I do not see any difference between that play and the Dez play in 2014 *merged*

The James catch is under different rules than the Dez catch. Also, according to the language of the rule, the James catch was in fact, a catch.

I don't know that it's under different rules inasmuch as it is under clarified rules. The rules is pretty much the same except it goes into a little more detail.

I'm sorry, I was thinking you were talking about Ertz. I just logged in and didn't get my mind straight on the current conversation.
No worries brother. Glad you made the transition over!

It's actually different. It's more ambiguous too, so definitely not clarified.

Either way you want to call it. The NFL needs to do something different about this rule. In older days all of these were catches. Dez caught the ball, had control and two feet in. Same with the others. Had control, two feet in and had control when the ball broke the plain of end zone. The NFL wonders why viewership is down. Obviously there are several reasons. But rules like this that leave it up to refs interpretation makes people wonder if it’s fixed.

This is why Pereira proposed review protocol changes after the James catch. That looks like MORE of a catch than Dez' clearly, but going to the ground trumps everything James did on that play, which is why Dez and Megatron's catches were overturned. The rule might stink, but it's been applied consistently.

All they need to do is make coaches and players 100% informed and aware of how the rule works and then WRs will do a better job wrapping the ball up. Seriously though, leave out all the steps, football move, going to the ground stuff and simply focus on maintaining possession.

I'm not sure one thing from this post is true.

Yes, no comparison. Are you serious?

Both caught the ball at the 5, both took three steps, both demonstrated control, both had the ball pop up from the ground in the endzone. Are you really not seeing the comparison?

Dead serious. Along with many others there are a ton of differences. First of all Ertz is running a slant where he catches the ball and starts to run. In fact it’s a continuation of him running...no jumping, falling, etc. He then dives and crosses the plane. So catch, run with control, Break plane with control until ball comes loose...in fact he catches it at the 6 and gets 3-4 steps in. Breaking plane ends it all.

Dez was completely different. First off he went up for the ball and grabbed it. His three steps were in the process of falling to the ground, where he tried to reach and the ball popped up. It was one continuous catch and going to the ground despite the three steps.

THATS THE KEY..both Dez..and Jesse James for that matter where in the process of going to the ground when catching it. Ertz was upright running. Also Dez never crossed the plane to even make that part of the equation.

NOW with that said and repeating what I said above..Dez caught the ball. The issue is the rule, not the two plays. To try and take away Ertz TD because of Dez would just make it’s application dumber. JMO. If this dumb rule would have been the norm decades ago the Butch Johnson catch and many other famous plays would have never have been allowed

Take the rule away. Lol. NFL wants more explosive passing games. Go back old school, there are a lot of passes back in the day that would be over turned. Now it has just became confusing to many fans.

Right. That was Pereira and Blandino's admonition in discussing the James catch. They talked about how they would go out to teams' coaches and players to explain the rules and emphasize to just secure the ball and not try to do too much. You secure the ball and you'll be fine. But players get caught up in the heat of the moment, which is why I don't blame Dez, nor do I blame the official who clearly didn't see that the ball hit the ground. I'd have called it a catch too from his angle because it looked like the ball stayed above ground from there. That's why everyone who still says the ball never touched the ground always shows that angle but not the reverse angle.

Then you're going to have to explain why Blandino said he "absolutely" looked for a football move that you say didn't matter.

(The reach happened well after Dez started to fall.)

Dez was stumbling toward the ground from the time his first foot came down. In fact, what many of you are calling his first step is actually just his first foot landing on the ground after the jump, and what is referred to as his second step was just the second foot coming down, and all the while he was stumbling while falling to the ground.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I had let you know. I saw the G2 added to your name so that's how I knew about you.
Yeah, I came over awhile ago but never posted.

Yeah, the Dez play looked like one of the greatest catches I've seen, well that really wasn't. It was heartbreaking. And you know Dez, he'll claw, bite and scratch for every inch.

yes he was. He made a move common to the game ADVANCING THE BALL. How blind can you people be?

He was advancing the ball only because that's the direction his momentum took him. He had no ability to establish his footing and change directions, which indicates he was not in control enough to keep from going to the ground.

When I came over I found I had actually signed up to the sight a few years ago, but I never hung out here. That's why I couldn't use my other name - the sight has me stuck to the original name I signed up under.

Yes he will, and that's why I never blamed him. His attitude is part of what made him successful.

What it looks like when Dez is making a football move for additional yardage off his left foot in another context. It's on the football todo list to join with the 2014 play, but football is now like a septenary focus.

The ball survived the ground on that play. Had it come loose it would’ve been an incomplete pass
because he was going to the ground. Steps don’t matter when a receiver is going to the ground. Besides the league doesn’t consider that a football move.
