Hail fellows, patriots and wards of the court, tell me your gut feelings about our inexperienced (inexperienced to Dallas and the playbook) wide receivers. How will they do in 2018?

If me bean counters at the Farmers Branch rec center are correct, our Cowboys amassed (o_O) 3,326 total yards in 2017, a fair amount if you are a Cleveland fan. Total passing yards by our 16 opponents: 3,746, against our middling to bad secondary.

A quick rundown since 2015:

2015: 3,677 Cowboys passing yards / 3,861 passing yards, opponents
2016: 3,759 Cowboys passing yards / 4,376 passing yards, opponents (horrific pass defense!)
2017: 3,326 Cowboys passing yards / 3,746 passing yards, opponents (improvement in pass defense!)

This so-called passing attack by committee has failure written all over it, imho, mates.
The only good thing about it, ruffians, is that our opponents won't be able to key in on any particular receivers.
The bad thing, cooty fellows? The defenses will stack the line against Zeke and, potentially, shut us down.

Tell me how you think our WR corps will do in 2018, good lads! Will the pressure fall on the poor sap who is our starting TE?
I look for a downturn in total passing yards, to ... say 3,200 total yards for about 200 per yards a game. Some games 150 measly total yards.

What say you, me hearties? Tell me I am overly pessimistic!

Teams will stack the box and Dak will make them pay. 4,000 yards passing is attainable if our defense can stay off the field and abandon the bend but don't break mindset.

Well 200 yards per game would be a vast improvement in consistency actually... So I would take it lol.

Let's face the facts and be logical about what the alternatives suggest, shall we? Dez was anything but overly generous to the needs of Dallas in 2017. Let me encourage you to patiently stand by and dutifully take note of what the newbies in Dallas' wr roster have to contribute this year. They have established a fair amount of success in college. Goodness only knows what's in store for them to prove in terms of the pro game. Let's hope it's a lot and then some.

I can envision many outcomes, to be honest.

Looking through an optimistic lens:

Much of the Cowboys struggles, particularly in the offensive line wasn't the QB or the WR's; the offensive lines struggles beget and exposed their WR and QB issues simultaneously. With the additions during Free Agency and the draft acquisition of Connor Williams, those issues could be firmly ensconced in the past.

If the offensive line can return to their 2016 form or better, this offense should be fine; with or without what is considered to be a #1 receiver.

Looking through a pessimistic lens:

My concern is not so much the receivers but the coaches themselves when it comes to X's and O's, in general. I strongly believe the Cowboys offense could be great; easily top 5, if the coaches manage the offense properly. By that I mean, they go back to running the offense the way Dak feels comfortable running it. By that I mean, they use Tavon Austin in more than just simple gimmick plays that eventually tells defenses in future games what play we are about to call by him simply being on the field. By that I mean, they spread the ball around and get every receiver involved, and not just their top 3, but literally every receiver that dresses for the game. By that I mean, they get creative and take more chances and don't take the opposition for granted and just simply assume they can execute their way to a win...let the scheme do some heavy-lifting, from time to time.

I believe they have the ingredients to be a very dangerous offense, however, they can't run it the way they have in previous years and expect it to work better without the services of Dez and Witten. No, if this offense is going to reach it's potential, they are going to have to get creative and keep the opposition guessing. Again, they have the tools to do it, it's just a question of whether or not Garrett will play it safe, as he does normally or will he be bold?

It reminds me of our running back by committee in 2015.

Which probably means we will be drafting a WR in 1st round in 2019 if not a QB:))

I'd go with 3,600 yards, 25 passing TDs, 8 picks, and another 8 TDs rushing.

Let's hope our pass defense improves or we start talking about it instead of second guessing the offensive play calling again.

Passing offense has to be improved from 26th ranked without our 2 most productive recievers.

Right? What could go wrong?

You're overly pessimistic.

They stacked the box *last* year, played single coverage press man against our wide outs, and got away with it. Between the coaches, the WRs (Dez and TWill), the QB, and the oline (in that order), we didn't make them pay for it.

What's different this year?
A clear understanding by the coaching staff that the WR attack was not getting it done, and changes needed to be made. And a clear change in strategy emphasizing separation and adding speed.

New WRs that add separation and speed.

Tyron reported to be healthy.
High quality upgrade at LG.
Collins is through his learning curve at RT.
Much stronger depth at T with Fleming.

Zeke available for the full season.

Another year of development for Dak, and all the above improvements making life easier on him.

It could be that 8-10 teams ahead of us with better skills and talents fall flat on their faces....
We shall see, optimistic lad.

The talking heads base those same teams success this year off of last year. I believe some will fall. Plus tape is out on those teams.

Tape tape tape!

Diehardblues,

You are being rather pessimistic. There have been a lot of pump up articles about the Cowboys. Unfortunately, I share your sentiment.

Until Dak can beat the defense through the air with 8 in the box, that is the way most will defend against the Cowboys.
