it wasn't much of a secret to keep. It was obvious his story wasn't finished yet.

They were trying to keep it under wraps similar to what the Walking Dead just did. Nobody really knew what his story was going to be and everyone knows GRM loves killing people off. Then you have the producers and Kit himself saying how he's done with the show and moving on. They had every intention of having him as a surprise rebirth, but with the way media, particularly social media is these days, that was not going to be possible to keep secret for 9 months.

Dany Tyrion and Jon seem like the 3 main characters of the story and will be around til at least the last book

They do seem like it, but he wouldn't have been the 1st seemingly main character to be off'd in the show. Once people got to looking and researching contracts and all of that the shock wore off it became clear he would be back. Now everyone is going to basically have a meh moment when he comes back because anyone who's been paying attention knows he's not going anywhere now.

I said this in the game in the thrones show thread along time ago.... I knew who the the focus was on when Little Finger did :"The Ladder" monolog. Juxtaposed with that monolog was John reaching the summit of the Wall, and seeing the sunlight. If I'm not mistaken (I think), we also saw the shackles of slaves fall to the ground during a scene with Kahleesi either after, before or the begging of the next show...
