I actually think the OL is fine for the future!

Yesterday was very encouraging, although it was against a very weak front, but they still played well with a bunch of backups. At one point, they didn't give up a single pressure!

-Hoffman plays with an edge. Something this line lacks. He can play either Guard or Center.
-Every Richards is in the game, you never here anything about him, which is a good thing for a young lineman. He can play all positions, outside of Center.
-Bass might be a better run blocker then pass protector, but he won't be a liability, either.
-We know Tyler Smith is our best lineman on the team and can play anywhere on the left side.
-Guyton has struggled throughout his rookie season, play has been better, but has to play more clean, has hurt the team with so many penalties.
-Nathan Thomas is a big G/T in their pipeline to develop.

Unless a blinking light falls in their lap, no need to force a pick for this positional group.

Also, a new OL coach with a more modern scheme will help.

Off of basically one game you think the problem is solved?

talk about living in Homer Texas

IF the young guys perform well for the rest of the season then you MIGHT have a point

Yea, I’m not considering OL a major need. At some point you have to just get your young guys out there and play them. We can’t spend a 1st rounder on OL every other year.

I’ve seen enough from Guyton and Beebe to feel good about them moving forward so our left side is locked down. Just need someone to step up for RG and Steele is what he is.

We have seen the likes of Bass/Richards play more then one game, they have been solid. We have two rookie starters who should get better with more reps. Steele remains the biggest question mark, but you don't need 5 all pro starters to have a good OL.

Way too early to make this call. Wait and see on a lot of these guys. Big difference between filling in occasionally and being a regular. Warts show way more on a weekly basis.
Very true, which is why these young prospects need an opportunity to show their worth. I hope Martin is out a while so we can see an extended look at his future replacement.

We do have options to replace Martin if he retires or departs.

They did perform well and offer some optimism. I would really like to focus on DL. RB and DL are two strong options in this upcoming draft.

I wouldn't say it's fixed, but we've already placed a lot of bets, and need another season to see how they turn out.

I'd still draft OL if a BPA was right there in my face. It's not so solid that I'm writing off OL entirely, but it's not a priority.

Beebe yes, Guyton I'm still concerned about. Both have made some poor plays this season, but Guyton has added too many penalties and missed too many blocks.

They are both rookies of course, so I'm not expecting All Pro nods for either.

But they're a long way from "locking down the left side"

I agree, it's not a priority, but you always never have enough quality lineman. Might want to add a fa veteran to the group as they as so so young.

Not sure if Beebe is our future center or right guard. Same can be said about Guyton, but they need to play it out first. Guyton was a player who was suppose to be more developmental then ready. The penalties and durability concerns worry me.

I don't mind a holding call here and there coz sometimes it's a close call ( depending on the official ) or you trying to protect your QB. But there is no excuse for silly presnap penalties. As we know, there are always growing pains when you start a rookie, so he gets a freebie this season.

Yes, he gets a mulligan year 1, but he must improve upon playing more clean.

Guyton has given up 2 pressures in the last 2 games…he’s gotten a lot better as the season has progressed.

He can clean up the penalties just needs to continue to get reps and put the work in.

Tyler Smith was a penalty machine his rookie year too and was in a fairly similar trajectory.

I hope so. I don't want to spend another high draft pick on the OL. In terms of roster construction, you can afford 2 anchors/great OL who are worth the high pick and ensuing contract extension (maybe 3 but that's the max and it depends on how great they are). The other OL positions should be affordable average/solid players who can be plug-and-play types that are replaceable every few years.

You have a system first. Then you have your anchors to build the system around. Then everyone else is a worker bee who can fit the system and contribute but still replaceable.

In an absolutely perfect world we’d add a LT and C and move Beebe and Guyton to their natural positions and have a great OL. However, we have so many holes that doesn’t seem feasible.

Beebe can continue to grow into the C position and I don’t doubt we can replace Martin from within. Guyton/Steele/Richards still doesn’t make me feel great though. I feel like there’s a semi hostage situation going on where just because he was the 1st round pick there’s nothing to do but accept/hope Guyton is going to be a very good LT…and very good has to be where the bar is set, can’t settle for above average at LT.
