I hate when pancake blocks are called holding

When a blocker pancakes a defender it is a holding penalty in the modern NFL. Back in the Nineties and before those were considered great blocks and usually made the highlight reels.

The Cowboys have been called for it multiple times this year. I think Tyron might have been called for it more than once.

In the Skins game the WR Mayle pancaked a DB and they called it holding and it nullified Zeke's TD. It turned out OK because the Cowboys still scored a TD and burned more clock but I hated the call.

It seems that if a blocker knocks a defender to the ground it is automatically going to be considered holding by the refs. I just don't get it.

They say the ratings are down. This is just another example of things that they NFL has done to take the fun out of the game. Turn a highlight reel play into a penalty and nullify a TD.

That's like the third time it's happened in the last few weeks as well where it's been a pancake block getting called for holding. Bugs me to no end but what can you do? It's going to happen from time to time.

I posted yesterday after that play that "I have no idea what holding is anymore." For me I used to watch about 12-13 games a week from the condensed package. I am losing interest because the flags are getting too subjective and hap hazard.

Anytime a defensive player falls - Holding, Punts - holding, Incomplete pass on a 3 step drop to the WR on the right - holding on the WR to the left. Then they will miss blatant facemask calls right in front of them

Yes, holding and pass interference should only be called when it is obvious. If it is questionable, then don't call it.

I actually thought the ref crew in the Skins game was better than most in regards to pass interference but they were bad in other areas.

Yea, the miss on Beasley was particularly egregious - since there was a PI and a facemask within 5 yards of each other and the ball was right there.

The definition of holding versus what gets called on the field is such vague BS these days. Officials can totally dictate the outcome of drives/games based on how they apply holding to one team and not the other. It's infuriating hearing the announcers say "yup, that's a hold, totally justifiable call" when the true travesty happens when the same officials DON'T make that same call on the other team, because 'holding' happens on almost every single play.

There were very few penalties called but they seemed to be on big plays. The let the db/ wr go at it all day though
Smith has been called lately for something he has done for years. He just snatches them to the ground by the front of their jersey. While technically I guess that's holding it's rarely called on tackles unless the guy is beating them around the edge and you hold the jersey or you hook the guy. Many tackles hold the jersey of the pass rusher and as long as he stays in front of defender it's not called

That has been the biggest officiating problem this year. DBs are constantly pinning WRs arms down and not getting called for it. It is happening in every single game every week.

Holding can be a bit nebulous. Most of the time they are not going to call it if the offensive player is inside the shoulder pads (rather than outside), but if officials believe the offensive player had to use his grip to restrain the defensive player from getting away from him laterally, they seem to flag it.

That seemed to be the case with Mayle's block. His grip was inside the shoulder pads but he used it to restrain the defender when he tried to more laterally to make a play on Elliott. It wasn't like Mayle got into the defender and drove him straight into the ground for a pancake block.

I don't have a problem with the call as long as it's consistent, which it is not. If you can't be consistent with it, then stop making it a judgment call.

Absolutely, especially holding.

I've watched the NFL's video on what constitutes holding.

My biggest takeaway? If it's holding, you'll know it's holding.

Twice in the forth quarter, their center did the same thing.
Had a hold on our D linemen and then threw him to the ground.

I have no problem with that, just call it the same for both teams.
