How Would You Rank Our Needs?

The off-season is about to be full steam ahead next week with FA kicking off. With some of the moves we made this week, cutting Sensy and tagging Spencer, I'm wondering how this changes how you view our needs and the order of importance.

1. Safety

I really want to put RT or interior OL here and would have no problem with the team spending our 1st to address either, but releasing Sensabaugh has thrown a wrench into this for me. We cannot go into the season with Church coming off an achilles injury and either Matt Johnson/Danny McCray as our plan A at the safety positions. That's a disaster waiting to happen, and as we stand we have the worst Safety situation in the league heading into the off-season. MUST be addressed.

2. C/OG

We re-signed Costa and have Mack and Livings under contract for a few more seaons, so unlike Safety we at least have some insurance policy at the interior OL. But that's not to say we should consider ourselves "set" at the positions. We need to bring in at least 1 guy, whether it's C or OG, to challenge for the job... and preferably it's an upgrade in talent.

3. OT

Free was our worst lineman last season and I don't expect him to return, but luckily we have a possible replacement already on the roster in Jeremy Parnell. But, he's a little bit of an unknown and we could use someone to challenge for the job as insurance policy. Also, it's important in today's league to have a quality swing Tackle off the bench.

4. RB

This is a bigger need than it should be because of the question marks surrounding DeMarco Murray and his ability to stay on the field. He fell in the draft due to durability concerns, and while he's great when healthy, those durability concerns have stayed with him in the NFL. With Felix likely done in Dallas we have the opportunity to bring in another back, but it can't be a "compliment" back... we need to almost plan like Murray isn't on the team. Luckily, starting quality backs can be found after Round 1 and all the way through the middle rounds.

5. OLB

Carter and Lee are entrenched into 2 LB spots, but what are we doing about the 3rd? We've been drafting 3-4 LBs for years and unfortunately guys like Albright and Wilbur are odd fits in this new scheme. Sims or Connor might be an option as a stopgap, but neither are longterm answers at Sam and if we have the opportunity to grab a legitimate starter we need to pull the trigger.

6. DE

Even if Spencer stays for this season, his future is up in the air and we don't have legitimate options to replace him. Crawford lacks the athleticism and quick-twitch ability to be an effective edge rusher, he'll likely slide inside in the new scheme. Outside of Ware and Spencer who are the edge rushers under contract?? It's a critical position in this new D that requires quality depth.

7. DT

A rotation of Ratliff, Hatcher, Crawford and Lissemore is pretty solid but both starters are on the wrong side of 30 and neither would be confused with pro-bowl talent. We're OK there if we don't address it this off-season, but if an opportunity arises where we can land a blue chip 3-tech we need to think long and hard about it.

8. WR

When Dez and Miles are healthy they are a fantastic duo on the outside and Harris can hold his own in the slot. The problem, Miles is hamstung too often and when he goes down we don't really have another WR on the roster who can win consistently opposite Dez on the outside. He also has not lived up to the contract extension and we would be wise to start grooming an eventual replacement. Even if Miles is healthy, he's someone who can slide into the slot leaving another opportunity for an outside WR to step in and make plays. We could use another WR with the height/weight/speed combination of a Dez or Miles.

1. OG/OC- Mack and Costa are good backups and Livings is just ok. I'd like 1 very good guard brought in to play LG and let Mack/Costa battle it out for C with the best man winning.
2. RT- Free HAS to be cut and Parnell is a ? at best

3. Safety- We are probably going to go with what we have SS and its a deep FS clss for this draft + a few good FS free agents. Its definitely a need, but it shouldn't be a hard 1 to fill.
4. LB- I don't see a 3rd LB on this roster right now.
5. DT- We lack a big nasty 1 Tech
6. RB- Again, its a need but running backs are becoming a dime a dozen in todays NFL. 5th round pick or cheap FA will fill the back up role just fine.

I agree with your points. A couple of thoughts,

I think Safety is a must (as S Jones said a couple weeks ago). I think we will get a mid-level vet and then draft a guy in the first 3 rounds. We know that the Cowboys are meeting with Vaccaro privately, for example.

As for OC/OG, I think it was either JJ or S Jones who mentioned we have to get another guy in there either via FA or the Draft.

These two positions are priority, imo.

As for RB, once again it was mentioned once again by the staff that we need another back in there, and that Dunbar was viewed more as a number 3.

I think WR will be higher than people think,we have no 3 receiver on our roster( a guy who can start if Dez or Miles is injured).

1) G/C Pressure up the middle is killing us. What we had last year is not close to good enough.

2) OT or DT Tie here. We get little pressure up the middle without Ratliff and we cant count on him IMO. Brent would have been a perfect 1 tech. But we have no one else to take his spot. Parnell is NOT the answer and is just a smoke screen to keep us from focusing on right tackle.

3) Safety is a must, but won't matter who is there if we don't have the "Bigs"

The rest looks good to me

We have ONE player on the O line (OUT OF 5) that is good.

Carpet bomb the O line this year.

There are plenty of solid DEs with similar athletic ability and size to Crawford. He will likely play outside until he proves otherwise. Kiper had him as an end in both formations.

For me it is...

Oline first...interior Oline than OTs.
DT's second... 3 tech first, DE than 1 Tech
Safety
WR
Rest

However I think the Cowboys see things different.

With Stephen Jones comments about Safety being important and added to them letting Sensy go, with Church coming off achilles injury and a rookie from last year that has not played a down (preseason or regular).

So I think the Cowboys see it as...

Safety
DT 3 Tech first
DE Second
DT 1 tech last
OG/C
WR
OT

rest

So again...there is what I see and what I think the cowboys see. Two different things.

I think we should keep that in mind going into the draft. That what we see and what the team sees could be very different.

anything else is just gravey
but that does'nt mean i would target the draft in that order. i think dt is gonna be the pick at 18 because the quality drops off alot late in the 2nd while there will still be guards there in the 2nd. a also think safety is something i would look to f.a. for

I'd still put it pretty far down the list.
But yes, I'd prefer another outside guy too.
However, I think if Harris started, he could put up about 800+ yards and 6-7 TDs...jmo

Draft the following for future success...
1. G = Chance Womack
2. OT = Kyle Long
3. G = Barrett Jones
4. DT = Brandon Williams
5. RB = Mike Gillislee

We have a WR (Danny Coale) from VT that was hurt last year...he should be able to go this year. And Safety...well...Kiffin will have to find someone to put there (Matt Johnson or Caleb McSurdy).

I don't know what the Boys think of Free and Parnell. Personally I'd rank it as:

1. OT
2. G/C
3. S
4. DL including pass rusher
5. RB

Clubs are always looking for CBs and pass rushers. They're always looking for playmakers. This year you can throw a CB into the mix after the first couple of rds. They might not pass of a dynamic, fast, cover LB either.

S and the OL are tops though esp T. IMO. That list will likely change after FA.

1. Right Tackle - Disaster Position in 2012 with no in-house options that I'd consider a strong starter.

2. Left Guard - Another disaster spot in 2012.

3. Defensive Tackle - Ratliff and even Hatcher are getting old.

4. Defensive End - Don't necessarily need a starter right away but I'd like to draft someone with a high pick in a JPP mold. Develop a beast down the line who is ready to replace Spencer in 2014.

5. Safety - We are hurting there, but it's not a high-value position in today's NFL. Not something I'd spend big money or a 1st round pick on.

6. Outside Linebacker - We have a hole in our lineup there, but Carter and Lee will be able to make up for any deficiency a lower-level 3rd starter may have.

7. Running Back - Murray is injury prone but we can use a 4th or 5th rounder on this and be fine.
