If this team underperforms and has a bad season..I
I look for McCarthy to be fired. Now hopefully he rights the ship and gets this team back on track or he's going to get his walking papers. Quinn will replace him I'm sure if this happens.

Quite.
Someone's head will roll to justify extending Prescott. It's beyond embarrassing at this point.

I
Define 'bad season'. This forum alone has seen hundreds of threads and posts over the past two decades of this or that coach getting fired after a 'bad season'. Then the same members saw the same coach coaching the very next season.
I’m not OP but a bad season for me would be under .500, I still think Jerry is planning mccarthy’s exit after this season regardless of a winning record or not. No Super Bowl means no job in my eyes.

The bar for defining a bad season keeps dropping around here....what used to be Super Bowl Trophies, has now become simply a NFCCG appearance. Sad and pathetic. Corky should have been canned following the first SF playoff loss.

I think it’s a stretch to assume the Ariz game is a harbinger of a poor season.

MM has led this team to back to back 12-5 seasons. Yes, they failed to deliver in the playoffs, but you can tell they are at least “in the hunt”.

We had some bad losses last year as well… the TB loss was brutal. But then they went on a run. Then Philly in week 6 where we looked outclassed. Then bad losses in GB and Jax and who can forget the stinker they laid in Wash to close out the year?

My point is that they will likely recover. In fact they don’t often lose back to back games. A W on Sunday goes a long way to removing the stink from Arizona.

Remember, although injuries are not an excuse, they certainly influence games. Removing three pro bowlers along the OL will affect the offense. A lot. On D, Wilson and Lewis are both just getting back into the swing of things, and are rusty. Both guys contributed to some negative plays.

In the end, how they respond to adversity will tell the story of their season. We get our first report card on that front on Sunday.

He ousted Kellen Moore to install his Texas Coast offense. Which has been abysmal so far in the redzone.
In total truthfullness I'm not so sure McCarthy's head will roll if his offense underachieves but what
I do think will happen they will start realllllyyyy questioning Dak. My opinion they may start to sour
on Dak Prescott running our offense.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Jerry Jones does all the hiring and fired, except for himself of course. During his reign, he has:

  • fired Barry Switzer after 6-10
  • fired Dave Campo after 5-11
  • technically fired Wade Phillips after 1-7
Contrastly, Jones has retained:

  • Dave Campo after two consecutive 5-11 seasons
  • Bill Parcells after a 6-10 season his second season
  • Jason Garrett after a 4-12 season
  • Mike McCarthy after a 6-10 season

Although entirely possible, the odds do not favor Jones firing McCarthy after coaching a sub .500 campaign this season.

Miss the playoffs
Gracias.

When Jones was sane, he did not pink slip Jimmy Johnson after 1-15 and 7-9.

After his schism, Jones:
  • kicked Barry Switzer to the curb the following season, Switzer's first non-playoff year, after losing in the wild card round the year before
  • peeled Dave Campo off him after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance
  • kept Parcells after two consecutive non postseason years
  • stuck with Wade Phillips after a 9-7 no playoff season and technically 86'd Phillips mid season two years later
  • stood by his man Jason Garrett after three straight 8-8 .500 seasons. And a 4-12 season. And a 9-7 season. All ending with no postseason play.
  • allowed Mike McCarthy to continue sitting beside his center chair at press conferences after a no playoff 6-10 season.
Odds? Jones will not fire McCarthy if the team does not make the playoffs this year.

Jerry is not going to pay McCarthy for nothing. He didn't fire Garrett either, just let him play out his contract. Mike got another year on his contract and he'll be out after that.

They are about paying Micah and if they have a bad season, Dak is done here as far as an extension is concerned.

I guess the question is who do you replace him with in this scenario?

Quinn seems like the obvious answer at first, but what made Atlanta tick, the offense(Shanahan) or the defense?
If it is Quinn, who can he get to be the OC that isn't some recycled playcaller with outdated schemes?

I know some teams and fans get sucked trying to find the next McVay, Shanahan and possibly McDaniel but there's also quite a few young "Genius OC" that flamed out quickly.
Seems with the emphasis for scoring points than a traditional shutdown defense, it'll be nice to find an offensive minded head coach over a defensive one, depending on personnel.

Jerry also lately seems very patient with coaches. It has to be historically bad to get fired or "promoted" like Kiffin. It's usually keep them till the contract expires.

Year after year, members keep shaking their heads with derision over fellow members posting about playoffs instead of not getting to Super Bowl. Why all (100%) of that head shaking not getting directed at the one guy in the entire world, who does have an enormous real world effect on the team not getting to Super Bowls, has developed into a solid, three-decade old internet forum mystery.

Not a single team wins or even makes it to Superbowls every single year. None of them. It is not sad or pathetic, it is pro sports in a salary capped league.

Do you think this is European soccer where the team owned by the richest oligarch wins every single season?

It is fair to be disheartened by not getting to an NFCCG in the last 30 years, but to be upset at not having your team be Superbowl or bust every year for the last 30 years is detached from reality.
