When a defense changes its looks late, it’s a mental chess match. In that game:
• The Defense Won the Pre-Snap Battle: Tampa Bay showed one look, shifted late, and brought extra rushers.
• The QB Failed to Adjust: Instead of recognizing the blitz and dumping it off quickly to his hot route, Dak forced throws into coverage, leading directly to the turnovers that lost the game.
Todd Bowles completely won the strategic chess match by sending complex, disguised blitz packages. A quarterback in his 11th season is supposed to be a master at reading the field, but instead, he looked completely rattled, lacked answers pre-snap, and panicked when the free rushers got home
.
Cool post. I like the special touches of blaming turnovers on a the quarterback after the ball hit the receivers in the hand. Probably could have thrown a little better, but all great coaches and receivers say if the ball hits you in your hands, its supposed to be caught.
Part of the receivers and tight ends job description is to catch the ball when it hits you in your hands. Every pass even from the elite quarterbacks in the league aren't always going to be perfect, but the receivers and TEs are paid to catch the ball when it hits them in their hands.
Another thing im not sure you're educated about. Yes the quarterback identifies blitzers, but the center also calls out blitzers and yells out the offensive linemen assignments and adjustments, pre-snap. Every time a blitzer comes free, that doesn't always mean thats the quarterbacks fault. That can be a blown call from the quarterback, the center or just a blown assignment from a TE or running back who missed their blocks.
I know you want to believe that everything that goes wrong is always the quarterbacks fault.... especially in Dallas, but thats not the case.
Ok, lets move on to the whole narrative that Dak is somehow bad against blitzes, and he looked rattled, panicked, etc. Some of that may have been true at times. He's a human being. There's not one quarterback in the NFL who's better or worse than him that haven't had a game or two where they played bad or missed some receivers or get rattled by blitzer that keep beating blocks or coming in free. Bad games happen.
How many picks did Stafford throw just recently? Multiple picks in one game or something like that? He's an elite quarterback. Throwing that many turnovers doesn't exhibit cool and calmness does it? Ok then.
To conclude, I'll just remind you that despite having a bad game vs the Bucs, because these things can happen, lets place your blitz narratives up against Dak's overall performances against the blitz.....
1. Dak is 3rd highest in the NFL amongst all quarterbacks vs the blitz with a 78.3% completion rate.
2. Dak has thrown behind the line of scrimmage (from the pocket) on 39.1% of his blitz attempts. Thats the highest rank in the NFL.
3. Dak ranks 6th highest amongst all quarterbacks vs the blitz during his entire career. Doesn't seem like a quarterback who plays rattled, scared or whatever other narrative that people want to push vs the blitz to me.
