what we are 4-1 or 5-1 against playoff eligible teams this year?

we led from the 2nd qtr. what 14-10 and never game up the lead, until the final whistle, so it was close.it happens.

I think the coaches are failing to get them focused at the start of games....and part of that might be Jerry's culture. I also think that Kellen Moore often calls a terrible first couple of series that are very predictable.
If they can't establish a rhythm we'll be one and done.

Well said, Bob, and I 100% agree.

It's the early playcalling that is atrocious. After watching film on the opponent all week, the Cowboys still come out and do a very predictable run on 1st down, then a very predictable PA pass or run on 2nd down, and then a very predictable play on 3rd down. There's no creativity, no initial plan to exploit the other team's weakness, just vanilla playcalling that most defenses shut down because THEY KNOW IT'S COMING.

So I fault Kellen Moore for not getting more creative in the 1st quarter, especially on the first drive. This dates back to Garrett, so many slow starts.

And yes, still too many penalties, and still have a hard time slowing down the run, especially in a close game when they can't just rush the passer every play.

This team just lacks urgency. And I have to fault the coaching staff AND Dak.

This just doesn't look like a team that can win a playoff game on the road, not starting every game like this...and then thinking they can "turn it on" later. Nope. Against a good team in the playoffs, they'll just stumble along all game, and then they'll get anxious and start committing penalties, and then the sky will fall once they can't stop the run. Many of us see it coming, because we've seen it time and time again. This team "feels" no different.
this was the colts in 1 of 17 NOT a playoff game, um ok we started the bears game 28-7 MN game Huge , some games happen are the regales worried about how they started against the same colts?? Texans game you see that HT score against the eagles? i mean are we nitpicking each Eagles first half or 2nd half..

its week-to-week league JUST STOP.

I thought a wins a win and this one was 54-19? yet fans still not happy worried about game that not happening for month? weve sen the best team in the league have games worse then this BIlls and Eagles come to mind..

Last night’s win was a perfect example of why teams play 60 minutes to decide the outcome. Going into the 4th qtr, the score was 21-19, and the Cowboys had played 45 minutes of inconsistent football. The bottom fell out for the colts in the 4th with the turnovers.

But a win is a win, and the Cowboys certainly took advantage of the opportunities they had. Kudos to the Cowboys for having the killer instinct late.

As I look at the Cowboys with 5 regular season games left, here are the things I believe this team needs to show some improvement to go into the playoffs strong:
  • Starting games with better offensive execution. This team has a bad habit of starting games poorly on offense. Against the colts, we started with a 3 and out. Two weeks ago against the giants, our first two possessions were punt, turnover. Against GB, we started with a punt on first two possessions. Viking game was the exception. In the playoffs, coming out flat offensively can be deadly as we learned last yr vs niners.
  • Stopping the run. We’ve been vulnerable against the run all this year as well as last year. Our pass rush is top shelf but teams that can run the ball against us are still a problem. It has improved somewhat the last two weeks, but that has been against the giants and colts, not the eagles or niners. I’m still not convinced we have it figured out yet.
  • Reducing penalties. As we saw last year in our lone playoff game, sloppy play kills you in the playoffs. Through 12 games, we are currently the second most penalized team in the NFL behind the 3-9 broncos, with 86 penalties, averaging over 7 penalties per game. Compare that to KC who has 52 penalties through 12 games. We were better against the colts but we still are committing stupid penalties right and left.
  • Having a chip on their shoulders. I wish this team had a bigger chip- a killer instinct that says, “We’re going to smash you in the mouth for 60 minutes.” This team still sleep walks at times and to me too often take whole possessions off on both sides of the ball. If you want to win in the playoffs, you have to want it more than your opponent.

This is just wrong Bob. First off, most games in the NFL are much more competitive in the first half than they are in the second. Defenses and offenses have been game planning all week. It’s much more difficult for the skill positions to come out in the first quarter and be on top of their game. Players are fresh on both sides so they play a lot tougher. As the game progresses, the cream rises to the top. Coordinators counter what the other is doing by making adjustments. The run game tires out the defense. The pass rush takes its toll on the QB.

The Cowboys limited the best RB in the league to 82 yards. Not great but decent and have been doing much better of late.

Cowboys only had 3 penalties against the Colts. Need to sustain that.

