The Cowboys have been a mess over the years. Jerry trying his best to get one more super bowl out of the aging dynasty in the 90's and robbing from the future to do it along with poor planning. Since those times we've been predominantly a mess. Sure Parcells saved the team from the depths of NFL abyss with the likes of the Raiders and Jags. But outside of unearthing one Tony Romo, his team reached it's peak under the more lax Wade Phillips, while on game day during 2007 the more lax atmosphere and more chancy playcalling the team looked poised to be a championship team. But the culture started to slip, things just weren't right, and you could see it in their inconsistencies until they bottomed out in 2010. I was really happy with last years success, and while that in itself leads to quite a bit of optimism, watching that press conference of our newest UDFA, something really stood out. The leadership of this team was fundamental in courting Collins. Some of those guys are barely more than kids, especially those guys on the line. I'm just floored by the guy really. The fact that a guy like this who could go anywhere he wanted to go, but thinks that this group of guys is what gives him a chance to be his best, just reinforced what a strong and powerful culture is here right now. Something special is brewing here in Dallas.

Credit Jerry Jones on this. I admire him for being able to close the deal. He very well knew that Collins was going to sign with the Boys if they had Ty Smith, Frederick, Martin, Polk and Romo come along for diner. Jones probably didn't say much to Collins. Maybe he talked to his mom most of the time.

It was the players that came for diner that got Collins thinking he's a "fit" in Dallas. All made possible by Jerry himself.

Nice post. I feel the same way you do. For a kid his age to be so passionate, it just amazed me.

Yes yes yes. So glad this team is coming together with Romo still kicking.

This may be a stupid question, but who is "Polk" ?

Maybe Frank Pollack the Oline coach? I sure hope that is what he meant, otherwise Ben Bass and Chris Polk are secret coaches for our team while playing on other teams.

LOL yes thats what I meant and I apologize.

The big key here is coaching. I believe the GM position is the most overrated position in the NFL. Had we gotten this draft and Collins and Wade Phillips and Hudson Houck were coaching, I think it ends badly and is a great disappointment.

I think bad coaching in football has horrible after effects, even when the bad coach leaves. I think it happens on every level...NFL, college, high school, even youth football. The good part is that with the way the NFL is structured you can recover in 3-4 years from a bad coach instead of like college where it can literally ruin a program for generations.

What we have seen the last few years is the transformation from Jerry running the show to Garrett and Stephen running the show. Add in a side of McClay and we are a well oiled machine now.

Pollack has some tough shoes to fill with the departure of Callahan. I'm sure he will do well.

Good call. I had zero idea what he was getting at there. I thought he was referring to Witten, but calling him Polk for some weird reason.

Very good insight.

I am blown away that the "America's Team" aura still has an affect on these kids, an aura that is far removed from the Super Bowl glory it is usually identified with. I've heard it from players, the media and even other team forums - the Star is still a powerful lure (the poor people of Buffalo knew in their hearts they had no shot at Collins).

You have to give credit to Jerry for keeping it alive with his infectious enthusiasm and non stop selling of the brand, and of course being the visionary of one of the greatest pieces of architecture of our time. I also think Romo deserves credit that will truly be able to be quantified by keeping us at least competitive on teams that with a JAG would've won 3-5 games in some seasons. Those 8-8 teams were never boring and we were always must see TV down the stretch, keeping the team relevant to the lovers and haters. Collins mentioned both Jerry and Tony as two men he could relate to in understanding his adversity who had persevered.

A storied history built by great players and coaches that created a world renowned brand has survived a long drought and is poised once again to make another run and although nobody knows how it will play out - the fact that as fans we can legitimately look forward to being in Super Bowl contention again is exhilarating.
