How Was This Not A Penalty?

In that picture it looks even more clear that he didn't grab the facemask. He controlled him by pushing on it. Every time a runningback uses the stiff arm he's controlling the defender by his facemask, that's why it works.

Watch Barry Church's head get shoved back. If that's not being 'controlled' by the facemask, the rule has no meaning.

Barber would shove defenders back while not grabbing the facemask. The NFL got so mad about his doing that, they vowed to begin cracking down it. He's been out of the league for 4 years now, so I guess they decided to just stop calling it?

That's the exact thing covered by the Barber rule. I don't know why it wasn't called, other than that NFL rules are inherently confusing--witnessed by the numerous people in this thread who don't think it was a penalty.

The tinkering with the rules started back in 2009 and it's gotten progressively worse. Now nobody really knows what constitutes a catch because it was so important to justify that ruling Dez didn't catch that ball in the 2014 playoffs.

"Officials have been told to throw a flag when an offensive player grabs onto or twists the facemask of a defender -- a 15-yard facemask penalty -- or when he violently shoves a defender aside with a stiff arm to the face -- a 15-yard hands-to-the-face penalty."

Agree or disagree with the rules, it seems obvious that play violates the second part of that rule. Except for no star on his helmet.

If that's the rule they should have called it. Because he clearly shoved him violently aside with a stiff arm to the face.

The Barber rule is for punching (delivering a blow) not for pushing (stiff arm).

Where is that quote from? It's not the rule.

The NFL makes new rules a point of emphasis, so they get called more during their first couple of seasons.

Have you noticed how a lot more corners, including ours, are being handsy with receivers up and down the field but the league is not calling illegal contact nearly as much as it was the first few years?

The only thing that bothers me is when they are not consistent with it. If you're not going to call all of them, don't call none of them so the players can know what to expect. But I think the league for the most part doesn't want to call all of the penalties it can during a game because the flow of the game would be messed up and games would last forever.

All I ask is that games are called equally, and it's been that way so far this season. Dallas has been unfairly penalized at times and so have their opponents. Some calls have been missed both ways as well.

We could argue for the pass interference on third down that was missed when the defender hit Witten early. San Fran could argue against the personal foul called when Dak was fighting against being sacked and the defender pushed him to the ground just as the whistle blew.

Exactly...a punch like Batber used to do. Not what happened here.

You mean like this, which looks exactly the same as to what is being shown in that video...

Also, I'm not reading "punch" in what you just posted. Now I think the rule is stupid myself, I'm just wondering where you're getting "punch" at.

I guess technically it was a penalty, but in all seriousness you could call a penalty on just about every dam play but the games would be 6 hours long.

And as far as this being some conspiracy against the Boyz, remember that Dallas is the 3rd least penalized team in the NFL.

If Zeke grabs people by the facemask and shoves them down with it like Hyde did here, trust me, he'll get flagged. I have absolutely no doubt about that.

I hope he doesn't but even if he does I like these plays. I want more of them.

I like stiff arms. Don't know why they made it a penalty after all these years. Sux

There's only been 3 rules I can think of made specifically for Dallas players.
Barber, Roy, and Emmitt.

It's only a coincidence. Also, ignore the fact Romo is repeatedly allowed to be pummeled very late with no call. There is no inherent bias in the population or the refs. There is no Cowboy jealously or hate. See Steven A smith.
