Yeah, I remember how it went down. It's fine to fire Gailey in that situation. The ridiculous part is replacing him with Dave Campo.
I don’t know what the sentiment was when Campo replaced Gailey. I wasn’t posting on fan boards until 2002, but I bet a lot of fans were okay with it at the time, because Campo was part of our 3 championship teams and the Jimmy Johnson coaching tree. I remember not being thrilled about it, but I was okay with it at the time. I was more upset about the Chan Gailey hiring, because everyone thought it was going to be UCLA’s Terry Donahue. He coached Aikman. He was at Jerry’s house, and everyone thought it was a done deal, but he backed out at the last minute due to not having enough say in personnel. That’s was what I heard anyway.

He ousted Kellen Moore to install his Texas Coast offense. Which has been abysmal so far in the redzone.
Kellen Moore could score points. To be fair,.it.was.one game with three pro bowl starters out at most important offensively positions.

I never thought Kellen was the problem. And it's yet to be seen if Mike is the solution. Even though I wasn't happy with him last game, I give him a pass. We need to focus on 3-1 vs 2-2.

If this team underperforms and has a bad season..I
I look for McCarthy to be fired. Now hopefully he rights the ship and gets this team back on track or he's going to get his walking papers. Quinn will replace him I'm sure if this happens.
If McCarthy wins the Super Bowl this season. I'm sure that he will go to the Hall of Fame.

I think it’s a stretch to assume the Ariz game is a harbinger of a poor season.

MM has led this team to back to back 12-5 seasons. Yes, they failed to deliver in the playoffs, but you can tell they are at least “in the hunt”.

We had some bad losses last year as well… the TB loss was brutal. But then they went on a run. Then Philly in week 6 where we looked outclassed. Then bad losses in GB and Jax and who can forget the stinker they laid in Wash to close out the year?

My point is that they will likely recover. In fact they don’t often lose back to back games. A W on Sunday goes a long way to removing the stink from Arizona.

Remember, although injuries are not an excuse, they certainly influence games. Removing three pro bowlers along the OL will affect the offense. A lot. On D, Wilson and Lewis are both just getting back into the swing of things, and are rusty. Both guys contributed to some negative plays.

In the end, how they respond to adversity will tell the story of their season. We get our first report card on that front on Sunday.
Now there ya go, voicing reason. Off with your head!

The Jerry Jones Era

  • Dave Campo is the only head coach whose team never made the postseason
  • Chan Gailey was fired after his team's second consecutive wildcard appearance and defeat
  • Bill Parcells resigned after his team's second wildcard appearance and defeat
Everyone else:
  • Jimmy Johnson's team lost in the divisional round, reloaded and won back-to-back Super Bowls. His eventual exit was not due to an early playoff exit
  • Barry Switzer's team bowed out of NFC Championship and Divisional games but he returned the next season each time
  • Wade Phillips' team short-circuited in two Divisional round games but he returned after each playoff loss
  • Jason Garrett's team imploded in three Divisional round games but he came back to FIGHT after each postseason ending
  • Mike McCarthy's team has visited the wildcard and Divisional rounds then went fishing but he came back for more
Perhaps it depends how the breeze is blowing through Jones' ears after a pre-Super Bowl round loss..? Maybe he will have a Chan Gailey flashback and say enough is enough..? Or he will say to himself he does not love McCarthy as much as he did Garrett..? I do not know. On average, he has shown to have a slow trigger finger after early playoff exits.
Quite honestly, I think it depends more on Dan Quinn than anything. If we have an early exit AND DQ decides he wants to be a HC again, I think Jerry hits the eject button on MM to install DQ.

I hope we can bring Garrett back home. I miss his pre and after-game interviews. Who said AIs were bad? This one hasn't been programmed completely by Jerry yet.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Jerry Jones does all the hiring and fired, except for himself of course. During his reign, he has:

  • fired Barry Switzer after 6-10
  • fired Dave Campo after 5-11
  • technically fired Wade Phillips after 1-7
Contrastly, Jones has retained:

  • Dave Campo after two consecutive 5-11 seasons
  • Bill Parcells after a 6-10 season his second season
  • Jason Garrett after a 4-12 season
  • Mike McCarthy after a 6-10 season

Although entirely possible, the odds do not favor Jones firing McCarthy after coaching a sub .500 campaign this season.

Not only that, but I think it also would depend on how the team looks with Mike. Since Mike decided that he wants the offense (and I happen to agree with him on this) to be the Texas Coast Offense and didn't want Moore's play calling anymore, I think Mike will need to have a solid offense to justify keeping him. I think his system is a good one, and it can take a few weeks for a new system to take place. I think it's important that, as fans, we be patient.

The 'right coach for Jerry Jones' discussion has made the rounds of CowboysZone about as long and often as the OP's topic. In my opinion, who Jones hires carries the underlying stipulation of the candidate capitulating to Jones' incessant need to micromanage coaches' responsibilities.

Dan Quinn will be high on his hiring list if he has demonstrated that willingness to bend that far for him. It is a key component for Jones feeling he has reached the right working chemistry with a candidate.

This sub-topic takes me back to Jones first 'real' (lol) head coach interview process after Barry Switzer resigned. George Seifert's name was batted around but Seifert never heard from Jones. Then there was Terry Donahue. Jones could not get the salary right (he was especially stingy back in the day) and that so-called negotiation fell apart. Sherman Lewis was a hot prospect at the time and Jones actually interviewed him several times but nothing serious came out of it.

In the end, after an arduous search :laugh:Jones settled on Chan Gailey and the rest was history. Well, for two years at least.:muttley:

Quinn's coaching strength is the ability to build strong relationships between players. His Atlanta locker room is tight. He gained a very strong bond with his players because of it. Exactly how that would factor in with Jones decision is another unanswered question. Jones loves his fatherly bond with players too. It will be a plus if the two mesh in this aspect also.

Of course, Quinn has several years of critiquing how Jones interacts with his head coach and staff. Whether he is willing to stay or is willing to go elsewhere with this in mind is another factor. He will be a hot hiring candidate, that is for sure. Wonder if Pete Carroll is thinking of retiring soon, lol?

And if we beat SF, the CZ will be back to SB chatter.

Jerry would meet his salary demands but could not afford the chewing gum cost. :)

Think Denver, Minny, Jax, and even NE are thinking the same things? Smh

I think the Cards game was a shock to Jerry.

Big Mike got schooled by the Cards DC, who is basically a rookie DC.

Dude played soft zones against us all day.

Embarrassing for big Mike. Who wears the ring.
