How will Romo do against a Jim Johnson defense?

Outside of all the obvious reasons this game is so critical, I found one more.

How does Romo respond to J. Johnson's defense. This game can set the tone for the next few years. I believe that certain players or teams can have another teams number.
So and so always kills this teams defense or this defense always gives this QB fits.

This first match up with them under Romo is key.

How does he respond?

Does he have the right mix of pocket presence, down field vision, mobility and accuracy to give this Eagle defense fits?

Will he remain calm and focused.

Does he come out smoking? Put them off balance like Bledsoe did in week five last year? Does he beat the blitz with mobilty and quick accurate passes?

I SAY YES TO ALL.

I say Romo has a huge day and will be the story here.
We get off fast, never look back and win this one going away.

So much of it depends on the defense. If the D holds them then I think we grind em out. Pretty much like we have done all year. If the D gets walked on it could turn out to be another ATL game.

Since Kearse got hurt where does Philly apply the most pressure? DE? DT?

If DT we need to get JJ involved. He had a lot of success against Philly with sweeps etc. If DE then go to Barber. If we run on them it will be hard for them to stop us if Romo is on.

Romo might have to run the ball in this one.

The real question is, how well will the Cowboys OL BLOCK a JJ defense when the Eagles DC throws everything but the kitchen sink at it. If the Cowboys block JJ's blitzes then Romo will eat the Eagles alive.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Eagles blitz less and less throughout the game.

All it will take is for Romo to burn them a couple of times.

Good question. I would just like to say... its NOT Drew back there so the results will be better regardless.... He will not be taking a sack EVERYTIME its possible(where Drew was)

I would like to know how J.Johnson has done against the somewhat mobile QB's this year?

anyone know?

He will make the blitz pay or they will just do a bunch of draw plays to frustrate the blitz by having it run itself out of the play.

Hopefully we'll run the ball well enough that we won't have to find out.

I respect Jim Johnson ability as a DC but this is not the same intimidating defense he has coached in the past. Teams can score on them and they are not getting near the pressure on the QB as they have in the past.

The one thing Romo does very well is read a blitz. Witten could have a field day if they keeps sending it.

Just posted this on another thread.

For all the falts the Eagles team and its defense have, they are well coached and have historically played above their talent level.
Johnson has done this with quit a bit of disception and excellent game planning.

They will take away some of what Tony does best. And as always they will guess run/pass. They do this a lot. Pre snap they often have defensive plays called that have a much higher success ratio against what they're designed to stop at the expense of defending other options.
In reality they gamble, or cheat. They are the antithesis of a Parcels defense.

Our coaching staff and Romo in paticular needs to "figure it out".
That's when you get huge holes to run through, and big gaps in thier pass defense.

Dallas needs to stick with the run early to set up the pass, I thought they made a huge mistake last game not running the ball more often. Even Eagle players admitted after the game they were willing to give up some run plays in order to try and get some sacks and turnovers when Dallas passed.

My biggest concearn is their Oline, they have controlled the LOS the last few times Dallas has played them and Dallas' pass rush has been horrible the last few weeks.

I would fall out my chair if the Eagles blitzed less given how horribly this OL deals with stunts and blitzes,,, going 5 wide may be the only answer (and a good answer too, considering how well Romo runs it)

Well if I was the Eagles the last thing I'd do is put 8 in the box except when it was a blitz. Otherwise why bother when you know if Jones is in the game and it's a running play as long as one guy gets to him he's down.

Overall I'd just keep Romo in the pocket and drop into coverage. Little bit like the Saints did. Oh Jones had a better than usual day that way but Romo struggled big time.. at least in the area where he's otherwise been gold. 3rd down passing. He's been leading the league in that category but on that particular day he was 0-7 through 3 quarters. If not just because he had an off day, but because the guys were covered so well.

This will be the biggest challenge of Romo's career so far.

In 39 pass plays against blitzes, Romo has:
33 attempts
18 completions
13 first downs
6 sacks
1 TD
2 INT
59.5 rating

It's not so much 8 men in the box and it's not so much the blitzing.
Its the style.
They often play pass on first and second down.
They get their four lineman shooting gaps and getting up the field. In addition to that they often send two LB's behind them to blow up running plays in the backfield or add to the pass rush.

One of the best ways to combat this is to effectively screen pass.
The other way is to block and hit the natural holes this style creates in the running game.

If they put 8 in the box TG or TO is one on one. Air Romage :D

If we run the screen pass I hope it is to JuJo. If we give him any open field he will get a lot more yards than Barber.

I would like to see JuJo in some 3rd down situations.

I agree with setting the tone for Romo, and you are right, if the Cowboys can crack the defensive scheme early, then it might be off to the races. But don't think Johnson's defense is infallible. The Eagles were 5-4 when McNabb went down. Something was amiss.
