Ok, skip the Cowboys of the 90s. Instead looks at the offensive lines of:
  • Rams 1983 to 1991
  • Chargers 2002 to 2004
  • Dolphins 2005 to 2007

Hudson is the top of the offensive line coach food chain.

All very excellent points, however, I will reserve judgement until I see the results on the field.

Remember, this team is sending 3 players on the Offensive Line to Hawaii.

With 12 Seasons without a Playoff win and 3-4 Seasons watching fairly good teams failing to make the Playoffs or stumbling when they arrived there, my argument is that it isn't the Coaching.

Seems like every year, with great alacrity, we wait for the new Season to arrive because a very well respected Coach has joined the Staff. Whether it is a Hall of Fame Coach, a Coach very respected for his defense or maybe a highly venerated Offensive Line Coach, this team seems to fall short.

Yeah, I found those, but they all say 'a source claims' or 'will be hired quickly'. Like I said, nI don't see anything that says he's officially been hired yet. Not trying to start an argument, just a clarification.
I imagine negotiations are going on, so no, it's not quite official yet. But generally when leaks of this magnitude come out, it's pretty much a given.

ok, i was watching nflnetwork last night, and about 5:50 pm, they said the cowboys have a done deal with houck, something along those lines, i forgot exa ct thing this black announcer said, but he did say cowboys have houck as next offensive line coach to a deal, something like that, so i posted it,

woodysgirl did post some news to back that up, i think what it was, something was agreed upon in principle like verbally, but maybe a contract hasnt been signed yet, but verbally agreed upon, what they are waiting on, i think since they had the deal with garrett yesterday, then they are waiting for houch, jerry jones, wade phillips and garrett to get together and work on what they want and want houck to do

i also if u remember and read, wade phililips worked with the cowboys before, and he knows jerry, he has worked with wade phillips for 2 years i think, and houck has worked with jason garrett too, so i think the deal will be signed on today, if nflnetwork said its so, then they are always pretty close to things, and get headup on things, kinda like sirius radio for nfl

i think its a good thing, i remember when houck came in after tony wise left, and he took over, and helped improve nate netwon, tuneii, erik williams and larry allen, best of my knowledge, houck even went out and got another pro bowl center, and kennard i think to help our offensive line, when one player went down with a injury, im not sure about that, but i remember so vague deal about it,

so houck can help us, and he can improve on and help young guys like McQuistan, Doug Free and James Marten, and help improve Gurode even further, thats what he does mold players to becoming better than they are,

now do i think these guys we have last year and this year will be better than the 92-95 offensive line, no, that was a very special guys, with Tuneii, Gesek, Stepnoski, Erik Williams, that happens very rarely, but i do think guys like Gurode, McQuistan, Leonard Bigg Davis, Flozell Adams if he stays, remember how Houck helped Tuneii stay in shape even at his old age, and helped Erik Williams after that devasting knee injury with car accident,

now i do think that Doug Free will be a really good guy and pro bowler years to come, i am not so sure about james marten, he lost weight last year and got down to about 280 by training camp, and u cant play pro football at that size, but marten if he keeps his head on, and he does have a nasty streak at college, but he has to want to too, but i do think we will have a good line with mcquistan, doug free, gurode, davis,

i dont see kosier staying too long, unless he bulks up and gets stronger, since houck likes his offensive linemen with big butts and power, something that kosier doesnt have, if u remember in fact, the cowboys let Gesek go to the Commanders, gesek and kosier are kinda like players smaller pulling offensive linemen, but houck likes big nasty offensive linemen,

i am hoping since columbo is so big and nasty too, houck can help him this year, since strahan destroyed him in playoff game, that does need to be addressed,

I got news for you, James marten is bigger than mcquistan and free. No matter what the weight he is listed as on the site or media guide. He is immense. I am sure he will bulk up and get stronger in the next three months. If marten fails to become a player it wont be because he is too small.

Well, the D did improve significantly this year from last year. Take a look at where we ranked of D in these categories the last two years.

Passer Rating Against: 20th in 2006, 5th in 2007
Sacks: 19th in 2006, 3rd in 2007
INT's: 10th in 2006, 6th in 2007
Completion Percentage Against: 13th in 2006, 9th in 2007
Yards Per Attempt: 28th in 2006, 6th in 2007

This is a SIGNIFICANTLY better defense in EVERY category this year over last years and the biggest change was not in personnel but in coaching.

Why do I say his job is safe? Or why do I say I don't like our coverage teams?

You say you don't like our coverage teams because they suck... why do you think Read's job is safe?? I'd think the architect of those abysmal special teams should be very, very nervous...

Hey, I just thought of something intriguing-- I read that one of the few coaches that Parcells kept around was Steve Hoffman, the ex-Cowboys kicking guru... maybe my memory's failing, but wasn't Parcells the reason the Boys sent Hoffman packing?? Could it be that the Tuna thinks in hindsight that move was a bad mistake??

Let's have a few drinks and talk about my return, Jerry.

Does he even need some drinks and a new contract? Just hop in the Delorean.:

Too bad to see that Bruce Read will be back. That's the one guy I think needs to be replaced. Maybe Hos will be wrong for once. ;)

Next thing we can talk about is who our new LB and/or DB coach will be. I'm sure Paul P and Bowles are outta here... For sure whichever one Irelandcells wants for DC.

None of these guys are irreplaceable, and I think a new voice couldn't hurt. Everyone's looking for some changes after that loss on Sunday anyway, right?

One of Houck's biggest assets is his ability to teach run blocking. The Cowboys run blocking was questionable sometimes last season. (He has been the oline coach for some of the best running backs of all time and some very good ones that aren't all-time greats.

  • Emmitt Smith
  • LaDainian Tomlinson
  • Chris Warren
  • Eric Dickerson
  • Ronnie Brown
Some of their success can be contributed to Houck. His legacy is tied to those running backs.
  • With the Rams (9 Years): 5 Linemen had 21 Pro Bowls, Eric Dickerson broke 2,100+ yards an NFL record at the time
  • Seahawks (1 year): Chris Warren had his first of of four straight 1,000+ yard seasons.
  • With the Cowboys (9 Years): 6 Linemen had 22 Pro Bowls, only 206 sacks given up in those nine years, Emmitt Smith rushed for 11,974 yards over those nine years (averages to about 1,330 yards per season) always rushing for over 1,000 yards.
  • Chargers (3 years): LT rushed for 1,300+ yard in all three seasons and Houck did it in 2004 with all new starters.
  • Dolphins (3 years): In Houck's first year with the Dolphins he cut their sack totals in half. Ronnie Brown if projected (without the injuries) for full seasons would have had 967 yards in 2005, 1240 yards in 2006, and 1,389 yards in 2007.

With Houck coming in, I'm not as terrifed of losing Flozell Adams as I was.

Yes, a very strong cogent argument can be made that the defense played better.

However, at this particular point in time, I am concerning myself with the bigger picture.

Last year, one could point to the Defense as the major problem. Conversely, one can point to the Offense and make a great case that it was the primary reason for the Team's lackluster results in the Playoffs.

Based on the aforementioned, as well as our penchant for fading towards the end of the Season, is the reason why one needs to focus on the bigger picture, which is why this team cannot get over the proverbial hump.
