Heres a little fact that might catch a few of the die hards off guard a bit...
Houck was our OL coach for "nine years", yes thats 9!
Everone knows he was an OL coach here, but I was unaware of that tenure,, I would have guessed four or five max.
At times during Houck's tenure the Cowboys' line was one of the most dominant in the history of the game.
The 203 sacks they allowed in nine years under Houck were the fewest of any NFL team in that span.
Six offensive linemen earned 22 trips to the Pro Bowl under Houck, including Larry Allen (7), Nate Newton (5), Erik Williams (4), Ray Donaldson (2), Mark Stepnoski (2) and Mark Tuinei (2).
Future Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith earned a pair of rushing titles during Houck's tenure, and rushed for over 1,000 yards every season.
When he was with the San Diego Chargers from 2002 to 2004, Houck transformed one of the league's worst offensive lines to one of the best.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for more than 1,300 yards in each of Houck's three seasons with the team.
With five new starters on the line in 2004, the Chargers ranked 10th in total offense and sixth in rushing. The Chargers allowed fewer than 25 sacks per season under Houck.
Last season while with the Dolphins, Houcks' influence actually helped that horrible OL as well, improving that sorry OL to 4th in the league for sacks allowed.
BP made a bad move IMO, paying Sparano that kind of coin, thats OK.... good luck to Sparano, but in the end, I think Jerrys' laughing under the cuff, because the Cowboys end up with one of the premier OL minds in the league.
Teams game planned back in the early 90s' on how to stop our running game with Emmitt, but the bottom line was always that they couldnt prevent it.
This team didnt even have a very expansive play book offensively in that era, but they were so dominant in what they did, that the amount of plays didnt matter, they would just drive it down their opponents throats, and it just couldnt be stopped.
Emmitt was a great talent,,, no doubt, and a great key in Hudsons prior tenure, but this current team has some nice pieces in place for him as well.
I see a more defined and dominant running game this season.
Hudson will bring back the road grater mentality!
