I saw some film of the Dolphins mini-camp and there was Parcells in his big 4x XL long-sleeve white tee shirt walking amongst the rookies while they were doing thier warm-ups...he might as well be coaching the team.
I also watched America's Game on the NFL network with Parcells,LT and Phil Simms talking about the Giants first Super Bowl season.
Parcells has always resorted to motivational gimmicks to get his players to play better. It doesn't work with every player...especially players who are self motivated.
The whole earning the star and the fetching of water to the head coach was played up by the media and Parcells hyped it up with his condesending comments about the rookies every year.
He is a good head coach but he was way too controlling on the offense in my opinion. I never saw Parcells in the same way as a Jimmy Johnson who would go into games with the mantra "When you go up against a big gorilla...you punch em right in the mouth". When Parcells teams were big underdogs he would try and slow down the game with ball control and try and keep it close to where they could maybe win it at the end with a last second play or field goal. It's frustrating to play that way and it's frustrating for fans to watch that kind of game plan time after time after time.
Oh yeah, he was conservative on defense too.

Go watch "NFL Access" on NFLN this week. They have a segment on the Cowboys equipment manager in which he talks about "the guys all want to put on the helmet first". About how their eyes light up when they see the star and it is the first peice of equiment they want to try on. Anything that makes these kids more enthusiastic about their job and motivates them to give their all is ok by me.
BTW, have I said I'm glad BP is gone and that I don't give him but about 30% of the credit for this team that most guys on this site give him...

The "earn your star" idea is silly in 2008.
Nowadays, a 1st round pick has more job security over his first couple years in the league than the head coach (on the strong majority of teams). So it would take a pretty dense 1st round pick to feel any sort of threat by this mind-game.
It would be a more appropriate policy for just the mid-late round picks and rookie FAs.
Anyways, this is why players love Wade Phillips, and I've heard this come out of Terrell Owens' mouth countless times now. "He treats us like men." No implementing HS football psychology on grown men with wives, kids, and 7 figure incomes.

While it wasn't an original idea, I thought that it would a good tradition added to the Cowboys legacy. The goal of every new drafted player or UDFA could have been to distinguish themselves beyond the customary theme of, "I've got a job and making bank, so what"? Instilling a little pride through tradition couldn't hurt in this age of the NFL. Of course, the Waterboy routine, although funny, was taking the reinforced humility a bit too far.
