I have lived in the south my whole life and have lived thru many hurricanes. I have kind of got immune to them over the years thinking that I was far enough away from the storm surge to be safe.

My brother who is 6 yrs old older than me recently told me of a story that I was too young to remember. I was 2 and Hurricane Audrey came up from the gulf in late June 1957. We lived in Lake Charles, La about 30 miles from the Gulf. My grandparents and aunts and cousins had all come to our house for safety. When Audrey came thru it started to take the roof off our house. The rains and winds were hobbile. My dad, grandfather and uncles all drove their cars into an open field and parked them right next to each other. Eveybody crawled thru the windows from one car to the other until everybody was in the center car. 10 people including a 2 yr old in one car made it thru the storm. I wish they would have taken a picture.

When I was younger, my friends and I used to take our skateboards out during tropical storms and use a sheet as a sail. Good times. But a year or two later...

My dumb *** went surfing in the middle of Hurricane Hugo off of the North Carolina coast. I'm not doing that again. I barely escaped with my life.

A rugby buddy of mine in college wasn't so lucky. We regularly partied too hard, and during a 'Hurricane Isabel' party at his house...after he had already passed out for several hours, he thought it would be a good idea to take a canoe out in a stream that runs through our town. Well, the stream was nearly a class 5 rapid at that point...and he didn't survive. He was an amazing person.

Don't underestimate weather.

During Hurricane Hugo, the eye actually came over my house and it is very true about the eye being very calm and clear. Then after awhile the back of the storm hit.

Hurricane Rita 2005

Stranded in Huntsville overnight waiting for tankers to arrive. From there, drove on E for about 40 miles up i-45 til I got to a rest stop. A kind person gave me 5 gallons they had as extra since they were riding in a diesel-fuled motoro home. That got me to Fairfield where I was able to gas up and get to Ft. Worth.

Obviously Houston was never hit, but the evacuation process itself was awful. Was on the road for about 30 hours on a normal 4 hr drive. Man, I will definitely do some things differently next time.

Hurricane Rita hit my town of Sulphur. Most the town was destroyed. No school for 3 weeks. Never looked the same.

I was a little girl living in Fla at the time
The storms passed on by
While my siblings and I were sleeping.
Thank goodness I don't live in Fla anymore.

Looks like we folks on the east coast will get some of the next one,and you may too,Passpartout. At least some of the rain! We ended up getting 11 1/2" of rain from the Ts before Gustav.
PS-I like your handle....Cantinflas was a very underrated actor!
