Commander fan here. The reason our big spending ways didn't pay off in the past was due to coaching turnover. You can spend tons of money on players, but if they don't fit the current coach's scheme it doesn't matter. Sanders and Stubblefield didn't fit in with Schottenheimer's plans. Stephen Davis didn't fit Spurrier's. Coles, Trotter and Arrignton didn't fit in with Gibbs.
Those are all players that were signed, or re-signed, to huge contracts with previous coaches. That will kill a team, no matter who the owner is.
The difference this year is we have the same coach for the third straight year. He's purged the roster of players that don't buy into his system and he's picking the players that we DO sign. This isn't 2000, when Snyder simply signed all the big names that became available regardless of need (such as Deion Sanders and Jeff George, who played positions already filled by pro-bowlers.) This is Joe Gibbs picking specific players he needs and Snyder going out and getting them. So the roster turnover is deliberate and done with a specific purpose in mind. This is clear if you look at last year, when we replaced our top three WRs and ended up with a significantly better passing game. Coaching stability is the key. We've got that.
So I guess you could instead crow that we're killing our cap space. That the size of the contracts, and not the roster turnover, is a reason to criticize our signings. I guess you could. But that specific criticism is getting a LITTLE old, dontcha think? In 2004 one of the most intelligent and respected members of this board told me the Commanders had two years to win a SB before the team blew up. Here we are two years later, no blown up team, and that same song is at the top of the charts. Maybe in 2009 or so Cap Hell will hit. Yeah, let's go with that.
I guess you could criticize our lack of draft picks. Personally, this is the only criticism that holds any weight to me. But Gibbs has always preferred veterans to draft picks. He's never built through the draft before, so if we can afford to build through FA (and we clearly can) I don't see why he HAS to build through the draft now, simply because the rest of the world does. The last time I checked, the rest of the world wasn't in the Hall of Fame with three rings.
So at this point you'll have to forgive me if I don't curl into a little ball and cry about my team's future.
Maybe you guys are happy with the way your front office does things as opposed to mine (though it has yielded lesser results.) That's cool. I'm happy with my guys as well.
See ya all in a few months.
