I didn't realize what it cost Roy to go from the still popular #31 to the pedestrian and "who is that" #38 ----- He had to pay at least $210,000 dollars. Man, he really wanted to get rid of the number that made him famous, a number kids in high school and even little league were suddenly fighting to wear.
Maybe you guys knew how much it costs to swap numbers, but I had no idea until I read it in today's paper. Jerry Porter had planned to switch from 84 to 81 until he learned that the NFL requires players to reimburse Reebok, the league's official supplier, for the value of the jerseys already printed for sale to fans, jerseys that would be obsolete after a name or number change.
Roy paid some big money since I'm sure his Cowboys #31 was still of more value than Porter's #84, wouldn't you think? When Porter learned the number change would cost him $210,000, his response was, "Man, there's a couple of nice cars I'd like to get for that money.
The more popular the player, the more expensive the switch, according to the NFL. The Ocho Cinco jersey situation is still unresolved, and Chad had to wear his old jersey in the opener. On Wednesday, the Cincinnnati Bengals star didn't want to talk about it.
No kidding....can you imagine what his price tag for that change is? Roy Williams must have really grown to hate his #31 because I'm sure he paid huge bucks for that change.
