I have lived in the south my whole life and have lived thru many hurricanes. I have kind of got immune to them over the years thinking that I was far enough away from the storm surge to be safe.
My brother who is 6 yrs old older than me recently told me of a story that I was too young to remember. I was 2 and Hurricane Audrey came up from the gulf in late June 1957. We lived in Lake Charles, La about 30 miles from the Gulf. My grandparents and aunts and cousins had all come to our house for safety. When Audrey came thru it started to take the roof off our house. The rains and winds were hobbile. My dad, grandfather and uncles all drove their cars into an open field and parked them right next to each other. Eveybody crawled thru the windows from one car to the other until everybody was in the center car. 10 people including a 2 yr old in one car made it thru the storm. I wish they would have taken a picture.
