I Hate The Draft

That's the past. Gotta look forward.

WR - Our starting WR is in his 30s. Our #2 may retire and our #3 runs his mouth and quits on his patterns when it counts most.
Any WR drafted is going to warm the bench for a couple of years. I'm glad Jerry didn't reach for a receiver. We'll get better value at WR in the 3rd or 4th round.

RB - With his running style our starter may not last too long and in the era of the salary cap, you can't pay all 13 of your pro-bowlers. gotta let some go. Mendenhall would have been a cheap replacement for Barber and we could have gotten a complimentary back in the later rounds of this or next draft.
Obviously, Jerry believes he can get a reasonable deal done with Barber. Barber probably has four good years left. The idea is to get better now and make a run at the superbowl. Felix gives you more in the short term than Rashard.

TE - just traded our backup for a 4th and picked a backup for a 2nd while we have a pro-bowler.
I like this pick, because of the two TE scenarios. Fasano just never became the receiving threat that Parcells thought he would. Any CB or WR taken with the 61st pick would have been a reach. Dallas selected a TE who is a very good blocker and receiver who should see plenty of action.

CB - I liked the Jenkins pick. Can't have enough CBs these days. And it was a change from trading out of the first. Hope his attitude is not a bad as they say it is. - This is a drafting for a starter and creating competition pick. i.e. Jimmy pick. And in this era, a money saver.
I was excited when they announced this pick. Working with Newman should help with any attitude problems.

Something to consider: I'm not in love with the Felix pick, but Jerry's bad drafts have often stemmed from drafting "WHO!?!" or "WTH?!?" players. He'll nab a sixth-round prospect, a la Tony Dixon, in the second-round. That's a "Jerry pick."

This draft doesn't smell like that at all. Everyone nationally thought Felix Jones would go here, and everyone nationally seems to think it's a great fit and a good value (see Goose's chart). Our next two picks also screamed value.

That's a far cry from those '95-'01 drafts. A far cry.

Jimmy had a few misses as well:

1. Steve Walsh

2. Alexander Wright

3. Curvin Richards

Reaching for Russell Maryland, who was a solid player, but not worthy of the #1 overall pick.

Parcells was even worse with some of his picks. Bottom line is that the Cowboys draft record since the early 90's is spotty at best, but if you surf the web you won't find a negative grade on the Cowboys 3 picks in today's draft.

If I recall correctly, the Steve Walsh picked netted 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks from the Saints.

And look at the first round in the '91 draft. The Maryland pick was a great pick in one of the weakest top 10 classes in recent draft history. As a matter of fact, it turned out that only 5 players were worthy of where they were chosen in the first round and Jimmy hit on 2 of them. Maryland and Alvin Harper. Which leads to this question. Although Herman Moore was chosen at #10 and Harper at #12, if you had the choice, would you choose Moore or Harper. Similar to Jones vs. Mendenhall. Complimentary #2 vs. a solid #1.

seriously - you guys like what we have done since the '94 draft?

Trying to be unbiased here's how we've done.

2006 - Bobby Carpenter and Fasano in the first two rounds.
2005 - can't complain here. our best draft post-Jimmy.
2004 - J.Jones over S.Jackson. Did you see the Ram's OL last year?
2003 - Good draft thanks to the Jets (Big Bill wanted D. Robertson over TNew). But Al Johnson in the 2nd was a bust.
2002 - Roy Williams and Gurode in the first two rounds. not bad.
2001 - Infamous Quincy Carter (#53) and Tony Dixon draft. Not to mention trading the eventual #9 pick to Seattle for Galloway. We passed on Kendrell Bell (#39), Ken Lucas (#40), Robert Ferguson (#41), Kris Jenkins (#44), Freb Smoot (#45), Matt Light (#48), LaMont Jordan (#49) and Chris Chambers (#52) for our franchise QB.
2000 - Dwayne Goodrich draft. Not to mention trading our pick for Galloway. Didn't Seattle choose Alexander with this pick.
1999 - Ebenezer Ekuban and Solomon Page in the first two rounds.
1998 - Infamous Randy Moss draft.
1997 - The David LaFleur draft.
1996 - Passing on Tony Brackens and getting Kavika Pittman draft. Drafting Brackens would have prevented us from drafting Ellis in '98 and Ekuban in '99.
1995 - The triumvarite of Sherman Williams, Kendell Watkins and Shane Hannah in the 2nd round. - Could have stayed put and drafted Derrick Brooks. But no, we had enough LBs and needed backups (RB & TE) to compliment our starters.
1994 - Our downfall starter with Shante Carver in the 1st. Had Jerry pulled the trigger on a trade for Willie McGinest, we would not have had the run on DEs with our first picks and I bet the landscape of the NFL might have turned out to be a little different.

Wow, we sucked pre-Parcells. As much as I hate Big Bill, after going through this research, I should thank him despite the Jacobs, Peterman, Johnson, Carpenter and Fasano busts.

and Mendenhall is faster than FeJo.

I wouldn't say over. We traded out of the 1st that year didn't we? And we landed Spears and WARE! If we don't trade that, it could have been a real possibilty that we take Spears over Ware that year.

Ware> Jackson

Ware over Jackson only if BP pulled a Jerry Jones and didnt listen to advice! But then again some cowboy fans will use anything to justify a bad pick!!!

here another one u can justify... Drafting Peterman while passing on Matt Schaub!

I keep hearing that Felix is a big play guy and Mendenhall is too much like Barber? Mendenhall is a burner and FASTER than Felix Jones. Can someone explain to me how Mendenhall and Jones are too much alike/

after what happened this morning, any more of you on the bandwagon?
What happened this morning? I have watched and listened all day and don't think I've missed anything.

Why? We draft a WR it will be a wasted pick. That player stands zero chance of making our roster.

Ever since Jimmy left and Jerry took control - how many of you agree that you get so excited leading up to the draft and during the draft when a player like Stephen Jackson or Rashard Mendenhall falls right into our laps but the 'boys pull a trade or draft a backup and a meltdown occurs. This happens every single year. We are bigger idiots than Jerry.

Agreed on all counts.

I don't know why I get so worked up for the draft when I know Jerry is only going to rip my heart out.
