Ok, I'm under no illusions that Jerry ever reads a thing on this board, but just in case, I'm putting my note in the bottle and casting it out to sea.
Dear Mr. Jones,
I think I can tell you how to make your team better, have most people singing your praises, and save your face (not literally of course), all at the same time.
1. As a part of your new tough team policy make it a rule that no one speaks to the media this year except you (but only in your role as GM) and your head coach. If you are dead set on Wade Phillips as your head coach (this is the saving face part), then you need to do everything in your power to give the man the appearance of authority. Go to the Parcells rule (learn something from your past investment), and make your head coach the face and voice of your team.
2. Cut T.O. immediately. Whether some of the reports are exaggerated or not, where there is this much smoke (now three different teams), there is fire. He is 35 years old and we saw teams get farther than yours this year with less talented WR groups. (See Philly) Not only should you do this, you should say that it was done because Wade Phillips wanted it done. You will send a message to your team that all the squawking has to stop and that the buck stops with coaches not with players. This will also send a message to the fans that things REALLY are going to change with your team this year.
3. Stop undercutting your coaches in favor of players. Even if you think a player is right, support your coaches in public and share your opinions with coaches privately. Don't let a single player bypass a coach to come to you. Give your coaches authority.
4. Have the coaches sit down with all the players who think they are better than they are. You know who they are. Patrick Crayton, for one, sounds off like he is a Pro Bowl wideout when he is a 3rd receiver at best. And he is just one example. Have your coaches sit down with those guys and have a "get real" meeting. Either they get humble, and get humble fast, or replace their rear end.
5. Have your 60 million dollar QB either LOOK and SOUND like he is living for football, or begin to make plans now on a backup plan. Talk to him. Maybe the reality isn't perception, but let him know that perception IS REALITY as far as fans are concerned, and sometimes even as far as team mates are concerned. Have him sit down and listen to Aikman's recent interview with Irvin. Make him listen to it and take it in. Why did Aikman have such respect from Irvin? Because Aikman was a great leader in every way.
6. Please stop talking football like you are a scout or a coach. Please. You don't have to stop playing "football man". You can still have fun with your toy. But at least pretend you are a GM and not a scout or a coach.
a. no one takes you seriously in that role anyway
b. It makes you look and sound like a buffoon.
c. It makes your coaches look like a buffoon because they are UNDER you.
7. Go on record, go public, with the idea that Wade Phillips (or any future head coach), has to be more in charge. Stop saying YOU are going to crack the whip, and take a step back, and make it clear that YOU are looking TO YOUR HEAD COACH for football leadership. Even it isn't real it will make you a whole lot more popular.
This is not a complete list, but its a start. And if you would follow this simple plan your image would improve, your fans would have some new hope for 2009, and team chemistry would improve.
Sincerely,
A fan wanting a reason to hope.