This team does have a chip on its shoulder. It’s Micah Parsons. Did you see how they put their foots on the Colts throats last night scoring a 50 brisket? They refuse to give up when behind. They’ve done that all season long.

For whatever reason, fans expect perfection. They’ll allow other teams and players not to be perfect, but when it comes to the Cowboys they expect perfection on every single play. And when it inevitably don’t get what they want, they lash out and trash some of the best players in the league. They’re unable to see the big picture. They don’t, or won’t, understand that it’s also a chess match between the coordinators. Teams make adjustments. It’s a 60 minute game not a 30 minute game. This team is not perfect as no team is. I agree with your middle 2 points but do not think it’s as much an issue as you do.

Agree COMPLETELY. We far too often start quite slow….and when the defense doesn’t stop the opposing drives and we get down 10-14, Dak sometimes played “rattled”…..happy feet, indecisive with reads, balls sailing and in the dirt (like last years playoff game, the Denver game last year, Tampa bay this year). Sometimes we are sloppy with penalties and other things that KILL drives. Last year we looked a little soft against San Fran. Even though they lost their QB I wouldn’t be suprised if their D stifle the hell out of our offense. It’s weird, we have the number one offense the past couple years but there are times we look inept.

Also, K Moore needs to stop with the quick outs and Zeke sweeps and stretch plays, those always lose yards. Stick with upfield stuff, we don’t really do misdirection well it seems like….

NO BUTTT! hey 5 games left in the RS guys just stop the nit picking of regular season Blowout that the mighty eagles had to make comeback to win 17-16 eagles also struggled against the Texans early( you remember that HT score).

Its a 60 min game many GW drives happen in the 4th you dont pay to win the first half i mean what the 4th qtr doesn't count now with fans , wany to nit pick first half's..lmao..

every game has its unique story unfold.. shizzle happens, stop looking ahead 6 weeks. jeez we won 54-19 nothing else matters we led 14-10 and never trailed after.. if Rush was playing and won 21-19 we would all be happy and say great win!

sp stop it at 14-10, 21-9 it was still a win.. other teams around the league don't get nitpicked qtr to qtr, final score is ALL that matters , this place is insufferable and why i dont visit during gameday or that evening.

Insufferable miserable fans with ridiculous narratives and expectations.. oooh only 54-19 but but look at the slow start LMAO!!!:muttley::huh::rolleyes:o_O:mad::popcorn::espn:

I disagree. If you are a team that is focused, executing at a high level and mentally tough, this team can beat anyone. I actually always want to play the best in the playoffs. If your team is really good, why not prove it against the best? Fear no one.
Individual matchups matter. Having Diggs follow a teams best receiver. Splitting Shultz or Pollard out wide. Putting Lamb in the slot. Lining Parsons up over their weakest tackle. Small things like that can make a big difference in a game.

AKA....coaching matters.

Dak has to be better, period. We are not going anywhere in the playoffs with the Dak we saw last night. 2nd worst game of the year by him and really had 6 poor qtrs out of his last 8

Blue you know who nit picked the Cowboys constantly? Jimmy Johnson and Tom Landry. Jimmy rode his team hard to make them the best they could be. Tom Landry always spent hours in the film room with players to get better.

As I stated in the OP, I was happy to get that win. We did close strong. But watching this team without the “fan glasses”, I think it honestly needs to get a lot better to be what we all want them to be- a team that wins playoff games.

How bout this:

1) Team needs to have zero penalties.... even 1 hurts the team

2) Dak must bbe more accurate. 75% completion isnt going to get it done in the playoffs.

3) Drops... the receivers can not drop sure passes. Perfect example was Schultz drop of a perfect pass from Dak in the Endzone last night.

4) Defense... we can not allow teams to score TDs. We allowed two Td passes last night. That simply will not get it done in the playoffs. The TD that Pierce scored on Joseph.... cmon Joseph, you need to be better in 1 on 1 coverage. He was at least 2 inches away from him... un acceptable.
5) Play calling must be better. We punted at least 3 times last night. If Moore were able to scheme people open more, it would make everyone's job easier. Lamb went into motion last night all night and was open on most of his routes, but Gallup never had seperation... get better moore.
6) Special teams. Turpin does nothing but call fair catch. We brought him here to score a TD a game on returns. The special teams coaches are doing a HORRIBLE job on getting the kid up to par on what needs to be done.

Ill work on some more of my thoughts for later.

