Why do fans use

" I have been a Cowboy fan for <enter huge number of years here> "

or i've been a fan since < enter Ice age Age here>

or i've given my entire life to cowboys

or my entire house is blue and siliver

or my wife is a cowboy blow up doll

to justify their opinions

Do you guys actaully think, these things make your opinions more validated then someone who isnt these things? Does it mean that your a better fan.

I mean im just curious cause i keep seeing this threads starting off saying one of those lines, as if that means there thread is validated.

because that is a key sign that they feel unsecure that someone else would beleive them, that they are a boyz fan. when really if you join a cowboys site we would expect you to be a cowboys fan unless noted otherwise

This is a true statement.

I'd add that this whole thread is also a sign of insecurity. Why would you post this at all? If an opinion is valid or a poster is supporting an opinion with strong content, then that poster and the associated posts stand on there own merrits for the board to consider or not.

Nothing more need be said IMO.

It's just chest pounding to show authority yet it does no such thing.

Are you more likely to do business with a company that's been in business since 1966? or a company that's been in business since 2002?

IT usually doesn't matter much at all except when speaking in a historical context.

For eample:

I've been a Cowboys fan since 1980 and Troy Aikman was the best QB I've ever seen for the Cowboys.

Yet:

I've been a Cowboys fan since 1968 and Roger Staubach is the best QB I've ever seen for the Cowboys.

There is some subjectivity to that example but it can sometimes put the posters thought into the historical perspective.

Of course when speaking of current events it doesn't much matter at all.

But since I've been a Cowboys fan since 1968 my opinion counts more than yours anyway so......

depends on if the company from 66 is stuck in their old methodical ways or if the 02 company is coming up with a new way to get stuff done faster and with alot better results

Ask the companies that have made millions advertising with Google Search instead of Yahoo and MSN Search. ;)

That doesn't really apply well here.

Just cuz someone has been watching a team for 40 years doesn't mean they know what they are watching more than the person that's been watching for 5 or 10 years.

If that were true.. BP wouldn't have been schooled by the much younger Sean Payton.

It's probably the same syndrome that forces people to reference post count in determining relevancy. Which is lame.

You'll understand someday when you're old. Then, you can shout at the kids skateboarding on the sidewalk, get cranky because those damn kids think they know it all, complain about arthritis and wax poetic about Dat Nguyen - after all, you've been a Cowboys fan for 43 years - how dare those kids skateboard on YOUR sidewalk?

My original post was mainly a joke about understanding if you have been a fan for a long time, but it rings a note of truth.

What you have to understand is that many of us have listened to ignorant 2nd year fans for 40 years and it's always the same thing. Always calling for the backup QB after a few bad games, thinking we should trade our starting RB because our 2nd stringer puts up nice yards coming off the bench, analyzing a play and not knowing what coverage responsibilities or a passing tree are, etc. etc.

Basically what we have now is all these Madden guys coming in trying to tell everyone they know what is right, even though history has shown differently. We have raised an generation of people who conveniently have 'sources' and also a veil of anonymity.

The point is, before you go spouting off nonsense and then getting mad when someone corrects you, think about how many skins you have against the wall.

Why are people ragging on people who have been fans of this franchise before some of you were even born? I think some fans bring it up as a badge of honor having been die hard fans through good times and bad but always loyal to the Cowboys. It does not make us better fans or smarter fans but we do have a sense of history with this ball club by seeing it 1st hand not reading it in some book or hearing stories from your daddy. I admit I'm proud to say I have been a fan of this club since 1965 but I don't think it makes me a better fan.

It's just a point of reference really...

I see threads here asking the "old guys" questions all of the time. Since we do have a rich team past, many like to hear what it was like to be a fan in the early years from a personal standpoint.

I've had several younger members here email me and ask me particular questions regarding early Cowboys at times.

I don't think being a fan for a greater length of time makes anyone a "better fan", but it does lend more personal appreciation to those that have been around through thick and thin when we have a good season.

Oh... fan since 1966... :D

You realize that you're basically exemplifying what this thread pertains to. The guy that claims to be a fan for 40 something years and looks down on the newer fans that don't see things your way.

I understand where you're coming from on some people that just pop off with completely idiotic posts on the message boards... but I give respect to those people that actually prove that they have knowledge about the team and the game of football... despite their age, post count, and years of being a fan.

I'm 28 and have been a Cowboy fan for as long as I can remember... but I only really became a diehard, never miss a game Cowboy fan in the past 5 years. This isn't directed at anyone in particular: Just because you may be much older than me and have followed the Cowboys longer doesn't make you anymore knowledgable about the current state of the Cowboys team than me.

The only thing I'm addressing is the long time fan that is sure to post his years of being a fan in a lot of his posts and uses it as a "DON'T QUESTION ME KID!" kind of tone.

I'd be very proud of being a fan for many years as well... but it doesn't give me the right to talk down to someone else that's much younger than me.
