I hate when pancake blocks are called holding

I wasn't aware a 'pancake' block was automatically a hold. Where is that in the rules?

If you are blocking on the outside and you lock your arms then grab onto the defensive player then you are breaking the rules; that's a hold. And that's what the WR did based on my seeing the replay of it.

They have emphasized that rule this year including blocking say on a pick play. As the WR you cannot run at the defender then use your body to impede his ability to make a play. It's too difficult a bind for the defender who suddenly sees you as a blocker and not a receiver. I've seen this called on picks as well as isolated blockers on sweeps.

If you grab at their shoulders and take them straight down that isn't a hold....if they try to pull away and you stay engaged or wrap an arm around their neck sure........but if you put them straight down.......no way

Four different refs threw a flag on that play. They must be getting the same instructions....

The officiating in the NFL over the past few years has been horrible, and I think whats worse is that they don't give an explanation for the reason that they made the call. I know for example, the ref who was the closet to the play in the last game made the call and a ref from all the way across the field talked him out of the call. I never understood how can someone tell you that you didn't see what you thought you saw.

No. If you're outside the tackles and you extend your arms and hold more than briefly.....that is a hold. You cannot grab your opponent and hang on esp if you're controlling them with extended arms.

Going to the ground or a pancake block has nothing to do with the hold. You can knock your opponent down as long as you don't grab them and hold on.....hence the word holding.

When a blocker pancakes a defender it is a holding penalty in the modern NFL. Back in the Nineties and before those were considered great blocks and usually made the highlight reels.

The Cowboys have been called for it multiple times this year. I think Tyron might have been called for it more than once.

In the Skins game the WR Mayle pancaked a DB and they called it holding and it nullified Zeke's TD. It turned out OK because the Cowboys still scored a TD and burned more clock but I hated the call.

It seems that if a blocker knocks a defender to the ground it is automatically going to be considered holding by the refs. I just don't get it.

They say the ratings are down. This is just another example of things that they NFL has done to take the fun out of the game. Turn a highlight reel play into a penalty and nullify a TD.

Yes mayle's holding was a pancake, when it happened I was like ok he's getting the hang of it, then I saw the replay and me and my dad look at eachother like "wt*" that was a pancake.

BTW, on another play....by Washington on a flag picked up....you cannot lift and slam a player to the ground, esp one with the ball. That is unnecessary roughness and is a 15 yd penalty and automatic first down. That was an egregious pick up of a properly thrown flag.

100% completely blown call. One of many the refs missed against the Cowboys.

I think it was Leonard Davis called for it during the '07 Playoff game vs. Giants that killed a very important drive. I totally agree...stupid rule. That game still haunts me to this day, probably because I was there.

Yes, that's the time frame when I first started to notice it.

I remember MartyB getting called for it multiple times and his first year was 2008.
