How will Romo do against a Jim Johnson defense?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Eagles blitz less and less throughout the game.

All it will take is for Romo to burn them a couple of times.
like bledsoe and terry glenn did last year at home.

Outside of all the obvious reasons this game is so critical, I found one more.

How does Romo respond to J. Johnson's defense. This game can set the tone for the next few years. I believe that certain players or teams can have another teams number.
So and so always kills this teams defense or this defense always gives this QB fits.

This first match up with them under Romo is key.

How does he respond?

Does he have the right mix of pocket presence, down field vision, mobility and accuracy to give this Eagle defense fits?

Will he remain calm and focused.

Does he come out smoking? Put them off balance like Bledsoe did in week five last year? Does he beat the blitz with mobilty and quick accurate passes?

I SAY YES TO ALL.

I say Romo has a huge day and will be the story here.
We get off fast, never look back and win this one going away.
Let me say it like this. That 2.5 second clock that Parcells implemented in Training Camp that caused a horn to go off is vital now. Jim Johnson's blitz schemes are exactly why Parcells had to do something like that.

Bledsoe could never beat that 2.5 seconds. Romo could and for 5 games it was a big (read huge) reason why his numbers were out of the stratosphere they were so high.

He'll have to be that sharp again this week and he can be. If he is, then the Eagles blitz will be made to pay.

I love blitzing because it's exciting. It's also high risk. I just wish we blitzed from somewhere other than just right up the middle with the same 2 or 3 guys. The effectiveness of a blitz is all about how well it is disguised. No one is better than Johnson at that.

Well we do that a little bit obviously.. we've sent Newman a few times.. Henry, but as much as disguise it's execution too.

Take the ever so simple blitz the Eagles did against the Giants that resulted in the defensive TD at the end.

All it really was, was the slot defender being sent. But he didnt take the wide way around.. around the edge, he came through a gap between the DE and DT. One of the reasons it worked so good was because those guys purposely created a huge hole by the way *they* rushed. DE going way wide, DT going narrow.

If those guys dont do that and just push straight ahead, theres a good chance that the blitzer will get hung up for just a split second trying to get through the narrower gap. That can be the diff tween drillin the QB while he still has the ball and being that tick late.

I just hope he does'nt have a NO type game. I've got 14 people here at 2pm for Christmas dinner. At 5pm the Christmas music (Sinatra, J Mathis, Dean Martin etc) will be turned down low and the big screen will be activated, may even break out the Romo jersey!

ROMO needs to get the early jump on JJ's defense. Get them on their heels so to speak. Can't wait!! And hope Owens has at least two TD's.

Great post. Nicely explains why our blitzes up the middle are failing. We do not create holes.

Then to take it one step further.. how much of that is on coaching and how much is it on player cognizance? I cant believe they havent been coached on that.. but do the players always "remember" in the heat of battle?

Or what if as it turned out the Giants would've kept/moved a back in on that side of the formation before the snap? If you're the defender and your number is called to blitz there, do you still come knowing you'll have to get around the RB somehow? Or do you "cancel" it because you kinda know it'll probably be pointless to blitz there because if you, as a lone blitzer, dont actually get to the QB you might just as well stay back in coverage in the first place?

I wonder about these things with some of our guys.. like in the latter case, once their number is called, blitzing come hell or high water and then just getting picked off anyway and oweing to a better chance that a "good" play will be made against them.

the stage is set for Romo to TORCH jj's defense while he blitzes/rushes then they'll back off and our running game will take over.

All Romo has to do in my opinion is take off running a few times. If he gains any positive yards, philly will have to start slowing down the blitz.
Romo seems to me any ways, to want to stay back and throw.

There have been a few times a game he should have just run.

Philly is dirty enough to try and hurt him even if he slides. Look for Colombo to brawl if this happens. Ejections will be handed out like Christmas presents.

Romo does very well against the blitz and I think when they blitz us they will pay for it.

Im worried about our defense. I know our offense will be ready money.

I think we will see a lot of zone coverage from our defense because Philly runs so many short routes and they will set up big passes and get mismatches on our safeties like they did in the first game.

Dont worry about Romo and the Offense... Worry about our defense.

I honestly wish I knew the answer to this. It looks like our players are taught to push their guy backwards and no other direction. I can't believe that's the goal or mindset, but that is how it looks. I certainly don't want to believe that any of them are too weak to move their guy outside.

The teams that have given him trouble have brought pressure from the edges and contained him in the pocket...if Johnson follows his usual MO, we will light them up.

The book on Romo is play coverage, keep him in the pocket, and if you blitz do it late up the middle.

I find that defenses that depend on the blitz are much more effective with a nice lead. If the eagles get up, and romo is forced to pass on first downs i predict 2 picks and an eagles win....
If the game is close, or dallas gets up early i predict an efficient game from romo and a cowboys win...