We need to run from the start, this game (and the 49ers game to some extent), shows how defenses will tire in the fourth. Someone has to stop Moore calling passing plays.
huh???? Dak had 30 pass attempts and we had 34 rush attempts.
Having 20 passes and 44 rushes is not going to win you games deep in the playoffs. See Titans.

Come on man…that’s not what this post was about. I was pleased with win and stated so in the OP. But if we’re going to win some playoff games, we’re going to have to be better. If you disagree with that, it’s fine. Just want to make sure it’s understood I was not raining on a regular season win parade. I’m just wanting to win some playoff games for a change.

Good post. I think Moore needs to do a better job with the RBs. Specifically getting Zeke more touches in space. He shows no creativity there. It’s just ram Zeke into the line. Where are the screens? Pitches? Delayed draws? Moore is awful. First and goal from the 3 last night and he goes spread with open backfield. It’s just stupid. I also think DS is a fumble waiting to happen. Need to go away from him. 54 and 33 need to play more. I like what those guys are doing. Penalties and run defense are big fixes.

See the Titans in what respect?? You play the game that suits your game. The varied double Rush attack with an o-line that appears more comfortable run-blocking is the way forward. Dak can dink and dunk early and manage the run, then later when the defense gets tired (as we've kept them on the field) the gaps appear in the secondary.
We play the game that suits the team...not because it doesn't follow the league edict. Dak is a totally different QB when he's not forcing passes against a stacked secondary.

you are neither of those guys... no fans are.. im speaking of fan reactions..

sorry this place at time is insufferable, cant enjoy a 54-19 win for a minute!! lest finish the dang RS first!! than we can judge the playoff game..all games are week to week, you blindly watching the league have games like this weekly, like headscratchers, blowout one week , lose to lessor team the next IT HAPPENS!! lets judge a playing game when it actually happens. we are judging nit-picking a 54-19 win..

sorry..thats an insufferable miserable way to react to win like this..

not even a minute let alone a 24 hrs to actually enjoy being 9-3 you all react as if we are 3-9 and lost. we were a 4th qtr defensive let down against GB from being 6-0 since Daks been back.. you play each game that next up and as its a one off they do NOT connect this isn't stringing games together as if you can pay every team the same..

Isn’t it possible to enjoy a win and also point out how we can improve? Both things can be true. That was a great win last night. But I want us to be better. What’s so bad about that?

When teams stack a box like the Eagles did yesterday..... the Titans were done. They couldnt run, and their pass game, especially after Burks went down, was NON existent. It is pretty simple.... We can run, and we can throw. IMO, OBJ is going to get a deal from us. Jerry is too close and OBJ is the shiny piece that everyone around Jerry is saying we could use. So IF and it is a very bif if, if OBJ can help this year, we will be a very well balanced team, maybe the most balanced in the league. BUT, if you think running the ball 40 times a week is gonna work, I think you are still living in 1972..... no offense, lol

I agree weve been pretty balanced even the NYG game 38 runs 30 passes or something.. cant always run run run or pass pass pass. Only thing i nit pick is when Moores calling so many passes in row at odd times and then runs so many in a row.. sometimes its seems unplanned and out of whack..ie getting cute at the wrong times etc..

I do agree with your side here in this thread, fans expect perfections from the frist snap to the last and that insane expectations. all games are week to week and games eb and flow. We win 54-19 and fans are already talking how that won't get it down in the playoffs. what playoffs we played 1 0f 17 and have 5 more left.. the playoffs can be debated when we are set to pay those games, nit pick those games. when they happen,.

can we just enjoy win without tearing it apart as if it has anything to do with next week or month from now!! 9-3 enjoy that for now!!

Isn’t it possible to enjoy a win and also point out how we can improve? Both things can be true. That was a great win last night. But I want us to be better. What’s so bad about that?
because we cant even wait 24 hours before we start picking every part of the game apart. AND, you think the coaches dont do this? You think the coaches wont be back looking at tape today and trying to figure out ways to get better? Hell, I would do that myself with my softball teams and I wasnt even a pro coach.

We would win entire tournaments and allow 5 runs in 6 games and Id be on the couch pissed off that we gave up those 5 runs....... and scored 47. So if I was doing it, you know they are. It wasnt only Landry and Jimmy that always tried to get better.

But for me... Ill take a few days to enjoy this week. This place reminds me of 100 Pats from SNL.. you know, the debbie downer.
